Success and set-backs are factors in each day of life, whether here at school or elsewhere. Each person in this student body has learned anew to deal constructively with these facts of life over the course of this year.

The faculty has applauded your triumphs in the

classroom and in extra-curricular activities. Individuals have shown special growth on teams, as newly qualified members of National Honor Society, as Lower School Service Club participants, as National Merit Semi-Finalists, as members of the God Squad, as Middle School Dean's Club

Dealing with disappointments, whether in the f<rrm of a lower than expected test grade or a one point less in volleyball, has often served to strengthen you. When your resolve to perform more satisfactorily was increased by those set-

backs, you learned valuable lessons.

It is my hope for each of you that you will continue to grow from your successes and learn to profit from disappointments. I've been proud to work with you as you've met the many challenges of 1982-83!

Bonjour, mes amis!

Each year the yearbook is dedicated to some outstanding faculty or staff member. This year we are proud and honored to dedicate the 30th edition of THE SHIELD to a man who is truly an important part of life here: Mr. Mitchell "Mike" Berard.

Monsieur Berard has taught French at St. Martin's since 1952. Born and raised in Louisiana, Mr. Berard grew up speaking French. He continued to study the language both in the U.S. and in France.

Known for his beautiful paintings, his love of sailing and his pipe, Mr. Berard's enthusiasm in the classroom leaves his students with an appreciation for French culture and the fine arts. Through his many years of service, he has been an avid supporter of the athletic program, and his work in beautifying the campus is evident by the many trees he has helped to plant.

He is a man of many talents, only one of which is hamburger cooking, as seen on past St. Martin's Day picnics.

What more can we say about a man who has given so much of himself?

Merci beaucoup et au revoir!

Eclipse of the Decade Monitoring the Changes

Eclipses of the Moon offer one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy skywatching. The pace doesn't rush you, since eclipses usually last more than an hour, and their changes are subtle and slow. This blockbuster began on the night of July 5, lasting until the next morning. You didn't need a telescope; the whole show was best seen with the naked eye.

Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, causing the shadow of our planet to obscure the Moon. These eclipses happen only at Full Moon, but not every month.

Some lunar eclipses are not total

ll:22p.m. m f * J ;

because the Moon passes only through the lighter part of the Earth's shadow, or penumbra. But this eclipse was total and spectacular since the Moon passed through the darkest part of the shadow, the umbra.

North American observers waited seven years for this look at the eclipsed Moon. They were not disappointed. It was one of the most impressive of the decade. You couldn't have asked for a better time of year, and with clear skies, nearly everyone had a chance to view at least some part of lunar totality.

Continued A New Face Improvements

r Last summer, the Middle and Upper Schools were encased in a large cloud of dust. This cloud was not a sign of dirt and decay, but rather a sign of improvements and progress. A constant increase in the size of the St. Martin's community had created a need for several changes.

In order to keep up with the growing number of students, more classrooms were created by splitting some of the existing rooms, Left. The creation of new classrooms, however, was not the only change.

One Middle School classroom was given for the new Computer Center and Mathematics resource lab, Left. The increased space made possible an expansion of the computer curriculum, room for eight new computers, and still more in the future.

The old Computer Room was then converted into the new English resource lab, Below. With this lab, the teachers now have an area where they can keep materials and give extra help to students.

This rip-saw became a familiar sight at StM. Without its help, many of the changes and improvements could never have been made.

Colonial Day

Colonial Day has become one of the most popular sixth grade activities. Students learn about the history and culture of those times. Crafts such as candle making and spinning are demonstrated and colonial type foods are sampled. Of course, colonial costumes are a must.

Balloons and streamers hanging from the ceiling, auctioning off senior football players, making last minute dates, wandering minds in classes, and a mounting air of excitement characterized Homecoming week, October 4, 1982. The football game against Newman was highlighted by returning alumni, presentation of the homecoming court, and the postgame alumni reception. On Saturday night, the court was presented by senior football players.

Easter at St. Martin's

There are Easter Bonnets, Easter Parades, Easter Bunnies, but none are as fun as the Easter Egg Hunt. This year the Sixth grade and the Kindergarten combined forces to hunt out the elusive eggs. The eggs were cleverly hidden, but in the end they all got captured. There were eggs of every color of the rainbow, but what was really the highlight was seeing Mr. Ellis, Mr. Breazeale, and Mrs. Minor don costumes and show up as Easter Bunnies. Besides being fun, the hunt provided a chance for the Lower schoolers and the Middle schoolers to spend time with one another.

Every Senior.

Upon walking through the halls on Oct. 30, one might have thought he was in a different world. Senior Weird Day traditionally brings out the outrageous creativity of the senior class members. Mickey Mouse, elegant ladies, a Plaid Man and Singing Telegram girls were only some of the costumes seniors came up with.

After a hard day, Susan shares her insights with Dr. Mooney.

Several days later, on Senior Teacher Day, the class was able to see and experience education from the other side of the desk. Senior students took over the role of teachers in most every grade. The consensus was that sitting in class taking notes is much easier than teaching.

Mexico: Highlight

of the 8th Grade Trips

In addition to the wilderness and Washington trips, this year a choice of Mexico was offered as a choice for eighth graders. These spring "getaways" are not only an opportunity to see new places, but also a chance to develop good relationships between the members of the class and the faculty.

A Family Celebration

St. Martin's Day this year was a different kind of celebration. The school's teachers and staff were honored during a schoolwide chapel service, followed by a big lunch on the field where students from the Upper, Middle, and Lower schools shared their lunches. After the brown bag feast, each school division participated in a variety of activities ranging from intramurals to scavenger hunts. Once again on St. Martin's Day, we celebrated and strengthened the sense of unity and pride that characterizes St. Martin's School.

Heavenly Days Are Here Again! $

Heavenly Days this year was an exciting and "heavenly" event. Everyone oohed and aahed over the delicious selection of gourmet foods, desserts, and pastries. The gym proved to be a popular spot for the shopper. Books, games, plants, toys, crafts, and all sorts of collectibles filled the gym with exciting buys and bargains. Outside, booths and games of all sorts lined the parking lot and the Lower School playground. Activities like finding needles in haystacks, dunking teachers in a tub of water, taking pictures with E. T., jumping on the spacewalk and eating hot dogs were very popular. Overall the fair pulled in $35,000 for St. Martin's. Our thanks and appreciation go to the Mother's Club which organized the event.

Something for everyone it was. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was the highlight of Fine Arts Week. The musical drew in crowds of people. The show released some talents that were hidden, and some that should have stayed hidden! (the courtesans that is.)

on the Way to the Forum

Theatrically speaking, this year was a big success at STM. The cast size of shows continues to increase, as do the number of people trying out for the shows. From Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the first Faculty production, to GODSPELL, the first Student directed production, we have discovered talents and learned from the contents of the shows.

Ring Day this year was a very successful event. Preparation for the ceremony began with the matching of Juniors and Seniors. Each Senior gave a ring to a Junior as a traditional symbol of the Senior's departure and the Junior's acceptance of responsibility.

Practices were held a week before the day with Father Byrd organizing the proper steps to the ceremony. When the day finally arrived, all the boys appeared in their coats and ties and the girls in their bright spring dresses. After a brief speech by Mr. Jonassen, the rings were given. Following this, everyone socialized at the reception outside the Chapel which was sponsored by the Mother's Club, and then to Augie's restaurant for a delicious lunch.

Excellence in Leadershi

Boys'and Girls' State

When outstanding Juniors throughout the state go to Boys' and Girls' State, they run a mockgovernmenl. This program gives practical knowledge, experience in politics and opportunity. The objective is to educate our class leaders in responsibilities, citizenship, and privileges. This year's representatives were Ona Carson, Leanne Hennessey, Hans Jonassen, and Jim Hamlin. Alternates were Michael Harold, Baltzer LeJeune, Ann Fischer and Missy Nicholadis.

National Merit SemiFinalists

Only 15,000 students throughout the United States are selected for this honor. They are selected by the previous year's PSAT scores. They will receive finalist standing if their SAT scores and grades are above average, and they are recommended by the school.

Membership in the National Honor Society is probably one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a high school student. The scholastic requirements for seniors are an overall average of a "B" and for juniors, a "B+." It is more than an honor though, it is a responsibility and an obligation to help improve one's surroundings. The National Honor Society promotes Leadership, Character, Scholarship, and Service. This year the Society sponsored student tutoring, and next year, the members hope to expand their service pro- jects to outside the school community, such as helping the March of Dimes or the I I

Student Council

Who is it that organized elections, served up food before drama productions, whiPPed the uPPer school into a frenzied PennY drive, sponsored homeccming and generally reflects the heartbeat of the school? The Student Council, composed of rePresentatives

elected from each class, is one of the hardest working and imPortant organizations on campus.

Under the leadershiP of President Jim Hamlin and with the help of advisors Mr. Perez, Mr. Marsalis and Miss Long, the council did a superb job this Year.

Quiz Bowl

The 1982-1983 Varsity Quiz Bowl team produced another winning season for STM. Captain Hans Jonassen led team members John Wallin. Andrew Thigpen. David Snyder and alternare Cathrvn Abbott to the semi-final round. However, our hopes for a Jrd st.aigtit championship were thwarted by arihrivals Isadore Newman as we were defeated by a mere 40 points in the semi-finals.

The highlight of the year was a luncheon given by Pan-American Life Insurance Company (sponsors of VQB), where Hans was awarded the distinc[ion of Most Valuable Player. Congratula- tions to all from the coaches, Mrs. Wells, Mrs. Tollefson and Mr. McCain. We have high hopes for next year with an experienced group of Quiz Bowl Club members returning.

Creativity Through Publications

The Shield

The Shield is the yearbook publication. There are many activities and skills involved in producing a yearbook. A student can learn the basics of graphic design, copy writing, and photography.

Now all of the above occur theoretically, but along with these, students experience frustration, panic, an increased knowledge of the total schools' activities and the satisfaction of seeing one's work in print.

Halo

The Halo, the school newspaper does an excellent job of informing students about what is haPPening at the school as well as away from it.

Faculty summer acitivities, senior baby Pictures, editorials and exPosees bY Steve Rizzo and the "Underground Gourmet" were some of the most popular articles this Year.

Everyone looks forward to each edition of the HaIo. Within minutes, the PaPer has been circulated and enjoyed by all.

Lyre

The Lyre, the literary magazine, comes out twice a year and consists of poetry, short stories, essays, plays and artwork by the school's faculty, students and alumni. The staff engages in many thrilling and exhilerating tasks such as proofreading, laying out, folding, collating and stapling. CIubs!

The club program was instituted this year offering students a wide variety of clubs to join. The Fashion Club was surprisingly successful and put on two shows. The production of "Firebird" by the Dance Club was an excellent exhibition of ballet as an art form. Besides the ones pictured, there were devoted Quiz Bowl, Spanish and science clubs. Of course, just as popular was the third period cafeteria club.

Boy's Varsity Baseball

1983 proved to be a rebuilding year for the varsity baseball team. "Losing almost all of the powerful 1982 team via graduation, the team battled inexperience and costly injuries all season long and despite a very slow start, finished on a high note by winning its last six games to finish with an 8-17 record.

Senior captain Jeff Armstrcng led the team in virtually every

department and for his efforts was named All-District, All-East Bank, and Most Valuable Player. Juniors Danny Hughes and Drew Calhoun were named Honorable Mention AII-District. Seniors John Burlingame and Armstrong were also selected AII Tournament in the Saint Martin's Invitational Tourney. Seniors Harry Brammel and Don Aleman shared the Most Improved Player award.

Boys Varsity Baseball A Touch of Class

The 1982-83 season was both disappointing and rewarding. The team finished with a 1215 record on a schedule that included several tough Quad A teams. The team posted a 9-7 record in district playthe first winning record in district for many years. The team was led by co-captains Brett Chaisson and Jim Hamlin both of whom received all District and All East Bank honors.

The season ended in disappointment as the Saints missed the playoffs by half a game, but had defeated both the district champs and runner up Newman and Redeemer.

So though it was a disappointing experience not to make the playoffs the 82-83 season can be counted as a success and a building block for the future.

St. Martin's Football 1982

"The Best Is Yet to Come"

Despite a losing record for the season, this year's team was a success in many ways. Individual honors were received by a few well deserved athletes and eyes were opened by many that the Saints were down but not out. The 1982 football team never gave up and always worked hard. The team's determination paid off as they defeated Pope John Paul and Ridgewood Prep on Cox Cable

T.V. this past season.

Some of the honors were won by John Burlingame (District leader in Kickoff returns, Honorable Mention "All District" at safety), Mark McGinnis (2nd in District at punting), George Di Liberto (second team "All District" at defensive tackle, Honorable Mention "All East Bank"), Hans Luetkemeier (1st team "All East Bank" Place Kicker, 2nd team

The coaches were extremely proud of this group of young men and wish the twelve departing seniors a great deal of success in their future.

Middle School Football A Spectacular 9-1 Record!

The Middle School football team had a FANTASTIC season! The finest team ever to come out of the Middle school was scored on by only three teams. They played the toughest schedule so far.

Leading offensive players were Reagan, DeValle, Berke, Roohi and Edwards. Defensively, Phillips, Stoutz, Lykes and Hodges were outstanding as well.

Coach Armstrong characterized his team as aggressive, enthusiastic, quick and they consistently developed into a powerhouse on a daily basis.

Golf '83 Right on Coursell

The 1983 golf season was summed up very succinctlY bY Coach Edie Long who said, "Young teamwet season!". The team played and practiced at the Colonial Country Club. The strongest member of the team was Jim

Hamlin. The rainy spring weather was the cause for the cancellation of many of their tournaments. Perhaps next year with some experience and consistentlY good weather, the golf team will have a more notable season.

Outdoor Ed ,':

Outdoor Ed? Not just another alternative to P.E.! Outdoor education under the leadership of Mickey Landry has grown to be an unforgettable course.

Students see films, repair equipment, learn about the environment and practice their paddling, climbing and survival skills in the swamps, hills and rivers of the Southeast.

But, there is something intangible that is learned in Outdoor Ed. Friendship, camaraderie and trust are an important outgrowth of the program. Individuals from different backgrounds are brought together to appreciate nature and their relation to it. In the process, these individuals form a closely knit group.

Outdoor Education provides one of the most unique and valuable learning experiences available at St. Martin's.

Soccer A Popular Sport

Thirty-five boys came out for soccer this year. The team played in twenty games, did a decent job at the Selsa Invitational, and earned third place in the District. The co-captains were David Celsner and Don Aleman who earned the MIP and MVP awards respectively. The team bought their own uniforms, the Dad's Club donated portable poles and twenty new soccer balls were contributed as well by a parent. Coaches Perez and McCain feel that the next season looks promising, as only four seniors will be lost due to graduation and most of the starters will be returning.

Girl's Softball

The Girls Softball team finished the season with a Sth place in the district. Their record was 3-8. The team beat Newman twice and Country Day once. The Most Valuable Player award went to Tracy W. Moore (Jr. Shortstop) who led in hitting and fielding. The Most Improved Players were Peyton Petit (Jr. 1st Base) and Jeanne Herrington (Jr. 2nd base). All District selections went to Tracey W. Moore for her position as shortstop and Missy Nicoladis for 3rd base. The highlight of the season was when Jeanne Herrington threw the ball at the umpire! Even though there are five seniors graduating, there remain five starters which will be a good foundation for a successful season next spring!

Varsity Wrestling

The wrestling team has finally arrived! After four years of defeat as a team due to a lack of wrestlers, the Saint Martin's Wrestling Team has become a force to be reckoned with. Despite the quality of such past wrestlers as Martin Muller, Alan and Paul Kirshbom, Arnesto Rodriguez, Bill Coloumb and various "sometimes" wrestlers, the team never had the numbers necessary to compete as a team. When 9 of 13 weight classes are forfeited, it simply doesn't matter how good the four wrestlers are.

This year, however, the team underwent a big change. The large crop of Middle School wrestlers which Coach Hosli has been training for three years has finally been harvested, with awesome results. The team swept through dual meets defeating such Division I powerhouses as Riverdale, Ehret and East Jefferson and Division II schools like John Curtis, Port Sulphur and Higgins.

The team also did surprisingly well in tournaments with exceptional performances by eighth grader Todd DeMonte, freshmen Hans Ryden, Clay Tidwell, Lee Abbott, Brady Wood and Sean O'Neil. Also, sophomores Russel Levy, and Pat Calhoun, juniors Drew Calhoun and team captain Paul Kirshbom. The addition of the raw power provided by the three Calhoun brothers and David Favaloro added a new facet to St. Martin's wrestling which had up to now been a team of primarily technical wrestlers.

Despite the three defeats at the hands of Division I giants Rummel, DelaSalle and East St. John, everyone in the state was impressed by the sudden rise to prominence by the STM team. Many other teams now look at St. Martin's as being one of the teams to beat in Division II.

Considering the fact that the team was composed of one eighth grader, 8 freshmen, 3 sophomores, two juniors and one senior, it seems that the team can do nothing but improve. Practically the whole team will be returning next year and not only will be a power to be reckoned with, will soon be a power to be feared!
