Experience in acquiring information literacy and practical use of relevant skills during higher education studies amongst nursing students of Tartu Health Care College Ehtel Tuisk, Krista Lepik
Abstract The article is based on the study aimed to determine the experience of acquiring information literacy among the third year nursing students of Tartu Health Care College and how they evaluate their use of skills during the studies in the higher education institution. Information literacy plays an important role in the preparation of higher education institution students for their work in the sphere of health care as in evidence-based practice one has to be able to look up information and judge it critically. Ten semi-structured individual interviews were conducted to collect data and a qualitative cross-case content analysis was used to analyse the data. Results of the study showed that students perceived their progress of information literacy during the period of studies in the higher education institution. Critical thinking and skills of information retrieval have made a special progress. At the same time the problems of inadequate language skills and restrictions on access to databases became evident. The instruction on information literacy conducted in the higher education institution is suitable and does not require extensive alterations. Still, offering an additional instruction for the students who feel they need help either for search in databases, making references or evaluating and analysing articles. 225
