“We are the ones who leave. The large cloud dispersing in the west is our image” says the poem of Jorge Luis Borges.When we remember the beloved ones who have left us, who we had the chance to know or with whom we exchanged opinions or held conversations on recent or sometimes more distant occasions, we always remember a scene, a small and minimal anecdote that slipped, without being conscious, during that, sometimes last, relaxed talk. Sometimes it was just a detail within a story or sometimes an isolated story. It’s a story that, for some reason, can’t be removed from our mind. We can’t and perhaps we will not be able to detach ourselves from that person and that absence anymore. It’s something that somehow will make her eternal -along with many other qualities and attributes- in our mind. As the Italian writer Natalia Ginzburg said in her book “Lessico Famigliare”, it’s about "those phrases, on occasions those words, that when brought to memory suddenly recover an old relationship, forever linked indissolubly to those phrases and words once pronounced".
“Somos los que se van. La numerosa/ nube que se deshace en el poniente/ es nuestra imagen”, dice el poema de Jorge Luis Borges. Cuando recordamos a los seres queridos que se han ido, que hemos conocido un día, con los que hemos intercambiado opiniones o mantenido conversaciones, en ocasiones muy recientes o, a veces, más lejanas en el tiempo, siempre recordamos una escena, alguna pequeña y mínima anécdota que se deslizó a veces sin ser conscientes en aquella, a veces última, y relajada charla. En ocasiones, se trataba sólo de un detalle dentro de un relato o a veces de alguna historia aislada. Una historia que, luego, por alguna razón, no podemos apartar de nuestra mente. Que no podemos y quizá no podremos ya nunca desligar de aquella persona y aquella ausencia. Algo que, de algún modo, la hará eterna –junto a otras mil particularidades y atributos- en nuestra mente. Como sostenía la escritora italiana Natalia Ginzburg en su libro Léxico familiar, se trata de “esas frases, esas palabras tan sólo en ocasiones, que basta traer a la memoria para volver a recuperar de repente una antigua relación, unida ya para siempre indisolublemente a aquella frases y palabras un día pronunciadas”.
Sofia Gandarias was not only a remarkable intellectual of her time, one of those that can be counted on the fingers of one hand in each generation. Not only she was an excellent person, of sharp and accurate criterion, free of all kinds of ties.
