Between Bauhaus and Brutalism On Dealing with the Heritage of Socialist Modernist Architecture
Das vor 100 Jahren gegründete Bauhaus gilt als die prägendste Bildungsstätte für Architektur, Kunst und Design des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Ideen der hier geprägten Klassischen Moderne beeinflussten in den 1960er-Jahren auch die Ästhetik der sozialistischen Architektur – eine architektonische Ära, die, weltweit als „Brutalismus“ verspottet, später oft zu Unrecht in Verruf geraten ist. Viele Zeugnisse dieser Epoche sind heute dem Verfall preisgegeben, andere werden mit neuem Leben gefüllt. Anlass, sich stichwortartig mit dem Umgang mit dem Erbe der sozialistischen Architektur-Moderne auseinanderzusetzen – vom auf dem Konstruktivismus fußenden Klassizismus der Stalin-Zeit bis zur monumentalen Sichtbeton-Architektur; Fragen zu stellen nach dem Umgang mit einem widersprüchlichen Erbe und seiner genauso widersprüchlichen Geschichte, in deren Verlauf funktionale Architektur oft zu Repräsentationszwecken umgedeutet wurde. Bis heute symbolisieren die Bauten auf ästhetisch meist faszinierende Weise Aufbruch und Stillstand gleichermaßen. BB
Founded 100 years ago, Bauhaus is widely regarded as the most influential educational institution for architecture, art and design of the 20th century. In the 1960s the ideas of classical Modernism, strongly shaped as they were at the school, influenced the aesthetics of socialist architecture, an architectural era which at the time found itself disparagingly referred to as “brutalism” and continues to remain, often quite unfairly, largely discredited. Many architectural remnants from this period find themselves today abandoned to decay, others however have been filled with new life. This provides good reason to reflect on, if but briefly, how we deal with socialist modernist architecture’s legacy, ranging as it does from the constructivist-based classicism of the Stalin-era to monumental concrete architecture, as well as ask questions about a contradictory heritage and its equally contradictory history, during which functional architecture was often reinterpreted for representational purposes. To this day the buildings in question symbolise, in an aesthetically most fascinating way, both departure from and stagnation in the past. BB
