APPLIED SCIENCE LEVEL 3 Equivalent to three A Levels, this course will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills you need for progressing on to a science-based degree or starting a career in a range of scientific fields, including biomedical, chemical engineering or forensic analysis.
This course develops your understanding of scientific theory and skills, coupled with experimental techniques that help you to be successful in either employment or at university. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to perform a variety of biology and chemistry experimental work as well as learning how to work safely within a laboratory environment, using maths and statistics to analyse experimental data. Optional units include looking at the use of radiation in diagnostic testing or the collection and analysis of forensic evidence from crime scenes. Many of our past students have successfully gone on to study a wide range of science degrees at university from biomedical science to midwifery or secured apprenticeships in local scientific laboratories.
Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria. Study options may include: • Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Applied Biology or Applied Chemistry • A range of university degrees, including nursing, midwifery, forensic science and others. Employment options may include: • Laboratory technician • Crime scene analyst

Topics you will cover include: • Genetics & Genetic Engineering • Applications of Organic Chemistry • Contemporary Issues in Science • Biomedical Science • Medical Physics Applications • Forensic Evidence, Collection & Analysis Assessment is continuous and industry related, with assignments, tests, projects and practical work. You will sit one examination each year, with the rest of the course being assessed via practical work and coursework. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level. Please see page 8 for more details.
Entry Requirements • Five GCSE passes at grade C (grade 4) or above, (including maths and English) or a Merit or above in the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science
