The great escape The CHANEL Cruise collection is a dreamy tribute to carefree days.
A
lthough the lockdown managed to cancel Virginie Viard’s plans to present the CHANEL Cruise 2020/21 collection in Capri, as creative director of CHANEL she still skilfully evoked a trip around the Mediterranean through the collection itself. Noting that the Maison had to adapt to circumstances, she says: “Not only did we decide to use fabrics that we already had, but the collection, more generally, evolved towards a trip around the Mediterranean… The islands, the scent of the eucalyptus, the pink shades of the bougainvillea.” The result is a beautiful evocation of carefree days, with clothing that has been designed for those who love to travel light. As such, easy to wear, multipurpose items that go together perfectly are among the delights, including long skirts that can be transformed into strapless dresses when pulled up, and long jackets that can be worn by day for a casual look or by night over an embroidered bandeau top with jeans. Texture and weight are key to ease of movement, and for this collection supple leather akin to a second skin makes suits fabulously graceful and wearable, as does tweed that’s been left unlined for more fluidity. In its entirety, the collection exudes a free-spirited, laid-back allure that is as irresistible as the desire to travel.
