The Four Fundamentals of Retail Lumbering

"\f,/hat are tlre funda, mentalr of modern merchandiring in the retail lumber bruiness?tt askc a subscriber from C,olondo

We would say that theJ are four-with many branchee from each of them, each of which in itcelf ir a propogition of impodance. The four are:

Firct-To resure and amangd en attnctivephce of burlners ;rhat will p-p"tly dignify the good! you rell, and povide a welcome to the burinecr yis" itor.

' Second-To anticipate ttre neceuitieS and tfre derirea of the public in the stocking of tlre establishment.

ThirLTo pioeerh orploit the place of busincss, itr location, aervice, materialr, etc., lo that thoce whose trade you are intererted in gecuring witl have your busineac and what it means to them brought frequently and pleasingly before their eyer and min&.

Fourtlr-'To render such complete, thorough, ud intelligent service in the displaying, selling and delivering of the goodr, as to improve the.impression that an attractive ltore, a satisfying etock, anrl pleasing publicity har already created.

The average old fashloned lu4bcr dealer faib in all four of thec€ fundamentrah-Al.I. FOUR.

Hir place of burinecr ir not attractive nor intererting nor a good adverticement for a building rpecialist; not the place you would taLe your wife to go shopping.

He ctocked only raw rnaterials of rtandard "h"o"t r, and wae not equipperf to give building oewice.

He war tlre poorert'advertirer ofall retaiterr, acponding to rtatictics.

He thought service meant to gcll the goo& and collest the bilh.

A book the size of the Bible could be rrritten about each of theie rrlqp dart'entals.tt L"ocal conditiong and circumrtanoec dter caser, but every wouldbc nodenr lumber merchant ehould check up and see lrow he ig obrerving each of the three.

ICLOTHES MAKE THE MAN

iaid PresidentBenjamin Harrison, by which he meant thata man who looks shabby feels shabby, - that good dlothes give confidence and courage to the wearer.

Drop this axiom on the fellow that has money for af fine automobile but is ashamed to let anyone see where he lives.

Then interest [him in a Redwood home: one of which he will always be proud. There are many reasons for being proud of a REDWOOD home.

It is our native wood. It outlasts all others and it outclasses them. It is so secure in its beauty of color that it reguires no paint, altho it tahes paint and stains mighty well.

Getting back to clothes, pick out some of these'men you know with fine automobiles and offices but shabby, out-of-date homes.

Talking new homes will come easy if you answer their question-

People in the city of Santa Ana, and in the whole of Orange County know of the Barr Lumber Company, without a doubt.

Above is a picture of the very clever and unique advertising coupe that this modern company is using in their sales and collection department.

Mr. H. G. Larrick, Treasurer and manager of the Barr Lumber Company states that the car attracts a great deal

of attention on the streets, and at the recent Orange County Fair, they exhibited it in the, booth estab'lished by the company.

The house is a minature ,of a two story colonial house, exact in all details. The car carries the name of the Barr Lumber Company on all sides, making it impossible to look at the unusual appearing conveyance without knowing the origin.

WATCH YOURSELF GO BY

Just stand aside, and watch yourself go by: Think of yourself as "he" instead of "I." Note clearly, as the other men you note, The bag-kneed trousers, and the seedy coat. Pick flaws, find fault, forget the man is you And try to make your estimate ring true.

Despise your cowardice; condemn what'er You note of falseness in you, anywhere. Defend not one defect thatt shames your eyeJust stand aside, and watch yourself go by.

And then, with eyes unveiled to what you loatheTo sins that with sweet charity you'd clotheBack to your self-walled tenement you go With tolerance for those who dwell below. The faults of others will dwarf and shrink; Love's chain grow stronger by one mighty linkWhen you, with "he" as substitute for "I," Have stood aside, and watched yourself go by.

IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE_IF_

A lion met a tiger

As they drank ,beside the pool, Said the tiger to the lion, "You're roaring like a fool."

"That's not foolish" said the lion, With a twinkle in his eyes, "They call me king of all the beasts Because I advertise."

A rabbit hear,d them talking, And ran home like a streak, He thought he'd try the lion's plan, But his roar was a squeak.

A fox came to investigate, Had luncheon in the woods, So when you advertise, my friend,' Be sure you've got the goods.

WILL POWER

After having shot his enemy:full of holes, with his trusty forty-five, the toughest citizen of Mud-in-your-eye immediately gave himself up to the authorities.

"'What made you shoot this man ?" asked the sheriff.

"Self control," was the reply," If it hadn't ,been for that I'd broke his neck and chewed both ears off.

PEDDLING AND SELLING

The parrot talks when you leave his cage uncove.red. He .cannot reason, hence he talks out of turn.

To be a successful salesman it is more necessarv to reason than to talk.

The parrot is a peddler.

When you want to se'll, put yourself in your customer's place, and then decide how you could be induced to'buy the thing yourself. Then use THAT method.

'EAVENS'ARRY

I'm goin' to 'ave a little'ome That's mine from end to end, Where I can smoke an'lounge about, An' entertain a friend.

I'm goin' to 'ave a garden too An' plant a shady tree, An' live so that a landlord Will 'ave no'old on me.

ORIGINALITY

The two colored gents were brought into court, one of them, desperately mauled and beaten. Looking over the injured nigger, the judge turnbd to the other, whom he knew, and said: "M,ose, the Devil himself must have been in you to make you hurt that poor nigger that way."

Mose looked his victi'm over with the eye of an artist. "Jedge," said he, "th Debble may have tol me to bust his nose and black bofe eyes. but chewin his ear off-at was mah own idea."

THE

man who said, a few years back, that the I function of the retail lumber dealer was to figure billsand fill lumber orders didn't foresee the remarkable development inretailingjust ahead.

He didn't foresee the retail lumber dealer as the local building material specialist, handling many other building materials besides lumber.'What he didn't foresee was a community with enough confidence in its retaillumber dealer to go to himfor impartial advice on the selection and'use of building materials.

The'W'eyerhaeuserorganizationdoesn't believe the retail lumber business has yet reached the limit of its possibilities. As evidence of thisbelief is their policy of placing the retail selling of their new product, BALSAM-WOOL, exclusively in the retail lumber dealer's hands.

'When a retail lumber dealer will take the time, as many of them are doing, to talk BALSAM-WOOL insulation and thus help a customer get a better home, it's a mighty healthy sign that thg retaillumber business isn't "slipping." The Weyerhaeuser organization knows that there are enough of this kind of retailer in the country to sell all the BALSAM-WOOL that can be made.

From the retailer's standpoint BALSAM-WOOL is a good business proposition. It can be put in with a small first investment. It is easily handled and stocked at.little expense. It means an additional profit of $25 to $50 on each house bill. BALSAM.WOOL doee not compete with other items of yard stock. And besides that, it is a mighty fine item to push and sell in slack seasons both for city and farm trade.

From the home-builder's standpoint there just aren't any two ways about it. BALSAM-WOOL is a staple building €ss€n.

about fifty miles from the Pacific Ocean, is expected toq become one of the largest ports on the Pacific coast.

The progranr, calli for-the ultimate construction of three export, docks, each with a berthing length of 1,800 feet and each 350 feet in width.

The first unit, now under construction. which will serve the west fir unit of 'Ihe Long-Bell Lumber Company,s lumber manufacturing plants, is rising rapidly. 11 will have a berthing lengih-of 1,8ffi feet indwiti Ue of the 1re-av-iest tyqe of dock construction, being designed to carry 1,000 pounds per square foot. The dock will have both shipside and inshore railroad tracks.

Lumber rvill ,be handled, on the docks entirely by elec- tricity. Traveling hammer head electric cranes, fifiy feet in height having a working radius of 100 feet, will liand'le all the lumber as it is received from the mills and will also serve the ocean vessels moored at the docks.

Construction of immense docks on the Colurdbia River, at,the new ind-ustrial city of Longview, \Mash., is now under way. The dock section will be one of the largest undertakings on the Longview project, for the city, located

There will be a minimum of thirty-five feet of water at the face of the dock at the lowest stage of th( Colum'bia River. The largest steamships now entering' the river draw 27 feet of water when loaded to capacity. The Co lumbia River is 2,80O feet wide at this point, which is ample space for ocean.going vessels to turd around in. Another advantage of the Longview harbor is the fact that it is at tidewater, making it particularly desirable as a stopping place for vessels after their cruise through salt water.

The export dock, now under constructiqn, will have a

storage capacity of forty-five million feet of lumber and sufficient berthing 'length to accommodate four 12,ffi dead-weight ton vessels at one time, the largest vessels now making this harbor a port of call.

Some idea of the immensity of this project is shown by the fact that the unit now being built will require approximately 6,300 piling, @ to 110 feet long, four million feet of lurd, ber, 30,000 cubic yards of rock rip-rap and a half million cutbic yards of hydraulic sand fill.

The first unit is expected to be com.pleted within from six to eight months at which time the west fir unit of the Long-Bell mills will probably be ready for operation. At present four huge pile driving rigs and two rigs for the sinking of submerged bu{kheads are busy on the site an,C a 30-inc6 suction dredge is engaged in the work of filling.

Longview has received cargo ffom ocean-going vessels for the'last year at a temporary dock, near the site chosen for the permanent docks. Railroad tracks have been laid to this dock, making it possible for trains to transport construction materials to all parts of the city.

A ten-year fight waged by importers for the reduction of duty on plain Jawn oit tum'Uef was resumed, recently before ;ud!'e William Adarnson of the United States Appraisirs'-Court at the custom house, San Francisco.

Miss Brey. Building Merchant Extraordinary

I wish I could take every enthusiastic exponent of th.e almost-bleSsed art of merchandising building materials in this whole-country, and let them sit for a while-as I recently'had the privilege of sitting-and just talking merchandising to Miss Alberta Ruth Brey, of the beautiful little city of Porterville, California.

Gentlemen of the merchandising school, whoever you be and wherever you live, I beg to announce that in my judgement there is not on the top side o.f this earth a more truly remarkable lumber merchant than Miss Brey. S,he is just a youngster in age and appearance, but she has gone into this merchandising game with a fervor and an enthusiasm that will surpris'e even the most enthusiastic of lumtber'merchants. She has gone at it from many new angles, with a ferspective that is genuinely original, and the success with which she has met has simply urged her on to greater efforts.

I have told' of Miss Brey and her work before in these columns. I will probably do so again, because it would be unwise to try and tell so big a story as the story of how she merchandises, within the compass of a single article of business length.

Two and a half years ago they built a service and, sales room into their brick office building, and invited the town in to look it over. The townspeop{e came and looked, particularly the ladies, and they have been keeping her busy from that day to this, just building shqpping in Miss Brey's sales room, looking over the plans,, the pictures, the tbuiltin features, the home improvements, etc., that Miss Brey has to show them.

Talk about plan books. Miss Brey has two full plan book systems, and uses them both continually. But she has built for herself an additional plan service that is a

As Miss Brey put it:"I not only ca.n show thern how to build their dining room, but I can show them what kind of furniture to put in it, where to put the furniture, how to set their tables, arrange their draperies, etc." Isn't that building merchandising? And the ladries of Porterville have kept that service room busy ever since it was completed.

Miss Brey put some fancy French and other doors on display along one wall of the service room. SHE SOLD I5O PLATE GLASS FULL LENGTH MIRROR DOORS TO LADIES OF THE TOWN BEFORE THE SERVICE ROOM WAS WELL STARTED. Sold them just by showing them to the visitors, and quoting them on the door, delivered on hinges in their homes.

Miss Brey tries many advertising schemes, and she says they all pay. Here is her latest one, which she uses for "selling" all the newly married couples in the town. She ha,d printed some very attractive literature for th,is pirpose. Herewith will be found illustrations to show Miss Brey's scheme. The envelope in which the folder was mailed, was an attractive one, without any printing on the outside. It looks like a formal note. Inside was a folded double sheet of attractive note paper.

fn the first page-as 5|i6y111-was the name and address o{ the newly weds. In the center Wds a most attractively printed and worded little invitation to come to the BreyWright Lumber Company any time within a year, and exchange the note for $10 in trade. There were well worded and tactful congratulations on the last page on their wedding. The home picture in the center is beautiful, in four colors. It would make any new{yweds want a home.

One of these goes out to every couple that marries and

wonder. She took some big, attractive loose-leaf binder books, filled them as fast as she got the materials, with still black pages on which she pasted attractively home and build, ing ideas that she encountered in her constant search.

From House & Garden, Ladies Home Journa{, and other magazines of ideas, she grabbed rbeautiful pictures of homes, home surroundings, home furnishings, home arrangements, etc. She has two of those books now, tremendously attractive, and she is still adding to her collection. The ladies of Porterville know those books well.

lives in Porterville. Many of them have called, and so far, not one has redeemed the pledge who did not ,buy a bill of m.aterials besides. Miss Brey is delighted with the little scheme.

It is only one of the many clever things she does to create a desire for building things. There is not a grown person in Porterville who does not know about Miss Brey and her service room and her building service, and the nuusual opportunity she offers to builders at all times to come. Because IDEAS are her stock in trade.

New Use for California Product

Ragland explains that the plants are distributed between the rows of mulch, or roofing paper, and planted through the paper. The planting is done by thrusting a long trowel through the paper at correct intervals and by tilting the trowel the plant is slipped into the ground.

It was not until recently that anybody thought that the mulch paper could be utilized as an asset of agriculture.

C. F. Eckart, known as the Burbank of Hawaii, was the man to whom credit is due" says Ragland. Eckhart experimented for years before perfecting his process and obtaining patents on it.

Growers gradually began experimenting with the mulch on small tracts of land, and as soon as its success was demonstrated they increased their use of it.

Plantation Covcrcd With Pabco Mqlch Pepcr

A striking innovation in the growing of pineapples resulted in a 40 percent increase, and which may as successfully be applied to every form of agriculture, was revealed yesterday by R. E. Ragland, upon his arrival from, Honolulu.

"Pabco Mulch paper, laid in rows along the pineapple beds, has been the means of increasing the production of the island growers, "says Ragland, who is a meniber of the Monolulu export department of The Paraffin Companies, Inc. of San Francisco, which has supplied the large bulk of the insular growers this year.

"Today," says Ragland, "practically every grower in the islands uses Pabco mulch," and a new adjunct of a great Western industry has been firmly established.

That mu'lch will be used on practically everythingl grown where conservation of heat or moisture is needed before rnany years elapse, was the prediction made by Ragland yesterday.

He declared that successful experiments have been made with mulching paper on Sumatra tobacco grown in Florida which promises to revolutionize its growth.

"Growers have also been permitted to raise pineapples at a higher altitude than previously by the utilization of mulch," declared Ragland, "and {ands previously almost unusuable are now being put under pineapples."

FRANK TROWER RETURNS FROM HOO.HOO NATIONAL

Frank Trower, of San Francisco, Past Snark of the Universe, has returned from a three-weeks trip in the east, where he attended the Hoo-Hoo annual at New Orleans, and also visited,at Nashville, and St. Louis. In spealcing of the annual, Mr. Trower says that they had a progressive and constructive meeting, and that some good legislation was passed by the convention. He saidi that considerable time was devoted by the convention to the question of Hoo.Hoo clubs, and reports from the various lumber centers showed that considerable progress is being made by various clubs already organized throughout the country. Mr. Trower said that the California delegation, that consisted of Richard A. Iliscox, Frank Trower, C. D. LeMaster, Ed. Tennant, and Mrs. R. A. Hiscox, were entertained royally while in New Orleans and that one of the pleasant iight seeing trips that they enjoyed was an inspection trip of the New Orleans harbor, under the supervlsion of Supt. of Docks, W. H. DeFrance. En route to New Orleans, they stopped at Houston, Texas, where they were the guests of Ben Woodhead, of the Woodhead Lumber Co., who showed them the sights of the city and also entertained them at his home. Mr. Trower said, that the California delegation were particularly grateful to Mr. Woodhead, who was also mentioned 'by some members of the convention as a candidate ,for Snark of the lJniverse, but withdrew his name making C. D., LeMaster of California, the unanimous choice of the convention. At the conclusion of their Nashville gathering, where the California delegation was present excepting Eil. Tennant, Mr. Trower and "Mr. LeMaster left for St. Louis where they spent a few days on Hoo-Hoo business, prior to their departure to the Pacific Coast.
