I
n a world that feels as if it has been turned upside down by the pandemic, the new collection from MM6 fits right in. As the diffusion line of Maison Margiela, MM6 has always embraced the avant-garde. Now, for Spring/Summer 2020/21, the designs reflect the alternative realities in which we are all living. Many of us, for example, will have found that days during lockdown or quarantine placed the emphasis on being at home rather than at work, or the importance of connecting online via Zoom rather than in person. In this new collection, garments appear chopped and cropped to emphasize this break with formality, and traditional silhouettes are manipulated to become something new. Subtle distortions, trompe l’oeil effects and plays on proportion are all here, bringing everyone a choice of stylish outfits that make sense whether video conferencing or daydreaming of life beyond the pandemic.
