Message From the President & CEO
MR. D-MARS Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure. - Napoleon Hill In light of this momentous occasion, I am reminded of an old James Brown song that became an African American anthem in the 1960’s, “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud!”. I am proud of the many African American men and women who have found the courage to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams and climb the corporate ladder to undeniable success. From a personal perspective, I have firsthand knowledge of what it takes to build a thriving business from the ground up. I have also witnessed my professional peers putting their hand to the plow and not looking back, because they were compelled by something greater than them to go forward. That kind of bravery should be rewarded; it is akin to that of the Black Moses, Harriet Tubman who led over 70 slaves to freedom. Economic liberty is the new currency for African Americans. As evidenced by the awardees that grace this directory, they are cut from a different Kente cloth. Integrity, commitment to community, faith, and family are the key cornerstones that mark their greatness. They are givers and not takers who strive to leave an economic legacy for the generations that come behind them. Emptying the bank for the sole purpose of personal gain is not in their DNA. They strive to build community and make it a better place than what they found it. That is why we celebrate their success; that is why we choose to say “Thank You.” Best Regards, Keith J. Davis, Sr. President & CEO d-mars.com
Message from the Vice President “We get paid for bringing value to the market place.” -Jim Rohn Professionals and entrepreneurs are the pacesetters for the market place. We have been fortunate to have an economy that is conducive for growth in Houston. Having fertile soil to plant your seed is important, but being skilled in seed planting is a must in order to ensure your ultimate prosperity. The professionals featured in this directory are experts in their areas of responsibility. They are being celebrated because they bring value to the entrepreneurial experience and make their professional segment of the market place a great place to belong. Whatever your value, we salute you for sharing it with us. Kevin “Brother D-MARS” Davis Vice President d-mars.com

LIVING LEGEND 2013
F
ounder and Chief Executive Officer of Texas-based Rap-A-Lot Records, James Prince has built his recording company into a multi-million dollar music industry force in a little over ten years. What began as incentive to keep a group of teenagers from Houston’s notorious Fifth Ward in school, has emerged as one of the music industry’s most respected independent record labels. During the 1990’s Rap-A-lot Records was honored on several occasions as the Independent Rhythm & Blues or Rap Label of the Year by Billboard magazine. The label has produced a bevy of hit albums and singles garnering 18 Gold and Platinum records from groups that include Geto Boys, Scarface, and Do or Die. J. Prince’s pioneering spirit is the driving force behind Rap-A-Lot’s success. “It started (in 1986) when I worked at a bank,” explains Prince in reference to how he concocted the notion to establish the first noteworthy record label in Houston, Texas. “I would come home from work to have lunch and these two boys would always be playing hooky from school and were always rapping.” Prince made an agree-
ment with them. “I promised them if they went to school, I would help them to get started in music.” He adds, “I was just trying to get them to continue going to school! As time went on I found myself getting more involved with their lives.”

witness this monumental celebration! Since its inception, God has continued to enlarge Higher D’s territory at a phenomenal rate not only in numbers but also reaching the community through outreach programs and various ministries. A true visionary for change, Pastor Johnson has implemented what he refers to as a “5 Fold Vision.” The first phase includes the sanctuary at 9800 Club Creek. The second is Pastor J Ministries, which provides audio and video resources as well as scholarships to high school seniors in pursuit of higher education, and the third phase is NXL Inc., the community redevelopment arm. This faithbased initiative will provide family living, recreation, career development, and counseling. The fourth phase provides internal as well as external business consulting services, and lastly, the implementation of Higher Learning Academy which is an educational facility providing Christian Education for children (pre-school through 12th grade). God has also blessed Higher D with the D-Spot facilities - a recreational facility for our youth which houses the Office of Community Development (OCE) a grant program purposed to assist at risk HIV youth. Sharon has extended her expertise to penning her memoir and becoming an author of “Turning Hurt Into Purpose.” This true life story was written after she lost her entire immediate family within a 10 year timeframe to various illnesses and having to return to Florida to bury everyone because she was the sole survivor. This memoir is based on spiritual, physical, mental and professional experiences of survival, growth and knowledge based on positive outcomes as a result of her struggles. Sharon and her family attend The Fountain of Praise. Believing in the value of family, Sharon has been married to Will Phillips Jr. for 24 years; they have one daughter, 10 grandchildren, 3 stepsons, and a great grandchild (“they are truly the Wind Beneath Her Wings”). While recuperating from major surgery, Sharon continued to make a difference in the community by working with local Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and her staff and Congressman Al Green to assist families during tragic and difficult situations. She continues to serve and financially support various boards, such as the Chinese Community Center, Vietnamese Cultural Association, Texas Women’s Empowerment Foundation and the Board of Directors for Metamorphosis. She had the privilege of being honored by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee of the Eighteenth Congressional District; the Congresswoman says Sharon was “Honored for her underlying efforts in the community and her commitment and hard work and dedication to helping others …” Sharon Phillips’ life story embodies the term “servant leadership.”

ames L. Marshall, Jr. has been in the investment management industry for 25 years. He started his career with Merrill Lynch back in 1988 as a stockbroker trainee and then moved to Washington, DC to work for New York Life, where he began to realize the importance of educating the black community about comprehensive wealth building. As a part of his commitment to teaching kids in the DC public school system about money, James developed the Mini Moguls financial comic book series. This series is now a book on lessons in money management for kids used in schools, after school programs and summer camps. James converted these early years of training into a successful nine year career with American Express Financial Advisors before starting Marshall Wealth Management, LLC, a wholly owned, registered investment advisory firm with offices in Louisville and Houston. During this period, he has reached great heights in the industry by qualifying for the Million Dollar Round Table’s Top of the Table designation, which consists of the top one percent of the producing financial service professionals in the world. James says that he has been able to accomplish this level of success by staying committed to educating the black community about the wealth building process. A great example of that education can found his book; Wealth: Unlock the secrets to creating and protecting black family prosperity! His status in the investment industry has lead him to being quoted in several newspapers and magazines, such as the Arizona Republic, Courier Journal and Proud Magazine, where he was a contributing columnist. A graduate of Western Kentucky University, James continues his involvement by serving on the WKU Foundation Board and the Board of Advisors to the President. His commitment to encouraging more African Americans to choose a career in the investment industry has lead him to establish the J. L. Marshall Learning and Living Community at Western Kentucky University, Gordon School of Business. Of all the many blessings God has bestowed on James Marshall, the greatest is his family. He is married to Donna Lacy Marshall and together they have two beautiful daughters, Zoe and Ava.
