Junior Cycle SUBJECT:
Engineering What will I learn in this subject? In this subject you will learn about design and manufacturing with materials (mainly plastics and metals, aluminium and brass etc.). You will also learn about the importance of technology in our society as well as implementing a range of manual as well as computer aided manufacturing processes to create projects that show gears/ linkages/ motors working together. How will I learn in this subject? You will learn through both the practical element and the theory element. Both complement each other, in that, the work you do in the practical aspect of the class will directly relate to the theory side. It is a hands-on subject, and you will learn by working on your own initiative. You will be given various projects to complete and there will also be a theory aspect that deals with materials, tools, machinery and design. Is learning this subject in CPS anything like what I did in Primary School? Like all technology subjects many students would not have much experience using hand tools or machinery when they first come in, however Mathematics is a big part of this subject and some primary schools may have experience using Microbits. Students will also build on their knowledge from primary school on the importance of different forms of Technology in society and also the importance of sustainable living using technology. How will this subject be useful to me? This subject is an excellent subject if you like working on your own initiative creating, designing and building your own projects. It allows students to take control of their own learning and is a subject that is very much learning through doing. Students are entrusted with using machinery and hand tools to manipulate materials into the required shape. Assessment? Students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments. Their project, worth 70% will be specified and marked by the State Examinations Commission. The terminal written examination worth 30% is taken by students at the end of 3rd Year.
