Welcome to the Winter edition of our Quarterly Business Magazine
There have been a number of key announcements from the government since our last magazine landed with you with the Employment Rights Bill and the eagerly anticipated Autumn Budget outlining significant changes for businesses.
The Employment Rights Bill introduces vast changes that will impact businesses of all shapes and sizes and we have been working closely with colleagues at the British Chambers of Commerce to pass on your views for the consultation stage of the bill.
The Autumn Budget was one of the most anticipated in recent history and brought with it many changes that will be challenging for businesses going forward. However, the Chancellor has offered some hope by pledging a future path toward economic stability.
You can view our reaction to these announcements on pg4 of the magazine and please send any of your views to us via info@wcnwchamber.org.uk.
It was brilliant to see so many people at our Annual Ball & Recognition Awards on 15th November to celebrate the successes of the last year. Thank you to everyone who made it a fantastic occasion and you can read more about the night and find out the winners on pgs 26-29.
Following on from the success of the Ynys Môn Network event on 8th October, the next 12 months are set to be exciting for the Chamber. We have plans for new events, more collaboration with our partners, better networking and we’re making sure we support you, our members, and the challenges you face even more effectively – so watch this space!
With the festive season soon upon us, I wish you and your family all the best over the break and we look forward to continuing to support you throughout 2025. A challenging budget for businesses
Reacting to the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget, Sarah Bailey, CEO at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, said:
“This is a challenging budget for businesses across North Wales and West Cheshire, but the Chancellor has offered some hope by pledging a future path toward economic stability.
“While the measures to support smaller firms are welcome, the increase in employer National Insurance Contributions will still add financial strain.
Coupled with a 6.7% rise in the National Living Wage, many companies in the region could find it harder to invest and recruit in the immediate future.
“However, the Chancellor has attempted to balance this initial impact by laying out a longer-term framework aimed at economic stability. Plans to boost infrastructure spending, offer targeted business rates relief, and provide additional support for small enterprises will help cushion the tax increases. It’s also positive to see the permanent
establishment of full expensing, the annual investment allowance, and R&D relief, which will support growth and innovation.
“But much now depends on the government’s next steps. The benefits described by the Chancellor are not guaranteed and will rely on the effectiveness of industrial and trade strategies, as well as robust devolution and targeted public infrastructure investment to energize regional supply chains.
“To foster confidence among North Wales and West Cheshire businesses, swift, decisive, and inclusive action is essential to unlock the investments that our economy urgently needs.”
You can view a breakdown of the announcements in the Budget and the wins from the BCC Network on the Chamber website.
Employment reform must work for business
The UK Government has revealed its Employment Rights Bill which marks the biggest shake-up of employment law in decades.
Responding to the announcement, Sarah Bailey, CEO at the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce commented:
“The Employment Rights Bill sets out vast changes that will impact businesses of all shapes and sizes. It is imperative that employers are engaged and supported through this every step of the way.
“There is potential to get more people into work and boost economic growth, as long as the right balance is struck. If the process is mishandled, there is a danger these changes could have the opposite effect.
“It is important to stress that the legislation we are seeing today is a starting point. The framework is being established with the details and mechanics of how this will operate still needing much further consultation.
“Many of these changes are going to need secondary legislation and it’s unlikely we’ll see major changes to business practices until 2026.
“Firms will want to see more detail on the timeline for these reforms and guarantees that there will be no surprises.
“We all recognise that a thriving workforce is more productive and that drives growth. We will continue to work with Government and the unions to ensure that a balance is reached. One that encourages businesses to recruit and has the right support for employees.”
“We are keen to hear the thoughts of businesses from the region on the Employment Rights Bill and please get in touch on 01244 669988 or email info@wcnwchamber.org.uk”
What changes are included in the Employment Rights Bill?
• Employees can claim unfair dismissal from day one in their job which is a big change from the current two-year qualifying period. Employers will be able to operate probation periods.
• Parental and bereavement leave to be introduced from day one, currently have to be with the company for more than a year.
• End zero-hour contracts.
• End practices of fire and rehire and fire and replace.
• Make flexible working the “default” unless employers can prove it is “unreasonable”.
• Strengthened protections for new mothers, making it unlawful to dismiss a woman who has had a baby for six months after her return to work (this excludes specific circumstances).
• Establish a new Fair Work Agency with new powers to enforce holiday pay.
• Statutory sick pay – removing the lower earnings limit to make it available to all workers, as well as removing the threeday waiting period.
Niamh Kelly, Director of The HR Dept Wrexham and Chester and Strategic Partner of the Chamber of Commerce, commented:
“We welcome the introduction of the new bill as we recognise the intent to support employers to operate in a nonexploitative and ethical way.
“However, greater protection for employees needs to go hand in hand with the ability of a business to focus on their economic growth and it will be important to study the detail of the Bill.
“The more complicated and restrictive the legislation, the more difficult it will be for SME’s in particular, to interpret and implement. ‘Codes of practice’ only go so far in helping employers grapple with significant changes in employment law!"

One of our community assets we’re proudest of is Blacon Adventure Playground, which has welcomed generations of Blacon residents through its doors for more than 50 years.
We’re delighted that the benefit the playground delivers for the community in Blacon has been recognised with two prestigious awards.
The first of these saw the playground and our hard-working staff and volunteers presented with a BBC Merseyside ‘Make a Difference’ Award.
These awards aim to say thank you to the people and organisations who love to make life better for others.
The playground, known locally as ‘The Venny’, was named the winner in the ‘Green’ category, with judges highlighting its community impact and hands-on educational work.
The Venny was then recognised again at the recent Dee 106.3 Local Heroes Awards, where it was named Business of The Year.

The site is also home to a state-of-theart community gym run by Rage Fitness & Wellbeing Group, which delivers wellbeing services across Cheshire and beyond.

Seventy per cent of UK financial leaders halted investments, awaiting Autumn Budget clarity
New research reveals marked increase in technology investment, while employee wellbeing and ESG initiatives face harshest cuts.
New research reveals that nearly all financial leaders (90%) have been impacted by Budget uncertainty in 2024, and over two-thirds (70%) delayed or cancelled planned investments awaiting clarity from the Autumn Budget.
The research, which surveyed 400 UK financial decision makers, and was commissioned by payments solutions provider Equals Money, highlighted a clear focus on increasing investment in technology, with 63% of businesses prioritising this area in 2024.
Top five priorities for managing business expenses in 2025:
• Improving operational efficiency (26%)
• Controlling costs (25%)
• Leveraging AI (22%)
• Investing in technology & innovation (22%)
• Managing cashflow (21%)
Steve Paul, Deputy CFO at Equals Money, commented, “Managing business spend is complex at the best of times, but when you throw in a new Government and an uncertain market, it only heightens the challenge. With the right tools in place,
such as currency hedging, financial leaders can still make smart and safe investments. The research, however, highlights that too few companies are utilising the data available to them to help in this decision-making.”
Despite the fact that data and financial insight are considered either critical for all decisions (30%) or used regularly in company decision making (58%), only 45% currently use budgeting and forecasting software, and 26% still rely on manual tracking methods.
However, there is a clear shift on the horizon, with 81% of companies planning to either adopt new or upgrade existing financial tools or software to better manage business spending and improve financial visibility.
Steve Paul continued, “Financial tools don’t just help your accountancy department, they can add value across the entire business. By sorting back-office functions and providing better budget clarity, financial leaders can offer more strategic consultancy across companywide investment decisions.”
Chamber members partnership grows
Sales Geek North Wales (Strategic Member) and PR Lift Equipment's (Member) partnership goes from strength the strength. The businesses met each other nearly three years ago at a Start-Up Club event in Conwy. Like many other businesses, they were taking advantage of the support the Chamber offered in helping new business owners gain the confidence they need to get up and running.
Fast forward three years and both businesses have seen significant growth separately and in partnership with one another. Sales Geek North Wales supported PR Lift Equipment with strategic planning for sales revenue growth which identified that a business development manager was required to help generate stronger partnerships with customers to support long-term growth. Not only have there been new hires, but there are also plans for the next financial year to add product lines to PR's offerings and then there is potentially exciting
news (top secret for the moment!) on the horizon.
Lee-Roy Rushforth, Sales Director and joint owner at PR Lift Equipment, said, "It's rewarding and surreal to think that in the space of a few years, with the support of Aaron, we have grown so much personally and professionally. Having started the business during Covid lockdowns, we weren't sure what to expect for the future and here we are with new team members and further growth plans thanks to the support
provided by Aaron and the hard work and commitment from myself and Andrew to support our customers."
Aaron Sussex, Sales Geek North Wales, said, "Without the support of the Chamber we potentially would never have met! Working alongside both LeeRoy and Andy has been a pleasure and seeing them develop has been a joy to be a part of!"
Tips for business success in 2025
With the Autumn Budget throwing a number of challenges at businesses, there has never been a more crucial time to plan appropriately for 2025, by setting realistic goals and ensuring that measures are put in place to achieve these. And, for the team at Chester-based invoice finance and back-office specialists, Zodeq, the end of each year is an exciting time as they support clients to do just this.
So, what does Zodeq recommend for clients looking to achieve business success in 2025?
Understand your finance options
Having adequate working capital is the driving force behind business efficiency and growth, and often this will come from business finance. There are countless options available, whether it is a business overdraft or loan, asset finance or invoice finance. Ensure this is a success by identifying the appropriate type of finance for your business needs in 2025.
Build a happy workforce
A happy team is arguably the most crucial factor in business success, with many strategies to achieve it. From flexible work arrangements and training investments to streamlined processes, social events, and bonuses;
each approach shares a common goal, to build a motivated and satisfied workforce.
Have the right support in place
Certain functions within a business are essential to success but can be highly time-consuming. Tasks like invoicing, payroll, credit control, HMRC admin, and other back-office duties are crucial to operations but can weigh heavily on business owners and managers, diverting attention from core activities. Outsourcing these functions can help free up internal resources, allowing you to focus on running and growing your business.

Navigating the new employment law landscape: essential guidance for SMEs
The Government recently introduced a raft of employment law changes that would have alarmed even the most HR-savvy of SME leaders. They include sweeping changes to workers’ rights, with the alterations unveiled on October 10 set to impact businesses of all sizes.
One fundamental shift is the creation of the Fair Work Agency, a unified enforcement body that will oversee areas such as fair pay, worker protections, and zero-hour contracts, placing additional scrutiny on employment practices. For SMEs, this could mean adapting contracts and wage practices to align with stricter regulatory standards. The changes also include zero-hour contract reforms, eliminating ‘onesided flexibility’, which has historically favoured employers by allowing lastminute scheduling changes. Under the new rules, workers gain more stability and predictability in a change requiring SMEs to adjust workforce planning, and potentially increase staffing costs to maintain flexibility.

Legat Owen celebrate 20 years in Albion House, Chester
This November marked Legat Owen’s 20th anniversary in Albion House, Chester.
Legat Owen is an established firm of chartered surveyors founded in Chester in 1986. Over the following years, the practice steadily expanded, outgrowing their initial premises on Goss Street to move to Castle Street in around 1989.
In 2004, Legat Owen made the significant decision to move their offices to Albion House. A series of extensive building works and renovations were carried out in 2007 to ensure the office space was perfectly suited to their needs.
Albion House has an amazing history. Originally, it was part of Park House located on Lower Bridge Street, built around 1717 as a classic early Georgina town house. In 1818 it was converted into the Albion Hotel and ballroom.
The new law to prevent workplace harassment, expected to take effect under amendments to the Equality Act, will require employers to proactively address and prevent workplace harassment, particularly sexual harassment. Employers should be warned that non-compliance could lead to compensation claims, reputational harm, and whistleblowing incidents, particularly if harassment policies, reporting mechanisms, and training are inadequate.
The reforms also introduce ‘day one’ rights - granting employees immediate protections such as sick pay and parental leave, with the need for businesses to provide formal reasons for any dismissal, subject to a probation period. All of this
means leaders will need robust policies to manage requests and meet new regulatory standards.
Businesses should prepare now to stay ahead of these changes. Start by updating employment contracts, particularly for zero-hour workers, to meet new rules on flexibility and fair pay. Implement anti-harassment policies, set up reporting channels, and train staff.
Given the complexity and potential legal repercussions of these changes, seeking expert employment law advice is essential. Professional guidance not only ensures compliance - it protects businesses by fostering a fair, legally sound workplace in a rapidly evolving legal environment.
The ballroom at the Albion Hotel, today known as Albion House and Legat Owen's offices, was the largest in Chester during its time. The original vaulted alcotrave ceiling remains resplendent in its glory above the office and the original sprung dancefloor still exists beneath the carpet.
In the late 1960’s, Albion House became a dancehall known as Clockwork Orange. Many of Legat Owen’s clients have mentioned that this was the best dance floor in Chester where all the great bands would play including Status Quo and the Bee Gees!
In 2015, Legat Owen expanded further with the acquisition of Nantwich-based Lamont Commercial, strengthening their core business.
Matthew Pochin, Director, Legat Owen commented:
“Legat Owen has an extensive client base spanning the UK yet remains incredibly proud of Chester and passionate about our work in the City. Over the years we have been involved in a number of high-profile projects in Chester, notably, the development of Chester Business Park from conception to our ongoing agency and management roles today; the development of the Greyhound Retail Park; the acquisition of County Hall on behalf of Chester University and simultaneous disposal of the HQ building.”
Legat Owen look forward to their next milestone in 2026 when they will celebrate their 40th Birthday!

Launch of brand-new Ynys Môn Network a huge success!
In October, the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce were delighted to launch their brand-new Ynys Môn Network, a business-tobusiness networking event, in collaboration with Angleseybased social enterprise, Menter Môn, at Menai Science Park (M-SParc).
Demand for the first event took off with the initial allocation of tickets selling out within days. This highlighted local businesses' need for a platform that provides opportunities to come together, build connections and network
with fellow business professionals from Anglesey and beyond.
The network also provided an opportunity for attendees to find out more about the support available to them as Sarah Bailey, Chief Executive Officer of West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce, and Bethan Fraser-Williams, Projects Director at Menter Môn, gave brilliant speeches, outlining the plethora of support provided by both organisations.
Commenting following the launch, Sarah Bailey, said:
“It was fantastic to see the demand for the first meeting of the Ynys Môn Network. This inaugural event allowed us to extend our reach in North Wales
and continue our mission to support businesses across the entire region.
Sarah continued: “Seeing the success of the first meeting was extremely encouraging and we now look forward to building upon this by delivering future networking and support opportunities for business in Anglesey and beyond!”
Sara Lois Roberts, Project Manager at the Menter Môn Enterprise Hub added:
“Menter Môn were delighted to work with West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce to launch the Ynys Môn Network. Collaborating for this network allows us to add value as part of our business support services, along with supply chain opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, food, and digital.”

Their Supported Employment Service and Employment Directions Service are designed to connect local employers with residents seeking work—providing free, time unlimited, tailored, support to meet business's diversity and inclusion goals.
Why diversity matters for your business
There’s a compelling business case for diversifying your workforce. Companies that embrace diversity are already seeing the benefits, including: Increased employee motivation: A diverse workforce is often more engaged and committed to the company’s success.
Improved morale and teamwork: A mix of perspectives fosters collaboration and strengthens team dynamics.
Enhanced reputation: Companies that value diversity are viewed more favourably by employees, customers, and the community.
Innovation: Diverse teams bring fresh ideas, leading to innovation in products, services, and processes.
Corporate social responsibility: A commitment to diversity showcases your company’s social responsibility and ethical values.
Saving you time and money
Diversity in the workplace isn’t just about doing the right thing—it’s also a smart business strategy that can save you time and money:
A broader talent pool:
Many individuals with disabilities are eager to work but are often overlooked in traditional recruitment efforts. By diversifying your hiring practices, you’ll access untapped talent pools with valuable skills and experience.
Reputation benefits: Today’s consumers and job seekers are increasingly focused on corporate ethics. By implementing inclusive policies, your company will stand out as a responsible employer that not only talks the talk but walks the walk. This reputation can help attract top talent and loyal customers, giving your business a competitive edge.
Reduced recruitment costs: A diverse and inclusive workplace leads to higher employee satisfaction and retention. With improved morale and reduced turnover, you’ll save time and money on recruitment and training.
The Supported Employment Service and Employment Directions Service provided by Cheshire West & Chester Council are both dedicated to helping businesses build and sustain diverse, inclusive workplaces. Their support begins with making recruitment processes accessible and inclusive, ensuring organizations attract candidates from the broadest talent pool.
The service then assists in identifying the right talent by matching candidates' skills, abilities, and aspirations with job requirements, ensuring a strong fit for both the employee and the organization. Their involvement doesn’t end with recruitment; they provide continuous training and support to help teams work effectively alongside colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Additionally, they offer guidance on implementing reasonable workplace adjustments, ensuring that all staff have an equal opportunity to succeed.
Their in-work support extends to onboarding, with tailored induction and training to smoothly integrate new hires into teams.
Finally, they assist with supporting employees returning to work after longterm sickness, helping improve their wellbeing while reducing absenteeism and turnover costs.

Chester International School students benefit from mock interview experience
Year 12 students from Chester International School recently had the chance to develop valuable employability skills by participating in mock interviews with Young Chamber Sponsors during a special event held at the Handbridge-based school on 11th November.
In preparation, students were tasked with applying for a specific role and preparing for a mock interview tailored to that job. The students engaged in 10-minute interviews, during which interviewers referenced the provided job descriptions to allow the students to experience as close to a real hiring process as possible. This experience gave students an insight into what employers look for when recruiting new and inexperienced staff. The mock interview day was another successful event made possible by the Young Chamber programme. Through events like this, along with CV-building workshops, careers talks, and enterprise projects, the programme continues to support students in preparing for life beyond education.
Head of Careers at Chester International School, Abbey Peers, said after the event: “The Year 12 Mock Interviews at Chester International School were a success once again. The students were supported by businesspeople from the local community to practice interview skills and get personalised written feedback about their performance and CV. One Year 12 student said it was 'a fun activity that was very helpful to improve skills in a job interview, social skills, preparation and business in general'. Another said it 'made me feel more prepared for future interviews'. We are excited to work with the Young Chamber programme to run the day again in the future."

IT Support or No IT Support: Evaluating the risks and benefits
In today’s technologydriven world, businesses rely heavily on IT systems to stay operational and competitive. However, a common dilemma for many organisations, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), is whether to invest in professional IT support or to manage their IT needs in-house. While having dedicated IT support offers peace of mind, cutting costs by going without it can be tempting. This article, by E2E, explores the risks and benefits of having IT support versus not having it, to help you make an informed decision.
The benefits of having IT Support
1. Expertise and specialisation
• IT support teams bring professional expertise that ensures systems are maintained effectively and issues are resolved quickly.
• They are up to date with the latest technologies, security threats, and solutions, giving your business a competitive edge.
2.Minimised downtime
• System failures can lead to operational downtime, costing businesses both money and productivity.
• Professional IT support offers proactive maintenance and swift issue resolution, minimising disruptions.
3. Enhanced security
• With cybercrime on the rise, robust security measures are essential.
• IT support can implement advanced security protocols, monitor for breaches, and ensure compliance with regulations like GDPR.
4. Scalability and growth
• IT needs to change as businesses grow.
• IT support providers can offer scalable solutions to match your evolving requirements, from cloud migration to network expansion.
5. Cost predictability
• Managed IT support services often operate on a subscription model, giving predictable monthly costs.
• This prevents unexpected expenses associated with emergencies or significant upgrades.
The risks of having IT support
1. Cost implications
• Professional IT support services can be expensive, especially for smaller businesses.
• The perceived high cost can deter organisations from investing in such services.
2. Over-reliance
• Businesses may become overly dependent on IT providers, potentially slowing decision-making processes.
• A lack of in-house IT knowledge can make the organisation vulnerable if the support provider is unavailable.
3. Misaligned expectations
• Poor communication or unclear agreements with IT support providers can lead to dissatisfaction.
• It's essential to have clear service-level agreements (SLAs) to ensure expectations are met.
The benefits of not having IT support
1. Cost savings
• Eliminating IT support reduces immediate overheads, which can be appealing for startups or businesses with tight budgets.
2. Increased control
• Some businesses prefer to keep all IT operations in-house for greater control and autonomy.
• This may work if the organisation has staff with sufficient technical skills.
3. Simplified processes
• Businesses with minimal IT infrastructure may find external support unnecessary.
• For example, small organisations relying solely on basic services may manage without dedicated support.
The risks of not having IT support
4. Increased vulnerability
• Without dedicated IT support, businesses are more susceptible to data breaches and malware attacks.
• Unpatched systems or poorly configured networks can leave significant security gaps.
5. Prolonged downtime
• When IT issues arise, untrained staff may struggle to diagnose and resolve them.
• This can lead to extended downtime and frustrated customers or employees.
6. Hidden costs
• While avoiding IT support might seem like a cost-saving measure, unexpected IT failures can result in expensive repairs or lost business opportunities.
• Recovery from a serious cyberattack could cost thousands in fines, data recovery, and reputation management.
7. Missed opportunities for innovation
• Without expert guidance, businesses may fail to adopt innovative solutions that could streamline processes or improve services.
• Competitors with dedicated IT support are likely to outpace businesses that lag behind technologically.
8. Employee productivity
• Employees often lack the training to manage complex IT issues, which can distract them from their primary responsibilities.
• This inefficiency can lead to frustration and decreased morale.
Conclusion
Deciding between IT support and no IT support depends on your organisation’s size, resources, and IT reliance. For businesses heavily reliant on technology, IT support is more of a necessity than a luxury, offering protection, scalability, and peace of mind. However, for smaller organisations with limited IT needs, the decision to forgo professional IT support might seem reasonable, provided they recognise and mitigate the associated risks.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to balancing cost with the potential risks and benefits. A middle ground for some businesses could be outsourcing IT support on an as-needed basis, ensuring critical issues are handled by professionals without incurring ongoing costs. Whichever route you take, understanding your IT needs and planning for contingencies will be vital for your organisation’s success in an increasingly digital world.

Cheshire College Higher Education
students graduate at Chester Cathedral
Students from Cheshire College – South & West celebrated the successful completion of their higher education courses on Wednesday 23rd October, as they attended their formal graduation ceremony at Chester’s beautiful 16th century Cathedral.
The students had all studied at Crewe, Ellesmere Port or Chester Campus and were graduating in subject areas as varied as computing, engineering, performing arts and people management.
The courses offered at Cheshire College are developed with a focus on local skill priorities so that the training meets the current and future needs of employers in the region. Many of the graduates have undertaken their higher technical studies to improve their employment prospects or to advance their careers in companies that they already work for. Amongst the cohort were higher-level apprentices who combined their studies with working in the engineering industry for employers such as Bentley, National Gas and Trac Precision Solutions.
Friends and family joined the students to mark the occasion with canapés and drinks provided by the College’s Hospitality & Catering students, live music from H Sanson and Hollie Edgeley and inspirational words from guest speaker Alex Stanniforth,
Elliott Oliver, who graduated in Engineering (Manufacturing) Higher National Certificate Level 4 from the College’s Crewe Campus was keen to share his thoughts about coming back to College as an adult: “I am really proud of myself for sticking at it for 2 years especially after so long out of education, this course will help me progress at my workplace, from shop floor level to a management level”.
Graduating from the Ellesmere Port Campus with a degree in Performing Arts (Acting) Higher National Diploma Level 5, Cristian Matyus added: “It feels unreal to be graduating today, this experience at Cheshire College has made me more confident; I am hoping to get into dramatherapy, and the course has been really helpful”.
Director for Higher Technical Education, Lynne Rowland, said that the graduation ceremony had been both emotional and celebratory: “We are enormously proud of our Higher Education students, and although we’re sad to see them go, we know they will achieve every success as they go forward with their new careers. “We have invested heavily in resources and facilities for Higher Education students over the years, because we are passionate about ensuring our HE students get quality education, first-
class facilities and bespoke teaching whilst they’re studying with us. And it’s wonderful to hear how grateful today’s students are, and how much they value Cheshire College’s contribution to their education.”
Whether students are progressing from a Level 3 course at Cheshire College, returning to education as a mature student, changing careers or wishing to enhance their current career opportunities, Cheshire College offers a range of Higher Education qualifications to support its students’ journeys.
These include, but are not limited to, Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) as well as a range of professional qualifications. Cheshire College is the lead education provider in the Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology. The Institute is a collaboration between further education providers and employers to enhance the higher technical skills of people across the region. The College will be unveiling a two-storey state-of-the-art facility in summer 2025, which will be used to enhance delivery of higher education courses at the Crewe Campus.
Cheshire College is now accepting Higher Education applications for 2025/26. Applicants can explore courses or apply at www.ccsw.ac.uk.
Local butcher beefs up operations with Smart Technology
A Llangefni-based butcher has embraced new technology to boost their business thanks to support from the Enterprise Hub (Hwb Menter).
J Thomas is a traditional family butcher based in the Anglesey market town and is run by partners David Roberts and Christopher Taylor. They supply local Welsh meat to the public and many of the island’s cafés and restaurants. Recently, the business received a grant from Menter Môn’s Enterprise Hub, aimed at making the most of technology to improve business performance. The Enterprise Hub supports existing businesses to grow and provides entrepreneurs with the guidance and space to successfully put new ideas into practice. David and Christopher worked closely with Smart Towns Senior Project Officer at Menter Môn, Rhian Hughes, and technology experts, Sensibility to find a solution to help them improve food safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
As a result, humidity and temperature sensors were installed in the shop’s refrigerators, giving the owners peace of mind that expensive stock is kept safe. The technology includes a LoRaWAN gateway which allows sensors to transmit important data, including when temperatures become too high
or too low. Alerts are then sent to the business owners via WhatsApp and email, allowing them to respond immediately. David explained: “We can now record temperatures automatically and save data electronically. This will save staff time and effort storing temperature records for food inspections. We are an incredibly busy shop so we are always looking for ways to use our time more efficiently.”
Working with Smart Towns experts, J Thomas has used technology to their advantage, letting them focus on their strengths of serving up prime cuts and promoting their business. This approach doesn’t just streamline operations, it also helps reduce waste, saving money on products that might otherwise end up in the bin.
In May this year, the business raised the stakes, purchasing a £5,000 meat ageing refrigerator. They dry age beef for 28 days, storing stock worth hundreds of pounds at a time.
“Having one of the sensors in this equipment relieves us of any concerns when we leave the shop overnight and especially at weekends when we close on a Saturday until Monday morning” explained David.
Reputation is also important to the business, David adds: “We believe
that customers are more likely to trust a butcher shop that demonstrates a commitment to food safety through the use of modern monitoring technologies”. By maintaining consistent temperatures, the shop can ensure the quality and freshness of its products, leading to higher customer satisfaction and better regulatory compliance.
Rhian Hughes, of Menter Môn, said: “We are always keen to work with local businesses to help them develop and improve efficiency. Businesses keen to find out how they can benefit from Smart Towns technology should get in touch with us and I would encourage them to register to access free advice and resources, including a high street data audit.”
The Enterprise Hub (Hwb Menter) is partfunded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund via Cyngor Gwynedd and the Isle of Anglesey County Council. It is also part-funded by Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
Smart Towns Cymru is a Welsh Government funded programme of support helping councils, communities and businesses use technology and data to regenerate towns in line with the Transforming Towns agenda.
“We can now record temperatures automatically and save data electronically. This will save staff time and effort storing temperature records for food inspections. We are an incredibly busy shop so we are always looking for ways to use our time more efficiently.”
Karen Jones Business Development Manager
Neatcrown Corwen Limited
To begin, tell us a little about yourself and your background.
I grew up in Connah’s Quay and attended Ysgol Maes Garmon secondary school in Mold and although I spoke English at home, I was taught through the medium of Welsh. It was a steep learning curve, but I feel privileged now that I was given the opportunity to learn to speak Welsh fluently and learn about the culture. I moved to Ruthin, Denbighshire after having my second child in 2000 and I enjoy the rural lifestyle.
I started working in laboratories at the age of 18 and studied Chemistry on day-release basis over several years. I’ve worked with some excellent employers in the area of chemical manufacturing with my area of expertise being in formulation and new product development. I have always been supported to continue my professional development, working up to senior management level.
Following on from studying chemistry, I attended many leadership and management courses, including a postgrad in Coaching and Mentoring. I have been a mentor for the Royal Society of Chemistry, working with women in similar roles. I coach on a part-time basis, with a particular interest in leadership and management, sustainability and the environment, as well as workplace wellbeing.
: What attracted you to the company?
Having worked successfully with my previous company for 14 years, growing the laboratory team and building on my leadership and management skills, I felt ready for a new challenge in 2018 when my role was changing due to restructuring within the organisation. I began to explore opportunities where I could utilise my skills and experience.
I was offered a role as Business Development Manager at Neatcrown, a family-owned Contract Manufacturing company, based in Corwen. I had been aware of Neatcrown, previously Phostrogen Ltd, as it has been manufacturing leading garden care products at the current site for many years, so there were many synergies with my own experiences within the manufacture of agricultural products.
I have enjoyed working within SMEs in the past, wearing many hats and experiencing many different aspects of the business. On visiting the site and meeting the team, I could see the potential for growth and I felt there was an opportunity to have an impact in shaping the company strategy. I was keen to be part of it as it aligned with my own values and was an opportunity to utilise my skills and expertise whilst learning the new skills needed for Business Development.
What are your main responsibilities?
Neatcrown’s strategy to reduce dependency on a single customer and achieve diversity of customers and sectors began in 2017. My main responsibility when I joined the company in 2019 was to increase the customer base and help the business diversify into supplying into different sectors, particularly the agriculture sector.
As Business Development Manager, I explore and follow up on business opportunitie whilst liaising with prospective customers and building relationships with current customers. I evaluate new leads and opportunities to determine if they are a good fit for Neatcrown and if we would be a suitable manufacturing partner to fulfil their manufacturing requirements.
I keep up to date with current market trends, initiatives and regulations within the sectors that we work in, ensuring we can support our customers with the changing landscapes and offer solutions where necessary. I assess the company’s marketing needs, working on any literature, social media and exhibitions to increase visibility and attract new business, as well as working closely with the factory to onboard new customers and advise on any new enquiries.
WCNW: Who is your target audience and what is the main aim of the organisation?
We are a contract manufacturing business, offering manufacturing and filling solutions to some of the leading brands within the home and garden and agriculture sectors.
We work with a wide range of organisations, co-manufacturing their products, packaging them and helping them to develop their own product ranges. We also supply to distributors and companies who have their own brands. The main aim of the organisation is to produce high-quality products, safely and efficiently, whilst building trusting relationships with our customers who are outsourcing their manufacturing.
WCNW: How have things gone so far?
We have continued to grow our customer base within horticulture and agriculture, and today are working closely with industry leaders and innovators developing and manufacturing agricultural products for sustainable crop production. The growth has been managed in a way in which we continue to provide the quality service we promised we would.
WCNW: Any difficulties? If so, how did you overcome them?
As a manufacturer, we have faced many challenges over the last few years. COVID-19, Brexit, the Ukraine conflict and the cost-of-living crisis, which has meant that we have had to remain flexible and agile to the many uncertainties. With the challenges that emerged in 2020, Neatcrown very quickly diversified, but not in the way we had intended, we switched to manufacturing and supplying disinfectants to manage the increased demand throughout the pandemic. The home and garden sector were not requiring stocks, as garden centres closed overnight and consumers bought only the essentials.
Although this impacted the rate at which the strategy to enter into agricultural product manufacture was realised, we continued to increase visibility and connections with prospective customers within this sector.
With a continued focus towards the manufacture and formulation of products within the agriculture sector, we were making great strides towards increasing our customer base. With the additional challenges and uncertainties
facing the industry, with short supply of raw materials and pricing volatility, customers were more heavily reliant on delivering uninterrupted supplies of manufactured products. This resulted in them being open to reducing the risk on their own supply chain and bolstering their manufacturing capacity.
Neatcrown showed its flexible and reactive approach during these challenges, keeping the business operational as well as building up partnerships across the different sectors.
WCNW: How have businesses and individuals responded to what you’re offering?
Neatcrown were named CoManufacturer and Packer of the Year 2023, at the prestigious UK packaging awards in London. This was in recognition of diversifying the business, and the commitment to supporting innovation and growth of businesses looking to expand their manufacturing capabilities and product portfolios within specialised fertilisers for crop production.
Our customers continue to grow with us, which is an accolade to the service and trust they have in Neatcrown. We believe that collaboration is key, ensuring regular communications in regard to supply, as
well as remaining flexible whilst ensuring high standards of quality and service. As our reputation grows, we are finding more new leads organically through recommendations.
WCNW: What are your career aims and aspirations? Is there anything else in particular you’d like to achieve in your lifetime?
I recognise in myself how important it is to have a career that fulfils a sense of purpose and aligns with my values. At this stage of my career, I feel I can utilise my chemistry expertise and knowledge for innovation, striving towards more sustainable practices in agriculture, whilst supporting others who may be at the earlier stages of their career. I am enthused with the direction in which the company is growing and on reflection, the change in career was an incredibly positive change and a much better fit for me as a person.
Having been introduced to coaching and mentoring in 2013 through an initiative in Wales to introduce coaching into organisations, I continue to be an advocate for coaching as a personal and professional development initiative and enjoy the work I do with organisations and charities offering coaching services.

Chester Racecourse was buzzing with excitement on Friday, 15th November, as the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce hosted over 350 guests at their Annual Ball & Recognition Awards. This year’s event, themed around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and sponsored by Ellis & Co, brought Chamber members together for an evening of celebration, reflection, and recognition.
The evening kicked off with arrival drinks at the Champagne Bar, before guests made their way into the Pavilion to take their seats. Chamber CEO, Sarah Bailey, welcomed everyone warmly, setting a celebratory tone for the night. Returning as host, journalist and broadcaster, Sian Lloyd, invited Helen Nellist, Chair of the Chamber, to the stage. Helen expressed gratitude to Ellis & Co, the evening’s headline sponsor, and introduced the event’s chosen charity, The North West Air Ambulance Charity.
Sian then led the awards ceremony, featuring ten categories with over 100 entries. Finalists had been selected in advance, and the winners were announced on stage to enthusiastic applause.
A full list of winners is available on the following page!
Following the awards, guests participated in a Wonka-themed raffle, purchasing specially crafted chocolates sponsored by KingKabs, with proceeds benefiting North West Air Ambulance. The lucky raffle winner took home a Melting Diamond Necklace and Bracelet set, generously donated by Lucy Quartermaine. An auction followed, with additional prizes contributed by the local business community. In total, the evening raised £11,646 for North West Air Ambulance, whose life-saving services provide critical care to patients across the region.
Reflecting on the evening, Sarah Bailey said, “Tonight’s awards allowed us to recognise the remarkable achievements of our members. With over 100 entries this year, our judges faced the challenge of selecting winners from an outstanding
pool of nominees. Congratulations to our winners, and heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, whose support made this event possible!”
The night continued with entertainment, including a game of pass-the-parcel for a golden ticket prize: a bottle of champagne. Local band Rhythm Train then took to the stage, keeping guests dancing late into the night.
Sarah concluded, “A huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes and to all our guests for their generosity. Your support directly benefits this incredible charity and makes a real impact in our community. It’s been a fantastic evening, bringing together so many people to celebrate what it means to be part of the Chamber. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event unforgettable!”

Let’s talk turkey!
Hot off the press – some topical food for thought with a distinctly seasonal flavour. Most certainly something for businesses to chew over and digest to ensure that they keep abreast of the latest thinking in branding and have a tried and tested recipe for success that isn’t bland for the new year ahead.
By Phil Strachan
The Think Brand not bland Guy
As I expected, it is happening again! Sad news indeed but it would appear that a very significant number of business owners and managers, entrepreneurs, marketing directors and marketing managers who commission branding, identity and graphic design projects, will once again end up with a turkey at the end of this year.
Sad news all around except perhaps for Bernard Matthews!
But it didn’t have to be this way if only they had worked with the right branding specialist. The fact is that despite good intentions and stout resolutions (plug for Guinness there!) made by many of them at the start of the year, they all just fell into the trap of failing to break with tradition. Failing to be different, they have ended up just like most of their competitors – headless chickens who have cooked their goose and almost certainly heading for a real roasting. And all because they failed to think brand – not bland!
Bad news all round for all – except perhaps for Paxo!
It is clear that businesses behaving in such a manner will never rule the roost. And to crown it all, by choosing to follow the flock and operate on a wing and a prayer, these businesses are in real danger of being left without a leg to stand on. Left to fight over the leftovers, they are destined to end up totally plucked and well and truly stuffed. Bad news all round for all – except perhaps for Paxo!
Cutting through the inevitable gobbledegook and without wishing to make a meal of things, it seems clear to me that this is the perfect time to
ruffle some feathers if businesses and organisations don’t want to end up with a turkey at the end of next year. Some basic fundamental truths, some of which may at first seem totally unpalatable, need to quickly be brought home to roost if businesses are to have any chance of carving out a real opportunity for themselves and getting a decent slice of the action in the new year ahead. Importantly, it must be recognised that what is sauce for the goose isn’t necessarily sauce for the gander because every business requires its own individual recipe for success that is both creative and original - and most importantly is brand not bland. All would-be high-flying businesses and business owners need to understand their businesses better and they must not duck their responsibilities. They need to identify their strengths and weaknesses and exactly what it is that they stand for and they must take great care not to kill the goose that laid the golden egg ie the reason why their target audiences should choose to use them rather than their perceived competitors.
It is strongly recommended that business owners and managers should give free range to the strategic and creative strengths of their chosen branding, identity and graphic design partners rather than simply relying on growing their businesses and brands organically.
The gift of bold, frank insights and a generous helping of mirth
It is inevitable that many thick-skinned and chicken-livered business leaders and business owners might turn tail and take flight at the idea of sticking their necks out and running fowl of established conventions.
However, if that is how they feel and they don’t like the heat, they really should get well and truly out of the kitchen. It is very strongly recommended that they should appoint a really good branding, identity and graphic design partner who can make sure that they think brand – not bland and who will help to add to their festive cheer with an injection of bold, frank insights and a generous helping of mirth. Essential ingredients to make sure that they stand out from the crowd and won’t end up with a turkey next year. If they don’t, it will probably just be tough turkey all round again next December. And the moral of this story is that if you don’t want to end up with a proverbial turkey at the end of 2025, leave the production of turkeys to Bernard Mathews and leave the stuffing to Paxo. Instead, place your trust in Phil Strachan, The Brand not bland Guy, for all things brand, identity and graphic design related. Let him help you to dish up success on a plate in the year ahead and stand out from the crowd by helping you to ‘Think Brand – not bland’.
To make sure that you don’t end up totally plucked and well and truly stuffed with a turkey at the end of next year, please call Phil Strachan on 07770 753 975 for an initial no-charge meeting to find out how working with The Think Brand not bland Guy could really benefit your business by helping it to stand out from the crowd in the year ahead.
NB No turkeys were hurt in the writing of this article and any puns included are purely unintentional.

What We Are Passionate About...
It is estimated that each year, 8,000 women enter prison. Over half of these women have survived emotional, physical or sexual abuse during childhood, and nearly half were suspended from school.
Tomorrow’s Women is a charity led by women for women based in Wirral and Chester and was created based on the principles outlined in the 2007 Corston report. Baroness Corston visited UK women’s prisons and identified that for many women who had committed non-violent crimes, prison was both disproportionate and inappropriate. Corston suggested the importance of identifying the underlying issues that led to a woman committing an offence in order to stop the cycle of re-offending.
Tomorrow’s Women began as a project in a small room and was set up to work with women within the criminal justice system or on the periphery of offending by providing tailored interventions to prevent offending and support women in making positive lifestyle changes. Due to the success and growth of the project, Tomorrow’s Women became a registered Charity in 2012 and moved into independent accommodation situated in central Birkenhead, which remains the main centre site to date. Following identifying the need for support for women in the Cheshire West area and obtaining a contract with the Ministry of Justice, Tomorrow’s Women Chester was launched in 2023 in Chester city centre at 5 Upper Northgate Street.
Tomorrow’s Women are passionate about supporting and empowering
Tomorrow’s Women
women from all backgrounds facing any personal issues to live equal and fulfilled lives. They believe that every woman deserves support, compassion and understanding, and provide a safe space for women from all walks of life. Tomorrow’s Women provides a “one-stop shop” of support whereby a woman can visit the centre and access support from a range of statutory and third-sector organisations all under one roof. This can include solicitors, police officers, training providers, counsellors, other charities and specialist support services. When a woman is going through a difficult time, it can be daunting to know where to go to access support and who to turn to, it can also be stressful not knowing the associated costs with accessing this support.
The work of Tomorrow’s Women is aimed at reducing a woman’s risk of offending or re-offending by providing targeted interventions around areas in her life where she may need support, this includes domestic abuse, mental health, substances, finances, confidence and self-esteem. There are however no criteria a woman must meet in order to access support, she is welcome to come along to take part in courses and activities or access support from staff with a variety of qualifications including IDVA, ISVA, Stalking & Harassment, and PTTLS. Women attend Tomorrow’s Women from all backgrounds and walks of life, facing a range of different issues but also to take part in the array of offerings on the timetable. Monthly timetables are created which are filled with exercise classes, sewing/ crafts, gardening, floristry and music. These activities can benefit a woman’s wellbeing and provide her with skills, knowledge and confidence
in her abilities. There are also a variety of courses whereby women can gain qualifications, these can include Maths & English, ESOL, Mental health awareness, Understanding Addiction, Nails, Understanding autism and Counselling L1-3. Each month timetables are created based on what the women want to see and their ideas and feedback are always encouraged during forum meetings.
Tomorrow’s Women are passionate about advocating for and supporting women who have experienced domestic abuse. 1 in 4 women in England and Wales will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime, and it takes, on average, 7 attempts before a woman is able to leave for good. Shockingly, on average, 2 women a week are killed by a current or former partner in England and Wales. TW host an annual VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) event which campaigns for ending violence against women and girls; women survivors are welcomed to tell their inspirational stories of overcoming abuse, and speakers from supporting organisations such as Police and other domestic abuse charities, discuss the fantastic work that they do. We also educate the women, and the wider community, on issues surrounding domestic abuse. This year’s event was held on Monday 25th November at their Chester centre and included workshops, guest speakers and refreshments.
Tomorrow’s Women’s work is invaluable. Thousands of women who have accessed the centre go on to live happy lives which are crime, abuse and substance-free. They give the women the tools to become empowered to take ownership of move on with their lives, and will always be there to support them.
If you or someone you know may benefit from their support, reach out by visiting their centre or calling 01244 906 494.

How important is your marketing ROI to you?
When you think about marketing your thoughts may not always jump straight to email marketing but maybe they should.
By Teresa Carnall
(with a little help from
AI)
With an average return on investment of £38 for every £1 you spend, unlike social media with an ROI of £1.28 for every £1, it’s not to be sniffed at.
Here’s our mmunicMail top four list of things you should be doing to make sure that your ROI is as good as it gets.
1. Use Personalisation
When you address your subscribers by name, you make your email feel more personal and engaging. It’s also shown that you’ve got a 640% more chance of the recipient reading the email – so why wouldn’t you!?
2. Great Subject Lines
You’ve got about two seconds (or less) for someone to read your subject line and want to open your email.
That’s why it’s important to keep it short, clear, and even intriguing. A little curiosity goes a long way, but make sure it's relevant to the content inside.
One of our highest opened emails had the subject line ‘You really don’t want to open this’ True story.
3. Segment Your Audience
Not all subscribers are the same. Segment your list based on demographics, interests, or past behaviour. Tailoring your emails to specific groups increases relevance and improves your open and click rates.
4. Use a Clear Call to Action (CTA)
Every email should have a purpose, and a clear call to action helps guide your readers. Whether you want them to shop, read, or sign up, make sure your CTA stands out and is easy to follow. Use a button instead of, or as well as, a link in the text.

Revitalising Communities: Kier’s commitment to Cheshire’s growth and development
By Sarah Morton Regional director, Kier Construction North & Scotland
The devolution agenda has gathered pace in recent years, bringing a potential boost to infrastructure spending and revitalising local towns and communities, thereby accelerating local economic growth. Kier has a longstanding history of working in Cheshire, supporting the regeneration of local towns to help boost economic growth and providing improved access to employment, healthcare, and community events.
We are the local contractor with national strength, bringing our multi-sectorial expertise and experience from across the country to benefit the communities in which we work. In the last five years alone, Kier has helped to transform 21 local towns and cities in the North West by building sustainable infrastructure for multiple sectors that will benefit local communities for generations to come. Inspiring communities
In Cheshire, we recently commenced construction on one of two new history centres in Chester and Crewe that will host the region’s archives. Cheshire Archives, a shared service of Cheshire East Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council, looks after the county’s unique and irreplaceable written and pictorial history, which dates back more than 900 years. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Wolfson Foundation, ‘Cheshire’s archives: a story shared’ will transform the way the archives service works and open the collections to a whole new audience.
Opening in 2026, the two new history centres will feature exhibition and event spaces, new research rooms, workspace for staff and volunteers, as well as environmentally stable storage for the archives.
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s regeneration of Winsford Town Centre is the biggest investment in the town centre shopping area since the 1960s. Our redevelopment work involves the construction of a new Costa Coffee now
open and work on a new B&M superstore and garden centre set to open in 2025. There will be a new 168-space car park alongside improvements to walking and cycling access as well as dedicated cycle storage.
New open public spaces are being created for pop-ups, events, and visiting attractions, with more green space in the town centre than ever before, creating a relaxing and pleasant environment to enjoy. Our Kier team has also refurbished and relocated the town’s war memorials within a new public square in front of the library, working with the Royal British Legion and Winsford Town Council.
Our award-winning project at Storyhouse, Chester, designed by Ellis Williams Architects for Cheshire West & Chester Council, was awarded the title of Best Change of Use of an Existing Building or Conversion at the Local Authority Building Control’s 2018 Building Excellence Awards. The project involved the renovation and remodelling of a Grade II listed Odeon cinema with an extension to house a new theatre and cultural centre. It became the first auditorium in the world designed to operate in two modes:
a 500-seat thrust stage for produced work and an 800-seat proscenium arch theatre for touring shows, replacing a traditional box office with self-service ticketing solutions.
It was the first cultural building in the UK to include a fully integrated library, creating a place where customers can borrow a book, use the bistro, see a theatre or film, or take part in one of the many participative programmes.
The whole team approach on this project ensured that Cheshire West and Chester Council’s building control service was involved throughout, working with their professional contacts in the fire brigade and the conservation team to transform Chester’s Art Deco Odeon cinema into a cultural centre after a decade-long absence of a city centre cinema and theatre.
Located in the heart of Chester, the building is next to the new Northgate Development close to the town hall and cathedral - completing a trinity of cultural, civic, and spiritual public spaces. Improving access to healthcare
We are incredibly proud of the role we play in helping to our local communities to flourish, opening access to new public spaces, educational facilities, as well as access to healthcare.
Since January 2023, Kier has been working with Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on a new surgical centre at the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich. The facility is being built thanks to funding received from NHS England, via NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board. Our site team is on track to complete the build in Spring 2025 alongside a refurbishment of the historic
The new Centre will provide a range of state-of-the-art clinical areas to support patient care. These include two advanced operating theatres, one dedicated to cataract surgery and the other functioning as a multispecialty theatre accommodating orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat surgery, dermatology, general surgery, and pain management. There will also be a treatment room, recovery area and consulting rooms.
The Trust’s ambition is to treat a large number of ‘high volume low complexity’ patients from across Cheshire who require less complex operations and procedures.
This will help reduce waiting times for patients, with an immediate focus on those who have been waiting 52 weeks for treatment. The Trust also aim to reduce the overall backlog and will treat around 12,000 patients each year.
It is hoped the Centre will become a cataract centre of excellence, providing eye care for people across the region. This will mean fewer people waiting for eye surgery across the region, improving patient care.
Investing in the future
But we are not just about creating spaces and buildings. We are committed to investing in the future of the people living
and working in the communities in which we operate. Our dedicated social value programs are hugely successful and are tailored and aligned to the needs of each local community. In our North West patch, we have procured £68.6m worth of work through local SMEs and supply chain. Additionally, we have created 18 employment opportunities as a result of our projects in the area over the last two years.
As a company, we are passionate about promoting the benefits and opportunities a career in construction can bring, addressing skills shortages, and promoting the breadth of opportunity. Having provided 77 apprenticeships to local people as well as welcoming eight T-level students onto our sites over the last two years has meant we are nurturing and inspiring future generations to address skills shortages in our industry.
At Kier, we are not just building structures; we are building futures. Our commitment to the communities of Cheshire is unwavering, as we continue to invest in projects that enhance local infrastructure, create job opportunities, and improve access to essential services. By fostering strong partnerships and prioritising sustainable development, we aim to leave a lasting positive impact on the regions within which we live and work. Kier is built by brilliant people and together, we are shaping a brighter, more prosperous future for everyone.
As a company, we are passionate about promoting the benefits and opportunities a career in construction can bring, addressing skills shortages, and promoting the breadth of opportunity.
The power of belongingness in creating psychological safety and performance
Every organisation is looking for that aspect of competitive advantage that will secure their future, take them to the next level and maximise performance. Ideally, it’s something that doesn’t represent a massive or risky investment to obtain and where they can be confident about the return.
In this search, how we do often overlook the most basic and obvious things? One of the most fundamental and basic human motivations might just be one of those under-leveraged opportunities!
Humans have a fundamental need to belong. It is hardwired into our brain structures, thought processes, social structures and behaviours. Consciously building strong levels of belonging at a team level was found to be the single largest factor explaining performance differences in work by Brad Deutser.
Helping managers to create healthy belongingness in teams can increase performance, retention, commitment, engagement and job satisfaction. It is also a core building-block to gaining the benefits of psychological safety – a concept popularised by Amy Edmundson. This is where people feel secure that speaking-up,
asking questions, introducing alternative perspectives, offering part-formed ideas and admitting to mistakes will not met with humiliation or punishment. Sounds great, right? So, where’s the catch…
Workplaces can unintentionally drive a range of counter-productive and unhealthy belongingness behaviours – leading to people being cautious, fearful or protective. Our practices can lead of people being overly independent or dependent – when the sweet spot is interdependence. Belonging takes time, effort and skill to create.
Here’s four tips on helping your managers to build team belonging:
1. Create a purpose and identity. Belongingness is about who we feel a connection with. However, it is also about what our shared purpose, identity and
beliefs are. Being explicit about these can strengthen a team.
2. Dial-down hierarchy. Who is in charge is important but only rely on this when it is absolutely legitimate and necessary. This allows other the space for stepping-up and avoids dependency and learned helplessness.
3. Support managers to become more open and curious about other’s ideas, contribution, questions and even mistakes. Thriving workplaces recognise there will be mistakes – as long as these are intelligent and occur because the situation was complex or new – this is a learning opportunity more than it is a failure.
4. Understand individuals. Leading and managing people based on their unique needs, rather than set-piece approaches, builds trust and a belief about them being personally valued as part of the team. This is going beyond treating everyone the same – but still treating everyone fairly. Often managers, and organisations, mistake standardised approaches for fairness and equality.
Group employees smash charity target
The P&A Group has raised a whopping £17,500 in support of North East Wales Mind, the company’s chosen charity for 2024, far exceeding its target of £10,000.
September proved to be a busy month for fundraising with lots of initiatives taking place including a hugely successful 150foot Liverpool Cathedral abseiling event when 12 employees faced their fears, as well as one employee taking part in Iron Man Wales. The Woodworks Garden Centre also held a hugely successful Charity Quiz Night. Not only was it a fun night for guests and employees alike, but it also raised a fantastic £2,500! Other activities this year have included the Chester 10K, the Manchester Marathon as well as cake bakes, raffles and a 24hour walk.
A wide range of employees from different divisions of the company based in Mold and Saltney, including P&A Pallets, Woodworks Garden Centre and Café and Zest Outdoor Living, have participated in the challenges and
events, with some individuals topping £1,000 in funds raised so far for 2024.
P&A Group’s Managing Director, Andrew Baker explained: “In a world where the importance of mental well-being cannot be overstated, we believe it’s crucial to come together and shine a spotlight on the significance of supporting one another’s mental health journeys. It’s important to do more to remove the stigma and silence that surrounds mental wellbeing and make it easy to talk about our mental health so supporting the work that North East Wales Mind is very worthwhile.
“We have now raised over £175,000 in our 14 years of fundraising – and we still have a few 2024 events to go! With next year marking the Group’s 40th anniversary, it would be great to hit £200,000 in 2025 – a milestone year.
“Our mission is about fostering a community of support, understanding and compassion. We believe that spending time with others, whether immersing ourselves in the great outdoors, engaging in physical activity or building on our hobbies are beneficial for the team and essential tools for increasing wellbeing in general.”
Highstream becomes first corporate partner for Project Learn Hive
Petty Pool is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Highstream Solutions, marking a significant milestone as our first official corporate partner for Project Learn Hive.
Highstream Solutions, a premier IT solutions company based in Chester, has established itself as a leader in the field of technology support and services.
Project Learn Hive is an ambitious initiative aimed at raising £11 million to establish a cutting-edge outdoor education centre and SEND centre of excellence in Cheshire. This project is designed to unfold in three phases, featuring a new residential outdoor centre that will enrich the lives of 6,000 school children annually, a vibrant
community hub, and a modernised college campus catering to up to 160 young people with learning disabilities and difficulties.
The partnership between Highstream Solutions and Petty Pool marks a pivotal advancement in empowering young people through specialised educational and vocational programs. This collaboration is dedicated to meeting the urgent needs of young individuals, especially those with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), ensuring they have access to essential resources and support, vital for promoting independence and preparing them for employment.
Highstream’s Managing Director, Paul Williams expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating,
“From Highstream’s perspective, we’re really keen to support this great charity.
After meeting CEO Sally Garratt at a Chamber of Commerce event, I was introduced to the incredible work they do to help young people in our area achieve their employment goals. We’re eager to contribute to the future plans for the college site, offering our knowledge, skills, and experience, along with some financial support in the coming
months. We’re truly excited about this collaboration.”
Sally Garratt, CEO of Petty Pool, shared her excitement about the new partnership, stating,
“We are thrilled to welcome Highstream Solutions as our first corporate partner for Project Learn Hive. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to empowering young people through education for the workplace. We are excited about the potential of this partnership, which will allow us to leverage Highstream’s expertise while providing them with opportunities to make a meaningful impact. We were pleased to recently host over 25 chamber members to site at Petty Pool for networking, and look forward to many more relationships built through our links with the WCNW Chamber.”
WCNW Chamber of Commerce CEO, Sarah Bailey, added,
“It is amazing to see the collaboration between two members following the networking event we hosted at Petty Pool earlier this year. We always talk about the power of networking but it is examples like this that really highlight the value organisations can gain from engaging with their local business community.”

Getting Started with Sally Ashe
SavvySally
What’s in a name?
I’ve worked as a scientist and as an administrator. This has given me loads of organisational, project management and analytical skills making the Savvy in SavvySally!
Your position?
Business Owner
About your business?
I’m an Online Business Manager which means I offer strategic and operational management, including database set-up and maintenance, project management, KPIs, data analysis, team management and competitor research. My clients have been varied so far, business coaches, a local magazine, a financial consultant, an entrepreneur and a pharmaceutical company!
About you!
I started out my working life as an administrator with a bit of childminding when my kids were little. Then, in 2008, I took myself off to university as a mature student, studying Molecular and Cellular Biology and then Neuroscience (postgrad). Then I worked as a scientist doing research and working as a manufacturing scientist until I set up my business in January 2024.
Why?
I have arthritis in my knees which makes it difficult to work in a lab now. I didn’t want to stop working altogether (no early retirement for me!), so I needed an alternative.
The light bulb moment!
My sister has her own business as a communications consultant and encouraged me to take the plunge. I thought about my skills and researched different types of business, finally settling on Online Business Management. And so SavvySally was born!
Who is your ideal client/customer?
There is not one type of business owner that I can work with and I enjoy working with a variety of different businesses. It keeps me on my toes and every day is different. My clients are mainly sole traders but more recently I have been working with larger teams too.
Best moment so far?
Getting my first paying client in January was awesome! It kick-started my business in the best way possible!
Biggest challenges?
Running a business is a constant challenge and a very steep learning curve. It is exciting and daunting. Going from a regular salary to being unsure where my income is coming from has been the biggest challenge for me and has caused lots of anxiety.
Benefits of the Chamber Start-Up club since you joined?
Meeting lots of people in the same position as me. I love the Start-Up Club, Sales Club and the Women’s Networking events. I’ve got to know a lot of my fellow business owners and it makes me feel less isolated.
Lessons learnt - What would you do differently and why?
I don’t think I’d change anything I’ve done! I researched before starting the business, I’ve joined various networking groups, including the WCNW Chamber of Commerce, and I’ve splashed out on marketing and business strategy training. The next step for me is to start working with a business coach to help me grow my business! Watch this space!
I love the Start-Up Club, Sales Club and the Women’s Networking events. I’ve got to know a lot of my fellow business owners and it makes me feel less isolated.

Tips and tricks for making effective video content for your business marketing
By James McClean Creative Director MC - Media Creative
Video is king! We all know it. In a world of TikTok, YouTube, and streaming services, video is inescapable. Instagram was once a photo sharing platform but now 85% of its traffic is video content. Brands no longer want front page newspaper ads, they want viral video campaigns.
The great thing about this is that we all have a camera in our pockets to get in on the action. It might sound off putting to put yourself on video but numbers don’t lie, videos posted on LinkedIn are 20 times more likely to be re-shared! There is nothing stopping you from giving it a go, but here are a few tips to make sure your videos are the best they can be.
Lighting
Don’t be scared, you don’t need to buy a big lighting rig, just open the curtains or go outside. Once you have lots of light make sure it’s lighting you or your subject properly. Don’t have the light source directly behind you or casting crazy shadows on your face.
Angles
Now that we are all very accustommed to Zoom meetings we are all aware of how off putting it is to be staring up someone’s nose while they are trying to give a presentation. The same applies to your video. Try and make sure your camera is at eye level, not looking up at you and not looking down at you. For your audience, looking you
in the eye is a great way to build confidence in your brands message.
Audio
This might sound self explanatory but you want it to sound good. Video content is as much an auditory experience as it is visual. If you are talking to camera/your audience in your videos, do every one a favour and get a microphone. Nothing too expensive just something cheap will do the trick. It will help to eliminate background noise like traffic or the kids next door. It might be a subtle difference but its screams quality.
Audience
Don’t get me wrong, videoing yourself and sticking it online isn’t always the best option. Consider who your audience is and your brand's tone. There isn’t a one size fits all solution. If you are a high end exclusive brand, a high end and high quality video from a production team may be better suited. If your brand is more about community, education or open dialogue with your customers then there is nothing more effective then a wholesome DIY video.
The great thing about this is that we all have a camera in our pockets to get in on the action. It might sound off putting to put yourself on video but numbers don’t lie,

Hi, my name is James and I am the Creative Director of Mc Media Creative.
If you have any questions about all things video marketing and branding, that’s what I am here for. As great as it is to have a pretty video, a perfect logo or a cool slogan, what really makes a marketing campaign pop is everything working together. You need a consistent look, feel and message, but we have to start somewhere. I encourage everyone to get creative and try to shake up your current marketing strategy, and video is a great place to start.
Sally Garratt CEO - Petty Pool
About Petty Pool
Established over 40 years ago, Petty Pool is a charity based in Sandiway, with activities divided between Petty Pool Vocational College, for young people with learning disabilities, Petty Pool Outdoor Education, working with over 4,500 local school children annually, and Petty Pool In The Community - linking young people to leisure, vocational and community activities. Petty Pool are committed to removing barriers to opportunity and ensuring that all young people have the chance to reach their full potential.
Sally Garratt, CEO says “Our vision is ‘empowering young people to discover a world of opportunity and possibility’ and it’s our conviction that the young people we support should have just the same opportunities as their peers without disabilities. Every area of the curriculum at Petty Pool is built upon our values, lived out by staff and learners alike, and specifically designed to give every young person the best chance of securing employment at the end of their studies. With around 5% of young people with SEND going into employment in the North West, Petty Pool far surpass the national average by more each year. 26% of leavers secured paid employment in 2024, giving individuals purpose, independence, and the opportunity to thrive.”
Since Sally joined in 2021, the organisation has been on a significant journey of growth and cultural change. Petty Pool have just been recognised as a world class employer by Best Companies, testament to the supportive, ambitious and trusting culture that their 123 staff experience. Moreover, they were announced 3rd Best Company in the UK Education Sector, and
19th best mid-sized company in the UK to work for.
Project Learn Hive
There are not enough college places in Cheshire to support a growing number of young people 16+ requiring specialist education, and Petty Pool have bold plans for redevelopment of their outdoor centre and college campus– named ‘Project Learn Hive’.
“We’re raising £11 million to develop a new outdoor education and SEND centre of excellence in Cheshire for 160 individuals with learning disabilities, plus 6000 local school children each year. It’s an ambitious challenge, but crucial to ensure that we can continue to empower young people to discover a world of opportunity and possibility, sustainably for generations to come” says Sally.
Petty Pool are seeking to build commercially focussed and engaging corporate partnerships, which benefit partner organisations as well as supporting Petty Pool’s vision. Newly launched corporate packages are designed to offer mutual benefits, providing businesses with valuable exposure, networking opportunities, and unique ways to demonstrate commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility, as well as resources, training and teambuilding opportunities. Look out for corporate fundraising events in 2025.
The Ground Up Project
The latest addition to the Petty Pool family is ‘The Ground Up Project’ – a newly established CIC, offering internships and employment opportunities for young neurodiverse people in the first Ground Up Coffee shop, at the café at Theatre Porto
in Ellesmere Port. Head there for a coffee or host your next meeting there, and follow ‘The Ground Up Project’ on social media for the latest!
Employer Engagement
Petty Pool are passionate about working with organisations to educate, inspire and transform the employment landscape, ensuring that workplaces are safe inclusive spaces that will allow the next generation of employees to thrive.
Developing partnerships with employers is key, not only to open doors for supported internships, but to break stereotypes around employment of neurodiverse individuals.
In May 2024, Petty Pool launched the first ‘Neurodiversity in Work conference’ at Carden Park Hotel, with representatives from organisations across the region attending to learn more about supporting those who are neurodiverse in their workplaces and hearing how to further incorporate inclusion and diversity into company culture. 150 delegates pledged to take steps to become more neurodiverse aware or offer workplacements to neurodiverse people. Plans are well underway for the 2025 conference, so follow Petty Pool on LinkedIn to stay updated.
