Abstract The current research study „The use of music therapy for premature infants’ well-being and developmental care“ is a literature review. The aim of this study is to describe the use of music therapy for support of premature infant treatment and development in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The selection of the sources was based on the criteria that they have been published from 2005 to 2016, relate to the tasks and goal of the thesis, are written in English or Estonian and the full text is available. There were 42 appropriate sources used in the thesis. Every year 5-18% of babies are born prematurely and complications from preterm births are the main cause of death in under 5 year old children. Premature infants often need special care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The surrounding environment is important for their health and development. This study gives an overview of the use of music therapy in premature infants’ care and development support, the possibilities of use and the main effects on physiological and behavioural responses of premature infants. The results of the study show that using the professional music therapist, music therapy is an effective non-pharmacological and inexpensive additional way for premature infants to influence their physiological and behavioural outcomes positively and provide higher quality nursing care. 135
