Construction Studies What is this subject all about at Senior Cycle? This subject explores all the facets of planning, building or renovating a house. The course informs about building regulations, standards and cross section plan drawings for essential areas of the dwelling. We explore extensions, renovations and upgrading to higher standards with an emphasis on Sustainable design and Environmentally conscious material choice. There are practical elements to this subject where experience from Wood Technology is a huge advantage. Wood jointing skills are explored further along with design and manufacture of a Final Project in 6th Year. Do I have to have studied this subject at Junior Cycle in order to do it at Senior Cycle? Although it is a huge advantage to have studied Wood Technology at Junior Cycle before choosing Construction Studies, it is not necessary. It is, however, highly recommended that you have studied either Technology, Wood Technology or Graphics before choosing this subject. Will learning this subject at Senior Cycle be different to what I studied at Junior Cycle? There is a much higher emphasis on drawing skills and theory as the exam is weighted at 50%, but there is also a practical Day Exam worth 25% and a Project/Portfolio element worth 25%.
