Rivers, Oxford], 1968-69

Unsettled Objects.

Unsettled Objects is a work that Lothar Baumgarten made when he studied in Düsseldorf (1968–71). It is a photographic essay y of display cases at the Pitt Rivers Museum, overlaid with pairs of opposing concepts. This textual intervention alludes to the underlying idea of the anthropological and museographic practices that gave rise to ethnological collections in the late 19th century and effectively displaced and decontextualized a host of utilitarian, ritual and artistic artefacts. The Pitt Rivers Museum was founded with the collection of 30,000 ethnological and archaeological objects donated to the University of Oxford in 1884 by Lieutenant-General Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers. During his army service, Pitt Rivers collected examples of weapons used by various peoples and soon moved on to other objects, such as musical instruments, masks, textiles or tools, enlisting the aid of dealers and fellows at the Anthropological Institute. Initially housed in the South Kensington Museum (later re-named the Victoria & Albert Museum), the collection illustrated his ideas about the evolution of technology and design. In order to show how diverse cultures had found different solutions to common problems, the artefacts were arranged in typological series instead of classifying them by
