As Head of North Shropshire College, I am very proud that the College is going from strength to strength, with the performance of our students getting better every year. The merger of colleges to form Herefordshire, Ludlow and North Shropshire College has brought about many advantages, for example; we are the only college in the area to offer a timetable suited to the demands of young people living in our rural community, who often face long daily journeys. Through the merger there has been increased investments in facilities, including a new refectory at Walford, and assorted renovations across both campuses. Our timetables book study periods to guarantee free half days and, in most cases, a free day every week; so students can study at home, pursue their sporting or other extra-curricular activities, or possibly take a part-time job. OSWESTRY CAMPUS Our Oswestry Campus offers some of the best educational facilities in Shropshire – an exciting, modern campus on a shared site with the superb, purpose-built Oswestry Leisure Centre. We are well equipped to provide for students of all abilities, with lifts to all levels, designated disabled parking bays and fully-equipped toilets. The Oswestry Campus has top of the range facilities, including Scholars Restaurant, which is a professional teaching commercial restaurant and also Visage, the College’s dedicated Hair & Beauty Salon. The Learning Resource Centre has recently been updated with state-of-the-art ICT facilities and has a friendly student focus. There is an on-site shop which is open all day in term time, and also a refectory which is open early every day for breakfast.

WALFORD CAMPUS The Harris Centre welcomes visitors to the Walford Campus, and is home to our Animal Care Centre with specialist facilities to cater for our 100 different species of animals, including; meerkats, snakes, alpacas, rats, kookaburras and bearded dragons. It is also home to our modern and friendly Learning Resource Centre. We are proud to have a milking herd of 300 cows and a sheep flock of 65 breeding ewes. Adjacent to our Walford Farm is our Equestrian Centre which comprises a 60m x 30m indoor arena, outdoor school and stabling for 32 horses (livery facilities available by arrangement). Thanks to recent investment of over £10 million, Walford provides some of the best land-based facilities in the region.

INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS The College is encouraging Level 3 students to take part in a minimum of 45-days of industry placement. The idea is for you to build and develop your skills in a genuine working environment, taking the theoretical knowledge of your course and putting this into practice. Your placements will take place outside of your normal college days, which may be one or two days a week, or in blocks.

What are the Benefits of Industry Placements for you? ■ Employers are always keen to take on workers with some

experience under their belt, which can be difficult straight after finishing your qualification. With an industry placement you can add this to your CV and stand out from other candidates. An industry placement will offer you the chance to learn more transferable and industrial skills from the industry’s experts. If you make a good impression on the employer, they may be interested in taking you on as a paid employee, either on a parttime basis, or as an apprentice. Experience life in a real working environment. This placement could be the first stepping stone to your future career.

Tips for finding your Industry Placement ■ Utilise your connections – Speak to your friends and

family, tutors, careers advisors or neighbours, they may know of somewhere suitable for you to enquire about a placement. ■ Search your local area – Have a look around your local area for businesses that you may not know about, newspapers are also a good way to find local employers. ■ Try a different angle – You could try looking for part-time vacancies in your chosen industry, you could get a work experience trial which leads on to employment. ■ Leave your details – Some employers may not be in a position to take you on for a placement, but leave your contact details with them, as their situation may change. ■ Make notes – Ensure that you know what you would like to ask before phoning, note who it is you have been speaking with, and any other relevant information during the call. ■ Aim for the top – When contacting companies, try to speak to the Manager, or the Human Resources (HR) department if it’s a larger company. ■ Keep Trying – Don’t be discouraged if you get turned down, don’t worry, just keep on looking. ■ Be prepared – When contacting employers, ensure you have your CV at the ready, including your skills and experience, these can serve as prompts during a conversation. ■ Always make a good impression – Ensure that you are polite and respectful when talking with employers, they are much more likely to remember you. ■ Look online – Businesses may have a section on their website where you can apply for work experience or voluntary work.

CHOOSING YOUR COURSE WHAT DO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT? When choosing your course it is a good idea to read through the following information so you know what to expect from your course, and which options are available to you. These steps outline how to go about choosing your course and are followed by more information to help you.

01 Where are you now? Check the progression table opposite to see what levels of study are currently available to you. It might be that you need to start on a lower level course in order to progress to a higher level of study, so check that your qualifications meet the entry requirements of the course you are considering.

02 Come to an Open Event This gives you the opportunity to speak directly to course tutors who are all experts in their fields. They can help you decide the best way forward. You can find dates for these events on page 3.

16-18 Study Programme Each student aged 16 –18 years at NSC has a study programme specifically tailored to meet their educational needs and career aspirations. It consists of the main chosen qualification, as well as further development of maths, English and employability skills. Its aim is to improve young peoples’ career prospects and also widen options for higher level study. These programmes include: ■ All full-time students aged 16 –18 years will study English

and maths as part of their studies. This will be either GCSE or functional skills, depending on prior GCSE grades and initial assessment. Those students who have already achieved sufficient grades will be supported through a programme of directed studies. Maths and English skills and the ability to apply them are seen as essential skills by universities and employers. Many universities now accept a Level 2 Functional Skill in maths and English as recognised qualifications which carry UCAS points. This is a government-driven initiative, fully supported by the College. ■ Each full-time student will participate in work experience, as

well as activities designed to develop the skills and confidence required for their progression. ■ Those students who aren’t able to study for a substantial

vocational qualification (e.g. if they have complex learning needs and/or disadvantage) will study a programme to develop their employability skills, this might include some work experience.

Adult Students Whilst adult students do not have study programmes, they do have access to the same support and resources as all other students. CAREERS WEEK Each year, the College hosts ‘Careers Week’ for all students. The event is full of employers, education providers and businesses, so students can find out more information about their future career options. SUPPORTING YOU HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT Equality & Diversity ‘Equality’ means treating all groups of people fairly, providing equality of opportunity and removing barriers to success. It is not about treating everybody the same – different people have different needs. MONEY MATTERS NSC believes in giving everyone equal opportunities to study further education. The College receives some funding from the Government to support student study and this varies depending on the course being studied, the student’s age and their level of study. Because of this, there are some fees that the College may have to pass on to students. The following information lists financial support available and we recommend contacting the Student Services for further information. Please note that the costs on course pages are for guidance purposes only and should be checked prior to enrolment. Are you aged between 16 and 19 years on 31 August 2019? For students who enrol on their further education full-time course before their 19th birthday or are continuing to attend a course they began before turning 19, there are no tuition or examination fees. However, some courses may charge fees to cover materials, equipment, specialist clothing, etc. Are you aged 19 or over? If you are aged 19 or over at the start of your course then tuition fees will vary. As everyone has individual circumstances then the best way to work out the fees relevant to you is to call and speak to Student Services on 01691 688029. It will also be helpful for you to read through the following information on this page regarding, the Advanced Learner Loan.

Advanced Learner Loan (19+) The Advanced Learner Loan provides support to adult students who are: ■ Aged 19-23 who already have a first full Level 3 qualification Or are: ■ Aged 24 or over, with or without a first full Level 3 qualification The Advanced Learner Loan enables adult students to access advanced (Level 3) and higher (Level 4) further education courses, with financial support similar to that which is available in higher education for tuition costs, from the Student Loans Company. This means rather than an individual having to pay for their course upfront they have the option of accessing an FE Loan that they will only start to repay once they have left the course and are earning over £25,000. Transport Costs Accessing local education and training can often be a challenge for some of our young people due to the high costs of travel. We have decided to offer subsidised travel on all routes for the 19/20 academic year, to enable the young people of North Shropshire to access education and training at their local college. Travel remains free on all routes where students are eligible for an NSC bursary. STUDENT SUPPORT Support for you

Student Accommodation

When you start college a team of people will support you. Your personal tutors are there to help and ensure you are on track with your course, arrange careers guidance and offer advice with any college queries you may have. The Student Services team and learning mentors can guide and support you with any academic or personal issues you may have, as well as offer advice on student finance or accommodation concerns. If you are a young carer, a care leaver or have looked after child status, you will also get the support of a pastoral mentor.

Walford campus has student accommodation available for students who would find a daily commute very difficult due to distance or specific circumstances. Ensuite and shared facility rooms are available and costs can be paid in instalments, they may also be funded by the 16 –18 or 19+ bursaries (terms and conditions apply). Additional Learning Support Additional Learning Support (ALS) for students with SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities), we want to make sure everyone has the same opportunity to be successful at North Shropshire College. If you need adjustments and support to get the most out of your course, please make sure you highlight your needs on the application and enrolment forms, please discuss your additional needs with your interviewing tutor and ask to speak to student services. The Additional Learning Support team (ALS) in Student Services is available if you need extra help because you have Special Educational Needs or a Disability. You may have an EHCP (Education, Health & Care Plan), a moving on plan or you may have a specific learning difficulty or disability. The support team can meet you, discuss your needs and plan what will work best for you alongside your course team. Our ALS team has experience and understanding of the needs of young people on the autistic spectrum, mental health needs, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), students with hearing loss, visually-impaired students, mobility difficulties, and a range of other needs, including medical conditions. You will work in partnership with the Student Services team to ensure the support is guided by you, so you have the best possible experience for all students studying with us at NSC. WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a paid job with an accompanying skills development programme, which allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal ‘off-the-job’ training and the opportunity to practise and embed new skills in a real work context. So, not only will you gain valuable experience, you will also be learning and earning at the same time. Apprenticeships have been designed by employers to meet employers’ needs for a particular sector or job role. Each apprenticeship defines the skills, knowledge, behaviours and formal qualifications that the apprentice needs to acquire in order to become competent in their chosen field, and to be awarded the status of fully qualified apprentice. Apprenticeships are nationally recognised as a fantastic pathway into the career of your choice and the College’s training provider County Training now offers apprenticeships in almost all industries.

Intermediate Apprenticeships

Approach an employer directly

(equivalent to five good GCSE passes)

You can contact an employer to see if they would like to take you on as an apprentice. They might not know that they need an apprentice until you contact them! Remember that you are hoping that they will take you on as an employee, so act professionally and make a good impression. If you can, find out a bit about the company first by visiting their website and preparing what you want to say. Remember there are other attributes that employers value, such as: ■ Enthusiasm ■ Willingness to learn ■ Reliability ■ Punctuality ■ Responsibility ■ Working as part of a team ■ Good sense of humour ■ Working on your own initiative

Intermediate Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 2 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Intermediate Apprenticeship may allow progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. To start an Intermediate Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five GCSEs (grade E/grade 2 or above).

Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A Level passes) Advanced Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 3 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Advanced Apprenticeship may allow progression onto a Higher Apprenticeship. To start an Advanced Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five good GCSEs (grade C/grade 4 or above) or have successfully completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship.

How long is an apprenticeship? The minimum length of an apprenticeship is 12 months, but some apprenticeships will be designed to last two, or more years. This will depend on the framework or standard being followed, the level of apprenticeship, the specific occupational area/sector and the prior skill levels of the apprentice.

What can I do after I complete my apprenticeship? There are a number of routes that you can take after an apprenticeship. You can use the skills that you have developed to carry on in employment. You can also continue with the apprenticeship scheme to progress to the next level of apprenticeship, such as an Advanced Apprenticeship.

How to apply and find an employer and get an apprenticeship

Course Introduction Biology is a complex and broad science suited to those with an interest in living organisms, and how they work and interact with their environment. Biology will also appeal to those who enjoy creative thinking and problem solving: a good choice if you are aiming at one of the very competitive leading universities.

Course Content This is an exciting and demanding subject that is delivered in an innovative and dynamic way. You will gain an understanding of biological facts and principles – gaining an appreciation of their significance by studying molecules, cells and systems, inheritance, evolution and ecosystems, as well as physiology and the environment. Principles are taught in the context of modern day themes and issues, such as how our actions enhance the antibiotic resistance of bacteria and studying lifestyle factors that increase the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Where will my course lead? Biology is considered a facilitating subject and is highly regarded by top universities. Selective universities and employers look for a science A Level as an indication of analytical skills, so this course is a good choice for both science and non-science related degrees. It can lead towards a wide range of university courses including Biochemistry, Conservation, Dentistry, Ecology, Marine Biology, Medicine, Neuroscience, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Sports Science and Veterinary Science. Students also frequently choose degree subjects such as Economics and Business Studies.

The course combines detailed theoretical knowledge with practical research including laboratory work, interpreting data to solve scientific problems and writing in a scientific way. Transferable skills such as data analysis, practical design and problem solving will be developed. You will also need to understand chemical processes within organisms, so some knowledge of chemistry is also useful.

English goes well with any subjects, but combines particularly well with Media Studies, Drama and other humanities and arts subjects. If you’re thinking of taking English at university, you can study it alongside English Literature.

Course Introduction Are you interested in why certain people speak like they do? Have you ever noticed how speech is influenced by gender or regional location? Do you know what makes a good communicator? Did you know that approximately 25,000 new words are added to the Oxford English Dictionary every year? Are you annoyed when your elders complain of teenagers’ “bad” English? English Language allows you a chance to actively engage with everyday language: to understand how it works, evolves and changes, whilst celebrating its diversity.

Course Content In addition to studying written language, A Level English Language looks closely at how English works as speech, and at new types of communication such as text messaging or tweeting. English is in a constant state of change, and your course will include a focus on how it has developed in the past, but also how it is developing now. You will study how children’s language develops and how the use of English varies both nationally and globally. You will create your own texts to suit different purposes and audiences and you will also develop your own language investigations.

Where will my course lead? Language skills are relevant to all academic and vocational subjects. You can go on to take a specialist degree in English Language, Language and Communications or Linguistics, or wider choices such as Law, Drama, Education, History or any of the Social Sciences. Career possibilities for English specialists range from teaching, journalism and publishing to speech and language therapy.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE A LEVEL

Environmental Science is a highly regarded A Level which counts as a science when applying for universities; it combines well with most other subjects. It would particularly suit students studying Applied Science, Animal Management, Land and Wildlife Management, Agriculture or Biology A Level. It is also ideal for those wanting to study science, but not specialise in just one.

Course Introduction Environmental Science is the scientific study of how humans are interacting with our planet, and examining impacts on the biological, physical and chemical cycles of Earth. It covers a broad scope of topics, all extremely relevant to anyone living on our planet and wishing to keep it habitable for the future.

Course Content You will study wildlife conservation and ecology, examining the need for, and methods of, protecting natural habitats. The atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere are studied in terms of harmful human influences to vital Earth processes; possible solutions and their efficacy are investigated. For practical investigations we take local trips to carry out ecological fieldwork, such as Elan Valley, the Centre for Alternative Technology and many more destinations. As the course continues we delve further into current important issues such as pollution and energy use in a global context, food production, fishing, forestry and sustainability.

Where will my course lead? Environmental Studies provides an ideal base for degrees such as Forestry, Countryside Management, Geography, Geology, other sciences, and teaching. Students may also progress directly into employment or vocational courses; ever evolving legislation and deepening concerns about environmental change mean that there are more careers in environmental management and research. FILM STUDIES A LEVEL

Film Studies combines well with any Arts or Media subjects such as Photography A Level, Art and Design, Creative Media Production or Computing. Film Studies and Media Studies are two distinct subject areas and can be studied alongside each other – Media Studies is broader in that it looks at a variety of other creative industries such as music and television.

Course Introduction Love film? Then A Level Film Studies is the course for you. You will develop your skills of analysis by studying film as an art form and exploring a wide range of films – from art house movies to blockbusters to Bollywood. You will also have the opportunity to put your ideas and skills into practice by making your own short film.

Course Content As well as analysing films, including ‘micro analysis’ of short extracts and broader study, you will examine how they are produced, marketed and exhibited to audiences – with particular focus on the role new media technologies have in the industry. The non-exam assessment work will include researched studies and the creation of your own mini-movie. You may choose to work in storyboard or screenplay, as well as using video.

Where will my course lead? This course will provide you with analytical, critical and creative skills that will be useful in just about any subject or career. You may progress to university and study a degree in Film or Media, or use Film Studies as a general entrance qualification relevant to a wide range of art and social science subjects. MATHEMATICS A LEVEL

• Mathematics develops your skills in analysis and challenges you to think rigorously. • Mathematics trains you to identify the important aspects of any problem and to work logically to find a solution. • Skills are transferable beyond the classroom and thus Mathematics is a highly respected qualification in many fields.

Mathematics combines well with any other subject, particularly the Sciences, Social Sciences, Business and Computer Science.

Where will my course lead?

In studying A Level Mathematics you will demonstrate your core intelligence, a logical mind and excellent problem solving skills. Mathematics builds on some of the concepts met in GCSE Maths and develops skills in algebra, calculus, trigonometry, and as the course advances, calculus and vectors.

Mathematics is clearly a requirement for anyone considering taking a degree course in Mathematics, Engineering, Computing and for most theoretical science courses. It is a highly valued subject and may lead to a variety of careers including accounting, business, computing, banking and engineering. Good mathematicians are in short supply and keenly sought after.

If you are thinking about becoming a psychologist you may consider doing some relevant volunteer work alongside your academic studies; this will enhance both university and job applications.

Course Introduction Psychology is the science of the mind. It looks at how individuals think, what they do and the way they are affected by their biological make-up and the wider social group. It requires a broad range of skills including good written communication skills, a retentive memory and analysis of research methods, studies and theories.

Course Content You will study how people interact, change and develop, how we think, how the nervous system works, how we differ from animals and how we decide what is normal. You will gain an insight into the workings of the human brain and explore a range of psychological explanations of behaviour. Key topics include: Cognitive Psychology (memory), Developmental Psychology (attachment), Research Methods, Biological Psychology (stress), Social Psychology (how we are influenced by others) and Individual Differences (mental health). As you discover how others think, you’ll also be gaining an insight into your own psyche and behavioural traits, which is a valuable asset in both your personal and working life. Voluntary work is recommended if you wish to pursue psychology as a degree and/or career.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION DIPLOMA

This is a life changing, academic preparatory course for progression to university-level study.

This course offers an alternative Level 3 route to A Levels and BTEC for those who want to progress to higher education but do not have sufficient or suitable qualifications. There is an emphasis on building your confidence and the course design takes into consideration the possibility that many students may not have been in full-time education for some time. You will find that you receive a high level of support from both the teaching team and from other members of the group. This course will open doors to university-level qualifications and will prepare you for studying at this level. Teaching hours are designed to be relatively family friendly.

• For some vocational degrees there will be an expectation of work experience in a relevant area. • The motivation and determination to succeed on an intensive programme.

Assessment is continuous with a range of assignment methods including essays, reports, presentations, projects and practical work. There will also be some in-class open book and closed book examinations.

Entry Requirements • Grade C (grade 4) or higher in GCSE English language and maths. Grade C in GCSE science for those wanting to progress to primary teaching degrees. It is possible to take either maths or English GCSE alongside the Access course if necessary.

APPLIED SCIENCE LEVEL 3 Equivalent to three A Levels, this course will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills you need for progressing on to a science-based degree or starting a career in a range of scientific fields, including biomedical, chemical engineering or forensic analysis.

This course develops your understanding of scientific theory and skills, coupled with experimental techniques that help you to be successful in either employment or at university. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to perform a variety of biology and chemistry experimental work as well as learning how to work safely within a laboratory environment, using maths and statistics to analyse experimental data. Optional units include looking at the use of radiation in diagnostic testing or the collection and analysis of forensic evidence from crime scenes. Many of our past students have successfully gone on to study a wide range of science degrees at university from biomedical science to midwifery or secured apprenticeships in local scientific laboratories.

ART & DESIGN LEVEL 3 You will be trained in the latest techniques and skills, covering a range of new processes and critiquing the work of others.

This programme provides you with the necessary expertise and skills to enter higher education. It also allows you to develop your own creativity, as well as preparing for a career in the creative industries. The programme is suitable if you are progressing from a relevant Level 2 course or from suitable GCSEs. Throughout the programme you will explore the techniques and materials of areas that you may not have studied before. Each student’s creativity is nurtured and encouraged in a supportive environment and you will be tutored by practising artists and designers. As you develop your portfolio of work, you will also benefit from specialist facilities, in purpose built studios and workshops.

CELEBRATE YOUR CREATIVITY The end of year exhibition is an opportunity for all students to display their work. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not only a component of the course, but also a celebration of the individual student creativity and talent which can be shared with an invited audience. Students are demonstrating skills such as photography, computer-aided graphics, and working with mixed media for both 2D and 3D projects. Students have also had the opportunity to pursue their personal interest in textiles, ceramics and fine art. The students not only exhibit their work at the end of term, they also have a portfolio which can support their application to universities or employment.

BEAUTY THERAPY LEVEL 2 This course is designed for any individual who has a passion for beauty therapy and high standards of customer service. It is professional and client-focused where you can learn the latest skills in skin, nail and beauty care.

Training is undertaken in salons which are fully-equipped with the latest industry products and equipment. You will experience working in a professional industry environment, with genuine customers and you will combine this with relevant theory and practical learning. There is an option to study additional certificates to the Level 2 qualification and also to be involved in the College’s Hair and Beauty Show. This course will prepare you for a career in beauty therapy, which offers many exciting opportunities, such as managing and running your own salon, travelling the world working on a luxury liner, being a therapist in a prestigious health farm or spa, or teaching your skills to others at a college or private centre.

CATERING - PROFESSIONAL COOKERY LEVEL 1 This is an introductory course covering the basic essential skills of professional cookery to enable you to develop a career as a professional chef.

This course will provide you with an introductory pathway for further study on the Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery, an apprenticeship or entering into employment. The students thoroughly captivated the judges with their skills and came away from the competition with two certificates of merits, four silver medals and a ‘Best in Class’ award for culinary vegetable cuts. CHILDCARE - EARLY YEARS EDUCATION & CARE LEVEL 3 Develop your knowledge and skills to work in an early years setting as well as gaining a qualification to progress onto further courses relating to early years education and care.

This course prepares you to work in childcare or education related careers. It provides you with the knowledge, skills and understanding required for working with children from birth to five years old. CREATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTION LEVEL 3 Equivalent to three A Levels, this course will give you the skills you need for a career in the creative digital media industries, including film, graphic design and gaming.

Exploring both the practical and theoretical aspects of creative media, you will be utilising professional hardware and software, including our state-of-the-art DSLR cameras and our brand new Apple Mac suite with all of the latest Adobe applications, including; Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop. HAIR & BEAUTY LEVEL 1 Learning in the College’s industrystandard salon you will develop the essential basic skills to discover your career in the hair and beauty sector.

We have a working salon open to members of the public, providing you with a real working environment and allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. The broad range of knowledge and skills gained will enable you either to seek employment or progress to a relevant Level 2 course. You will improve your English and maths as well as developing your confidence in your ability to progress. PUBLIC SERVICES STUDENTS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; OUT & ABOUT Our students build friendships by working as a team and developing their fitness levels through practical activities, both of which are vital in the public services sector. They also improve their skills and confidence; which helps to bring out the character of each individual student. Being with their peers and a supportive group of staff allows students to conquer their fears and become stronger, more confident individuals. Students take part in a five day trip to Outward Bound Centre in Aberdovey. The week is designed for them to advance their leadership skills, to work as part of a team and progress their personal achievements in different challenges. The students work as a team to get every member over a variety of outdoor challenges and obstacles. Course lecturer, Marie Davis commented, â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a fantastic week with amazing students, it was a pleasure to watch them develop their skills and personal achievement.â&#x20AC;? Students experience a number of guest speakers from the emergency services and the armed services, where they are educated about career pathways and application opportunities. There are also many day trips to enhance the learning experience, such as regular hill walking and numerous outdoor fitness activities. Additional to this is the use of PGL outdoor centre where students have the opportunity to complete land-based and water-based adventure units.

EQUINE CARE LEVEL 2 This is a programme suitable for anyone wishing to eventually pursue a career with horses, particularly if you have some hands-on experience with horses already. It provides an excellent route to further qualifications or the world of work.

A balance between practical and theory sessions gives you a real insight into the everyday work within industry and on the College’s equine yard. As well as this, there are duties where you become a member of the team and work with them to care for the horses on the yard, developing the skills needed to work in the equine industry. EQUINE MANAGEMENT LEVEL 3 This course gives you the experience, knowledge and qualifications necessary for a wide range of responsible posts in the equine industry. If you are flexible, enjoy working with horses and wish to progress to a career at supervisory and management level, then this is the course for you!

A balance between practical and theory sessions, gives you a real insight into the everyday work within industry and here on the College yard. As well as this, there are duties where you become a member of the equine team and work with them to care for the horses on a daily basis, thus developing the practical skills needed to work in the equine industry. This programme covers many aspects of equestrianism with particular emphasis on science, horse husbandry and work experience. It is designed to equip students for success in employment and develops knowledge and understanding in practical skills at operational and supervisory level. You will acquire skills and knowledge to enable you to meet changing circumstances in the modern world. It is a vocational course equivalent to A Levels which will enable you to progress on to higher education. We also go on trips and visits as well as having in guest speakers to keep you up to date with industry. Work experience is built into the course to further enhance your employability skills. This qualification gives you the opportunity to study a range of specialist technical practical skills and knowledge that build upon the core skills of safe working practices.

FOUNDATION STUDIES - LIVING INDEPENDENTLY ENTRY LEVEL 2 A one year foundation course to support you in gaining the skills for further education, voluntary or paid work and independent life.

The course is very practical and hands on with lots of opportunities to develop skills in a practical environment. You will have the opportunity to work in the Scholars kitchen at our Oswestry Campus and develop your skills in hospitality and catering. Based on the Walford campus, you will also be working towards units in land-based studies and independent living. This course is ideal for school leavers and mature students who would like to develop skills for independent living as well as gaining some vocational knowledge in the land-based and hospitality sectors. The vocational units you will study in hospitality will provide you with an insight into what it is like working in the hospitality industry and will support you in progression into this area of work or further study.

LAND AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT LEVEL 2 This course provides you with a range of specialist technical practical skills, and knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or further learning and training within the land and wildlife management industries.

This qualification gives you the opportunity to study a range of specialist, technical, practical skills and knowledge that build upon the core skills required for working in the countryside, such as; estate maintenance skills, population surveys, safe use of equipment and machinery with further areas of study such as land use and recreation, and pest and predator control. You can then learn additional specialist skills such as woodland habitat management, estate skills, machinery operations, countryside recreation, surveying and identification. We endeavour to work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training. Trips, visits and guest speakers will provide demonstrations and talks on the industry. MOTOR VEHICLE LEVEL 1 There are more than 30 million vehicles on Britain’s roads providing work for an army of skilled servicing and maintenance staff? This broad-based course consisting of both practical and theory assessments aimed at those wishing to progress within this dynamic industry.

You will have the opportunity to use our fully-equipped workshop, one of the largest motor vehicle facilities in the region, and our extensive fleet of vehicles to gain an insight into the repair techniques required in the motor vehicle repairs industry. This introduction will prepare you for progression to the Level 2 and 3 qualifications (full-time or as an apprentice) where you will be using our modern diagnostic scan-tools, wheel alignment systems, tyre fitting machines and the latest auto data plus, you will also have dedicated classrooms. You will repair a large range of vehicles under expert tuition from our highly experienced teaching staff.

MOTOR VEHICLE LEVEL 2 Our first-class courses are expressly developed to assist our students on their journey and, equally, we have professional and dedicated engineering lecturers to deliver the courses in our fully equipped workshop, one of the largest motor vehicle facilities in the region.

As there are a growing number of vehicles on the road with complex engine and chassis management systems, there is a growing need for skilled technicians and competent motor vehicle engineers. This course is for those having completed the Level 1 in Motor Vehicle. Further progression to Level 3 will ensure that you are fully prepared for employment in the motor industry, an apprenticeship or transition to such as Motor Sport Engineering. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. At Level 2, focus is placed on the introduction and development of the four main vehicular systems engine, chassis, transmission and electrical.

MOTOR VEHICLE LEVEL 3 This course includes all aspects of motor vehicle engineering, such as; electronics, hybrid and electrical vehicles, chassis, engine and relevant ancillary systems.

You will explore the world of diagnostics, oscilloscopes, wave patterns and air conditioning in the electrical unit. You will also look at caster, camber, KPI, ABS and use the latest 4 wheel alignment equipment in the chassis unit. In the engine unit you will become familiar with Lambda, knock and camshaft sensors whilst understanding the reasons for lead lag and BTDC when valve timing is discussed. The transmission unit will explain the workings of auto boxes, CVT transmission drives, differentials and final drives plus, synchro hubs, clutches and DSG transmissions.
