Elected Experience: Current Mayor of Tacoma, Former Deputy Mayor & City Councilmember; Serve on the Boards of Puget Sound Regional Council, Sound Transit, Tacoma-Pierce County Economic Development Board, Pierce Transit, Foundation for Tacoma Students, and Workforce Central. Former Chair, Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health and the Tacoma Gang Reduction Project; Past President & Commissioner, Metro Parks Board. Other Professional Experience: Over 30 years of public, private and nonprofit experience. U.S. Army veteran; President/CEO, Tacoma Urban League; Director of Community Development, Tacoma Rainiers. Education: Lincoln High School; Completed courses at Pierce College & City University. Community Service: Senior Fellow, American Leadership Forum; Choir Director, Allen A.M.E. Church. Statement: Four years ago, I promised to ensure Tacoma remains a place where everyone can fulfill their destiny. Although it’s been an incredibly difficult year, with two pandemics hitting us at once – COVID-19 & systemic racism - I know Tacoma will overcome these challenges. As we address systemic racism, I’m more resolved to level the playing field, ensure opportunities are available to everyone and build an anti-racist, just and equitable city for all. When COVID-19 struck, we redirected city resources innovatively, using federal funds to keep us safe & healthy, residents housed and businesses supported. I will continue to support our community as we re-open by protecting essential workers and our most vulnerable neighbors, including homeless, youth and seniors. With rents and housing costs on the rise, I will work to provide more housing so everyone has a place to call home. I will invest in building better roads, sidewalks and transit service, create good-paying jobs, tackle our climate crisis and enhance our safety net.
Elected Experience: This is Steve’s first run for public office. Other Professional Experience: I have worked for the Tacoma School District and spent most of my life in Construction and Land Management. Also, television production for Ed Hume, local and national television. Education: Stadium HS, Pierce College. Community Service: Working at Gault Middle School, I became heavily involved in the surrounding neighborhoods. I dealt with Conflict Resolution and gang involvement with the children of the east side. By far, my most fulfilling and important involvement in the community, having a profound effect on my life. I have been heavily involved in Tacoma’s thriving art and music scene. Statement: I’m Steve Haverly. My family has lived in Tacoma for four generations. My father was a decorated Captain in the Army’s Green Beret Special Forces, stationed at Fort Lewis. My first years were on the base. I went to Grant Elementary, Jason Lee Junior High and Stadium High School. This deep connection to the city is part of why I’m running to be our Mayor. Tacoma is Washington’s best kept secret. A great place to live, work and raise a family. Unfortunately, too much of what has made Tacoma special is being lost, decisions of our city government making us too like Seattle. We are a city of blue collar workers, white collar workers, artists, writers, and talents of all kinds. This diversity is because Tacoma has been pro-jobs, I will defend that legacy and work to expand our local economy. We must preserve public safety, I support better policing, not defunding policing. I also believe in increasing housing, while preserving neighborhood character. As Mayor, I will bring Leadership and energy to our city. I’m proud to be genuinely non-partisan. In a time of great division, and a very rough couple of years, we need unity now more than ever.
Tacoma’s challenges don’t have quick fixes, but we’ve shown that when we lift each other up, we are stronger together. I ask for your vote to serve four more years as your Mayor.
