German What will I learn in this subject? You will learn the language, cultures and ways of life of people in German-speaking countries. German is easy for English speakers as English is a Germanic language. Over 100 million people in Europe speak German as their first language and it is the official language of five countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland. Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. Taking part in our annual German exchange to Rheinland-Pfalz! Getting involved in the German debating club and/or the German essay competition. Working in class independently, in groups and in pairs.
Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? Any knowledge of German (or any Germanic language such as English, Danish, Dutch, Swedish etc.) will stand to you in 1st Year.
How will this subject be useful to me? Learning a Modern Foreign Language such as German will be useful in your personal life for travelling and in many careers such as tourism, business and education. There are approximately 300 German companies in Ireland who employ more than 20,000 people. Assessment? During their three years in Junior Cycle students are assessed through a variety of methods in order to monitor their progress such as through in-house semester assessment, projects, quizzes and oral presentations to name but a few. For their Junior Cycle students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments, an Assessment Task and a written exam at the end of 3rd Year. 21
