Nuestro sector encara un gran reto que nos hace estar siempre al día, innovando y dando lo mejor de nosotros con el fin de reducir el impacto ambiental.
Este año, volvemos a formar parte del Desafío de Vuelo Sostenible 2023 de SkyTeam (TSFC23). Tras el éxito de la primera edición, en la que participamos 16 compañías pertenecientes a la alianza, Sky Team lanza nuevamente esta iniciativa que busca explorar, probar y compartir todo aquello que pueda contribuir a que las operaciones aéreas sean cada vez más eficientes y definir buenas prácticas para el futuro sostenible de la aviación.
El uso de biocombustible, como medida para avanzar en la ansiada descarbonización del sector o los procedimientos llevados a cabo en tierra, son algunas de las medidas aplicadas que minimizan el impacto en el medio ambiente. De igual modo, se llevan a cabo otras prácticas, implantadas a bordo por Air Europa desde hace años, como el uso de materiales biodegradables, la segregación de residuos o los menús sostenibles.
Además, se aplican medidas que permiten mejorar la eficiencia de cada vuelo y cumplir con el objetivo estratégico de la OACI (Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional) de reducir un 2% anual el total de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.
En el equipo humano que integra Air Europa somos plenamente conscientes de la importancia de cumplir este hito que marcará un antes y un después, y que, sin duda, será el mejor legado que podremos dejar a nuestras generaciones venideras.

Our sector faces a great challenge that requires us to be constantly up to date, innovating and doing our utmost to reduce our environmental impact.
This year, we are once again taking part in SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge 2023 (TSFC23). Following the success of the first event, in which 16 companies belonging to the alliance took part, Sky Team is once again launching this initiative that seeks to explore, test and share everything that can contribute to making air travel more efficient and defining best practices for the sustainable future of aviation.
The use of biofuel, as a means of advancing in the longed-for decarbonisation of the sector, and the procedures carried out on the ground are some of the measures applied that minimise the impact on the environment. Similarly, other practices have been in place on board Air Europa for years, such as the use of biodegradable materials, waste segregation and sustainable menus.
Measures are also being implemented to improve the efficiency of each flight and to meet the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) strategic objective of reducing total greenhouse gas emissions by 2% per year.
We in the Air Europa team are fully aware of the importance of reaching this milestone that will mark a before and after, and will without a doubt, be the best legacy we can leave to future generations.

Los Molinos, a land on fire

El municipio madrileño de Los Molinos, en el Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama, emula a lugares más conocidos por sus exhibiciones naturales (Jerte, Brihuega, etc…) y pone a 50 kilómetros de la capital de España un espectáculo único en Madrid.
Las más de 790 hectáreas de cambroño (‘Adenocarpus hispanicus’) en Los Molinos son la mayor concentración del mundo, al pie de su montaña más emblemática, La Peñota (1.945 metros). La floración amarilla de este arbusto se contempla desde varios kilómetros, pero es su paseo a pie, bicicleta o caballo, adentrándose en el cambroñal por su red de caminos señalizados, lo que se convierte en una experiencia de color inigualable que habría que ver alguna vez en la vida. Solo la naturaleza, sin intervención del hombre, es capaz de hacer una cosa así.
Durante abril y mayo, el pueblo de Los Molinos nos invita a vivir esta experiencia con el Festival Los Molinos en Amarillo.
The Los Molinos district of Madrid, in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, emulates those places better known for producing such spectacles of nature (Jerte, Brihuega, etc.) and is just 50 kilometres from the Spanish capital, a unique sight in Madrid.
The over 790 hectares of Cambroño (‘Adenocarpus hispanicus’) in Los Molinos are the largest concentration in the world, at the foot of its most emblematic mountain, La Peñota (1,945 metres). You can see the shrub’s yellow blossom from several kilometres away, but it’s when you walk, cycle or horse ride into the cambroñal, through its network of signposted pathways, that you get to truly experience an unparalleled riot of colour that should be seen at least once in a lifetime. On 19 March, the Colosseum in Rome is the starting point of the Rome Marathon, one of the most eagerly awaited events on the sporting calendar, partly because of its route through the Italian capital’s heritage. Although it takes place in the city of the seven hills, it’s a flat course and, as they make their way round, runners will get plenty of support from fans stationed at landmarks like Piazza Navona, St Peter’s Basilica and Piazza Spagna. The Rome marathon is now in its 28th edition and attracts some 10,000 athletes. These groups preserve and promote a historical-artistic heritage that constitutes the largest of the town’s community events.
Its origins date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when, after the Catholic Monarchs took over the city, a new religious order was established that favoured the celebration of Easter. There are sixteen Brotherhoods, which, as confraternities, take to the streets and squares between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. A website and a cutting-edge app, the only one of its kind in Andalusia, show, in real time, the location of each Brotherhood during their penitential procession. This makes it easier for users to go from wherever they are to where the processions are taking place at that time.

Empezó a leer y a descubrir los libros todas las mañanas que su madre le dejaba en una biblioteca antes de irse a trabajar. Desde entonces, Víctor del Árbol (Barcelona, 1968) ha viajado por la vida de otros a través de la literatura: “Para mí, viajar es abrirme a la posibilidad del descubrimiento. Marcharme y en el camino acumular vivencias, sabores, olores, gentes. No importa a dónde vaya, mi mirada siempre es la de un explorador”.

I also enjoy the calm in monasteries like Montserrat, in Barcelona, with its incredible mountains”.

A 25 metros de altura se alza la última obra del estudio de arquitectura holandés Architectuur Maken, que no es ni un edificio ni un puente. Se trata de torre de observación a modo de escalera desde donde se puede ver el paisaje de la localidad de Tilburg. “Su forma triangular hace referencia al histórico herdgang –parque de la ciudad–, donde los pastores cuidaban el ganado”, aseguran. Su forma escultórica provoca que el paisaje cambie según el lado desde el que se mira, y en su construcción se han utilizado el acero y la madera. Estos dos materiales han venido de proveedores locales y garantizan una larga durabilidad y adaptabilidad al entorno. “Es un lugar para que la gente se reúna y se relaje, con una conexión explícita con el paisaje que lo hace más accesible”, cuentan los arquitectos. Ya lo dijo el escritor estadounidense Ed McBain: “El mundo está hecho de escaleras, y hay quien sube y quien baja”.
ENG Standing at 25 metres high, the latest work by Dutch architecture studio Architectuur Maken is neither a building nor a bridge. It’s an observation tower made to look like a staircase from where you can gaze at the landscape across the town of Tilburg. The De Niewe Herdgang staircase designers say that “its triangular shape is a reference to the historic herdgang (the city park) where shepherds once tended livestock”. Its sculptural form changes the landscape according to the side from which it’s viewed and both steel and wood were used to build it. Both materials were sourced from local suppliers and are guaranteed to be long-lasting and adaptable to the environment. “It’s a place for people to gather and relax, with an explicit connection to the landscape, making it more accessible”, the architects say. As Ed McBain once said, “The world is made of stairs, and there are those who go up and those who go down.”

Wenting Kang (Zhuzhou, China, 1987) llegó en 2014 a España, tras formarse en Beijing, Boston o Alemania, y cuando aterrizó en Madrid lo hizo cargada de premios y reconocimientos −el periódico The New York Times dijo que “poseía un oscuro y brillante sonido”−. “Cuando llegué a Madrid, me sorprendió su actividad, la pasión, la amabilidad de la gente y la diversidad. ¡Pensé que sería un lugar muy atractivo para vivir!”, cuenta la que hoy es violista principal de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, en el Teatro Real. Kang disfruta de su nueva ciudad al aire libre: “La Casa de Campo, el zoológico y el acuario, en este gran pulmón de Madrid”. Pero como ciudadana china, da mucha importancia a la comida. “Nací en la provincia de Hunan, y hay en Madrid dos restaurantes de cocina de mi zona, Hunan Restaurant y Chila. The New York Times newspaper said she “had a dark and bright sound”. “When I arrived in Madrid, I was surprised by its activity, the passion, the kindness of the people and its diversity. I thought it would be a very attractive place to live!” says the current principal violist of the Madrid Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro Real.

Their dishes take me right back to my childhood, especially the spicy ones!”. If she feels homesick she knows where to go: “There's a big Chinese community in Madrid and even a large Chinatown in the Usera area”.

Jaime Moreno (Lippstadt, Alemania, 1971) comenzó muy joven en la radio como técnico de sonido y, años después, descubrió la magia del micrófono. Tras un tiempo como coordinador de la cadena musical que solo emite temas en español, ha vuelto a presentar Atrévete, con el objetivo de arrancar la sonrisa a los seguidores del programa y transmitirle la mejor energía desde primera hora de la mañana. Además, es el encargado de dirigir la gala de los Premios Dial, que se celebra el día 16 de marzo en el Recinto Ferial de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, una de las citas de la música en español más importantes, y que, año tras año, reúne a artistas como Pablo López, Vanesa Martín o Antonio Orozco.
Es el encargado de despertar a los oyentes de Cadena Dial. ¿Cómo les ayuda a que afronten el día con buen pie? Cargándome de energía positiva. Cuando comienzo el programa tengo las pilas cargadas al máximo, y según van pasando las horas (son cinco de radio) la batería se va descargando y cuando terminas, estás agotado. Lo único que intentamos es repartir optimismo. Solo contamos cosas buenas. El rato que vayas a estar con nosotros solo vas a oír cosas entretenidas, curiosas, diferentes, además de una gran cantidad de música.
¿A qué hora se levanta? ¿Le cuesta madrugar?
A las cuatro de la mañana. Soy una persona que necesita tomarse las cosas con mucha calma. No me cuesta levantarme. El día que me cueste, será que ya no me divierto haciendo lo que hago. Este es un trabajo en el que nos juntamos nueve personas y hay risas y piques entre nosotros. Es un equipo divertido, con ganas de hacer que los oyentes se lo pasen bien. En estos horarios, cuando vas forzado es cuando ya no lo disfrutas. El día que te levantas y te preguntas si merece la pena, es el momento de dejarlo. Lo principal es que exista confianza y buen rollo entre todo el equipo, que sea algo real para contarlo a los oyentes. Porque si es ficticio, el micrófono lo descubre.
Son dos placeres diferentes. El de la radio, con personas que están empezando el día. Y la gala, con personas que vienen predispuestas a disfrutar. Desde mi puesto de dirección, es el placer de oírlos gritar de emoción. Esa es la recompensa. Y lo bonito de una gala como esta es ver como un equipo tan inmenso de gente (más de cien personas) trabaja en directo y todo va funcionando. Es muy emocionante y divertido.
¿Qué temas no faltan en su playlist para viajar en avión? Son tantos... No controles, de Olé Olé; Espaldas mojadas, de Tam Tam Go, alguna canción de Tino Casal. También me encantan Presuntos Implicados y Manolo García. Por señalar algo más actual, me encanta el pop de Blas Cantó. En su último trabajo tiene una canción, Marte, que me parece fantástica. De Pablo López, mi favorita es Tu enemigo, una canción a la que hay que prestar atención a lo que dice. Y de Vanesa Martín, una artista que me parece que cada vez lo hace mejor, no puedo dejar de escuchar Quien lo diría.
ENG Jaime Moreno (Lippstadt, Germany, 1971) started off in radio at a very young age as a sound technician and years later, he discovered the magic of the microphone. After a stint as coordinator of the music network that only broadcasts songs in Spanish, he’s now back in front of the microphone for Atrevete, aiming to put a smile on his listeners’ faces and send them an energy buzz from first thing in the morning. He’s also in charge of directing the Dial Awards gala, due to be held on 16 March at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Trade Fair complex. This is one of the biggest events on the Spanish music scene, bringing together on stage great artists like Pablo López, Vanesa Martín and Antonio Orozco year after year.
You’re the one responsible for waking up Cadena Dial listeners. How do you help them start their day on the right foot?
By charging myself with positive energy. When I start the programme my batteries are fully charged and as the hours go by (I do five on the radio) they start to run down, so by the time I’ve finished I’m exhausted. All we’re trying to do is spread optimism. We only talk about good things. During the time you spend with us you’ll only hear entertaining, curious, different things, as well as a lot of music.
What time do you get out of bed? Is it tough to wake up early? At four in the morning. I’m someone who needs to take things very calmly. It’s not hard for me to get up. The day it gets too hard, it’ll be because I’m not having fun doing what I do anymore. This is a job where nine of us get together and there’s a lot of laughs and banter between us. It’s a fun team, we’re all keen to make sure the listeners have a good time. With these working hours, if you have to make yourself do it then you’re not enjoying it. The day you wake up and wonder if it’s worth it, that’s the time to quit. The main thing is that there’s trust and good vibes among the whole team, something real to tell our listeners. Because if it’s all an act, the microphone will pick it up.
And from the radio to organising the Dial Awards in Tenerife… How do you tackle the challenge?
They’re two different pleasures. The radio one, with people just starting their day. And the gala, with people who come ready to enjoy themselves. From my director’s spot, it’s the pleasure of hearing them shout with excitement. That’s the reward. And the beauty of a gala like this is seeing how such a huge team of people (more than a hundred) works live and everything goes smoothly. It’s very exciting and great fun.
What topics are never missing from your aircraft travel playlist?
There are so many... No controles by Olé Olé; Espaldas mojadas by Tam Tam Go; a song or two by Tino Casal. I also love Presuntos Implicados and Manolo Garcia. When it comes to something more contemporary, I love Blas Cantó’s pop music. On his latest album he has a song, Marte which I think is fantastic. From Pablo López, my favourite is Tu enemigo, a song where you have to pay attention to what he says. And from Vanesa Martín, an artist who seems to me to be getting better all the time, I can’t stop listening to Quien lo diría.

Cuando los españoles llegaron a México, en los interrogatorios a los nativos, estos les contestaban en maya “Yuk Ak Katan” o “mira lo que dicen”. De este forcejeo de entendimiento durante el colonialismo se adaptó la palabra con la que llamarían a esta península mexicana que hoy recoge los estados de Yucatán, Campeche y Quintana Roo, con Cancún a la cabeza como destino necesario. Un recorrido de norte a sur por esta basta lengua de tierra que divide el golfo de México del mar Caribe, la descubre como un territorio pujante y lleno de sincretismo de civilizaciones.
Mérida es la capital del estado de Yucatán. Aquí el día comienza religiosamente con unos tacos, en el Mercado de Santiago (calle 57, Parque Santiago) los bañan en habanero, ese ají super picante de la región. Es una joya con arquitectura colonial, la única ciudad con trazo y edificios europeos, pues aquí se instalaron los colonizadores. En la actualidad, es la ciudad más segura de México, a dos horas del aeropuerto de Cancún y un camino con más de tres mil cenotes.
Pero la península de Yucatán es conocida por sus pueblos mágicos, la designación otorgada por el gobierno a comunidades que han mantenido sus tradiciones, historia, cultura y arquitectura originales. Otro elemento presente es la cruz de ceiba, el árbol sagrado de los mayas, “ejemplo del encuentro de dos mundos”.
El pueblo mágico de Maní es una suerte de viaje al pasado. Es fácil encontrarse con alguna de las más de 300 mujeres artesanas que trabajan en los talleres de bordado. Son expertas en la técnica x’manikté (“siempreviva” en maya), la más antigua de Yucatán, hoy en peligro de extinción. Su legado se protege tanto como a las abejas meliponas, un insecto pequeñito y sin aguijón cuya miel es un manjar escaso pero con gran valor medicinal y nutricional que se encuentra casi en cada esquina de Maní.

But the Yucatán peninsula is best known for its pueblos mágicos, or magic towns, the designation given by the government to communities that have maintained their original traditions, history, culture and architecture. Valladolid was Mexico’s first.
With a prime location between Mérida and Cancún, artists from all over the region turned its streets into an explosion of colour. It’s the custom here to visit cantinas where you can drink local beers, mezcals and tequilas with their botanas (appetisers), such as sikil pak, a paste of ground pumpkin with tomato, onion, coriander and salt. “Yucatecan cuisine is Mayan or ancestral, it survived the conquest, it is still alive in every community and here is the place where it all converges,” explains Carlos Aguirre Aguilar, President of the Valladolid Restaurant Association. Valladolid is also home to the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, just over two and a half hours from Playa del Carmen or Cancún.
When the Spanish arrived in Mexico they interrogated the natives, who would reply in Mayan “Yuk Ak Katan” or, “I don’t understand your language”. From this struggle to understand each other during colonialism came the word they would eventually use to name the Mexican peninsula, which today includes the states of Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo, with must-see Cancún at the forefront. A journey from north to south along this vast tongue of land that divides the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea shows how it is a thriving territory, replete with the fusion of civilisations.
Mérida is the capital of the state of Yucatán. The day here begins religiously with tacos in the Mercado de Santiago (Calle 57, Parque Santiago) dipped in habanero, the region’s super spicy chilli pepper. As radiantly yellow as the sun, Izamal has lemon-coloured streets and a huge Franciscan convent which, thanks to its great height, can be seen from all directions. Julio Briseño, a native guide, says that 15,000 people live here “very happily” thanks to the excellent quality of life.
Izamal is a colonial city built on the remains of the Mayan civilisation. The Convent of San Antonio de Padua, with its more than 7,000m2, has the second largest atrium after the Vatican. Juan Pablo, a Franciscan friar, explains that when the colonisers arrived “it was not so much a violent encounter as an alliance”. There was a pyramid on the site where it was erected, and the stones that the Mayans had written on are visible. “They also concealed the symbolism of their gods within the walls of the temple, such as frogs, so they could pray to both the new God and to their own hidden gods,” he says. Another important element is the Ceiba cross, the sacred tree of the Mayas, “an example of the meeting of two worlds”.
The magic town of Maní is a sort of journey into the past. It is easy to meet one of the more than 300 craftswomen who work in the embroidery workshops there, experts in the x’manikté (“evergreen” in Mayan) technique, the oldest in Yucatán, now in danger of extinction. Their legacy is protected as much as the melipona bees, tiny, stingless insects whose honey is a rare delicacy, but holds great medicinal and nutritional value and can be found in almost every corner of Maní.

los pintores paisajistas, el lago Obersee, tal vez el lugar más puro de Europa o la Eiskapelle, una gruta de hielo abovedada que se adentra en el monte Watzmann.
También en las entrañas de la tierra están las minas de sal de Berchtesgaden, con más de 500 siglos de existencia y todavía en plena actividad (22,50€, adultos; 11,50€, niños hasta 16 años). Para visitarlas sin reparos, hay que vestirse para la ocasión con un mono de trabajo que ellos mismos proporcionan. Y de ahí, previo paso por el fotomatón, a una vagoneta que recorre un túnel estrecho que lleva al corazón de la mina, donde esperan actividades como descensos en tobogán o un paseo en balsa por el lago subterráneo.
Y de las entrañas de la tierra, a la perspectiva de las cumbres. Uno de los puntos más altos y de visita obligada es el popular Nido del Águila, en la montaña Kehlsein a 1.834 metros de altura, donde se encuentra el antiguo chalé que la cúpula del partido nazi regaló a Hitler en su 50 cumpleaños. Llegar hasta aquí no es fácil: por una empinada carretera (hay tramos con más de un 20% de desnivel), un autobús especial sube a los visitantes a una plataforma de observación, de donde sale un túnel de 124 metros que lleva hasta un elevador (el mismo que utilizó Hitler) que sube hasta la casa (a partir de 28,60€, adultos).
Otra forma de conocer esta zona la proporcionan los teleféricos de las estaciones de esquí que, desde la primavera, se convierten en el punto de salida y llegada de las rutas senderistas y de ciclismo de montaña. El de Obersalzberg (desde 9€ el trayecto) conduce hasta el punto de partida de los autobuses que suben al Nido del Águila y al Centro de Documentación (lugar para conocer a fondo la historia nazi, cuya reapertura está prevista para el próximo otoño). También el teleférico de Jennerbahn (30€, ida y vuelta) te ofrece la vista más increíble del lago Königsee. Y es que da igual el ángulo desde el que se mire, Berchtesgaden siempre ofrece su mejor paisaje.

To visit this part of the Alps between Munich and Salzburg, especially with the arrival of spring, is to find yourself in a changing environment, with the white blanket of snow giving way to the first shoots of green. This is the perfect time to take the ferry across the emerald waters of Lake Königsee and admire the reflection of the red-roofed domes of St. Bartholomä Church (return ticket costs €22). Or to take a walk along the surrounding trails and discover fantastic sights such as the Malerwinkel viewpoint, a favourite spot for landscape painters, Lake Obersee, perhaps the purest place in Europe, or the Eiskapelle, a vaulted ice grotto that cuts into the Watzmann mountain.
Deep in the bowels of the earth you can also find the Berchtesgaden salt mines, more than 500 centuries old but still fully operational (€22.50, adults; €11.50, children under 16). To visit the mines properly, you need to dress for the occasion in overalls provided by the miners themselves. After a quick stop at the photo booth, you can then take a wagon through a narrow tunnel into the heart of the mine, where activities such as tobogganing or a raft ride on the underground lake await.
From the bowels of the earth to the view from the peaks. One of the highest points and a true must-see is the famous Eagle’s Nest on Kehlsein Mountain - at 1,834 metres above sea level, this is the location of the chalet given to Hitler by the Nazi party leadership on his 50th birthday. Getting here isn’t easy: a special bus takes visitors up a steep road (some sections have a gradient of over 20%) to a viewing platform, from which a 124-metre tunnel leads to an elevator (the same one used by Hitler) that takes visitors up to the house (from €28.60, adults).
Another way to get to know the area is by taking the cable cars from the ski resorts, which, from springtime onwards, are the starting and finishing points for hiking and mountain biking trails. The Obersalzberg cable car (from €9 each way) takes you to the starting point of the buses that go up to the Eagle’s Nest and the Documentation Centre (a place to learn about Nazi history, due to re-open next autumn). Meanwhile, the Jennerbahn (€30 return) has the most stunning views of Lake Königsee. No matter what angle you look at it from, Berchtesgaden is always spectacular.

Air Europa returns to Athens and Alghero in summer
Air Europa afronta el verano con la reanudación de sus rutas a Atenas y Alguero. Estas serán operadas con su flota Boeing 737 que, con capacidad para 178 pasajeros, destaca por la eficiencia en su rendimiento.
La aerolínea unirá Madrid con la capital griega con cuatro vuelos semanales y con la ciudad medieval de Alguero, en Cerdeña, con dos frecuencias a la semana, ofreciendo además a los pasajeros que lleguen a Madrid desde ambos destinos una rápida y cómoda conexión con otras 33 ciudades europeas y españolas y con 23 destinos de EE UU y Latinoamérica.

The airline will be connecting Madrid to the Greek capital with four flights a week, and to the medieval city of Alghero, in Sardinia, twice weekly, offering passengers arriving in Madrid from both destinations a fast and convenient connection to 33 other European and Spanish cities, as well as to 23 destinations in the USA and Latin America.
The first flight to Athens will take off on 19th June at 21.45h and will be operating every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday until mid-September. A month later, at the beginning of July, Air Europa will resume its route to Alghero, flying there every Thursday and Saturday until the beginning of September. The flight to Sardinia will take off from Madrid at 23.10 hours.
