AMARJEET RADIA EMIRATES GOLF CLUB LADY CAPTAIN

It has been an extermely hectic season over the last two months and as we gradually move into summer, I would like to share of few of our experiences and talk about the upcoming trip to Kenya.

W Dear Members,

ith a flurry of events over the season, the Men’s captain’s day was a successful day for club captain, Abdulfatah with a packed field of over 120 members playing. My captain’s day event was a also a huge success and thank you to all the ladies who participated and contributed in any way at all as they made it even more special for me. The memories of the “Rumba” after party at the Majlis will linger on for many a year to come and all I can say is the comradery at Emirates Golf Club is unmatched! The club management and catering team were also spectacular. Thereafter, the Easter scramble and usual medals were great fun events as were the challenge matches we played against the other clubs. The ICC Tournaments are always very competitive and exciting and making

it to the finals was commendable to all the ladies that participated in the three games that led upto the finals. The “Clash of the Titans” is still ongoing and I would like to wish all the participants all the best. Next, congratulations to the Rest of the World team for retaining the Curtisy Cup and it was a hard fought victory which proved both sides were equally matched. Ninu Smith capatined the ROW team and Michele Karlsson captained Europe. Both ladies did an outstanding job and congatulations to all who participated. The member’s party was a resounding success with it being held in the open grounds for the first time to accommodate over 750 members who were all eager to enjoy the James Bond theme. The fact that this was the first party in two years was also more the reason for all members to attend! I must admit that this venue is amazing as was the spread of food and delicasies that the culinary teams had laid out! Now to the upcoming Kenyan trip on the 10th of May, which I am sure all who are going, are excited about. It is home territory for me (although I have not had the chance to be back for almost two years) and am sure the experience of playing golf combined with some wildlife game watching will be a memorable one! Ladies, the best is all about savouring a very natural landscape and accepting a totally different environment and culture than what we have become accustomed to in the UAE. For those of you coming for the first time, it certainly won’t be the last! I wish all members safe travels and a great summer! Amarjeet Radia Lady Captain

SCHOOL OF RULES Dear Members,

A

s our EGC club matchplay championships are nearing their conclusion, I thought it would be good to focus this month’s article on this hot topic!

Under the R&A Rules of Golf, we can look to Rule 3 ‘The Competition’, under which we find Matchplay (Rule 3.2). There are some important elements to this rule which players often forget, or are quite unclear on, during their actual matches. Some of the most useful points are as follows:

Rule 3.2a - Result of Hole and Match In match play the result of the hole or match is decided as follows: • You win a hole when you complete the hole in fewer strokes than your opponent, your opponent concedes the hole, or your opponent gets the general penalty (loss of hole). • If your match is tied after the final hole and you need to establish a winner, the match is extended one hole at a time until there is a winner.

Rule 3.2b – Concessions • You may concede your opponent’s next stroke, a hole, or the match, but a concession is only made when it is clearly communicated. This can be either verbal or by action. • After a concession, the ball may be removed by anyone. • A concession is final - you cannot withdraw it once made and your opponent cannot decline the concession. *The only exception to this can occur when the concession may have been made based on misinformation. In this circumstance it can be possible to rectify the ‘mistake’.

Rule 3.2c – Applying Handicaps in Handicap Match You and your opponent should tell each other your handicaps before the match. If you declare a wrong handicap and don’t correct the mistake before your opponent makes a stroke: • If the declared handicap is too high and this affects the number of strokes you get or give, you are disqualified. • If the declared handicap is too low, there is no penalty and you must play off the lower handicap. - Handicap strokes are given by hole, and the lower net score wins the hole. - If a tied match is extended, handicap strokes are given by hole in the same way as in the round, i.e. as per the scorecard indexes. - Each player is responsible for knowing the holes where they give or get handicap strokes. - If the players mistakenly apply handicap strokes on a hole, the agreed result of the hole stands, unless the players correct that mistake in time, i.e. before they start the next hole.

I do encourage you to spend a little time to go through this extensive and comprehensive rule in full – it will arm you with some very valuable knowledge which can be used in the proper way in matchplay tournaments. As always, it is the spirit of the game of golf that should prevail!

Rule 3.2d – Responsibilities of Player and Opponent You have a responsibility to: • Tell your opponent the right number of strokes you have taken when asked. The player receives the general penalty (loss of hole) if they give the opponent the wrong number of strokes taken, unless they correct that mistake in time. There is no penalty if there is no effect on the result of the hole. • Make your opponent aware as soon as reasonably possible after you get a penalty. • Know the match score. If the players mistakenly agree on a wrong match score, they may correct the mistake before it’s too late. However, if not corrected in time, the wrong match score becomes the actual match score. In a match you should protect your own rights and interests under the Rules: • If you know or believe that your opponent has breached a Rule that has a penalty, you may act on the breach or choose to ignore it. • But if you and your opponent deliberately agree to ignore a breach or penalty you both know applies, you are both disqualified. • If you and your opponent disagree whether one of you has breached a Rule, you may protect your rights by asking for a ruling. If you have any rules queries that you would like to discuss over the coming weeks, then please do not hesitate to ask on your next visit to the club or simply email your query to me at churley@dubaigolf.com. If you enjoyed the article and found it helpful, feel free to drop me an email at the above address, quote the code SORACH, and be entered into a prize draw!

TOURNAMENTS UPDATE Many of the summer tournaments are ‘Open’ events meaning Emirates Golf Club members can play in the events at JGE & Creek too. This also applies to the OMA Emirates Medal which turns into a ‘Dubai Golf’ Medal as such. We really do encourage you to visit the other clubs and enjoy a summer of tournament golf.

A

s we move into May, it is very much a case of looking back at a fantastic golfing season while looking ahead to an exciting summer of tournaments across the three Dubai Golf Clubs.

March saw us host both Abdulfattah Sharaf ’s and Amarjeet Radia’s Captains Days. As mentioned by Barney earlier in the magazine, both events were a huge success and greatly enjoyed by the membership!

At the end of May, we see the traditional End of Season Scramble take place on Saturday 28th May. An event which is always hugely popular and traditionally marks the ‘end’ of the golfing season. However, that certainly does not mean the end of tournaments to enjoy! The 2022 Summer Tournament Calendar will be released very soon (in fact by the time of printing, it will likely be available). There are some exciting new additions, including the ‘Majlis Revenge’ on May 20th, while the ever popular ‘Red Hot Open’ will take place at all three clubs across three fixtures. For those that haven’t played it before, men play from the red tees which is an interesting challenge and requires ones short game to be on fire.

MEMBER EVENT FEEDBACK Since the last Club Life was published, we have received some very useful feedback on tournament experience for our members. One area we will be improving moving forward is the tournament information available to members through Viya. Once you have selected the chosen tournament in Viya, please click the ‘entry form’ link. Here, depending on the type of tournament, you will either be able to view an entry form or a tournament information sheet. We hope this additional information will make signing up for events, as well as understanding the formats, easier for members.

AGRONOMY UPDATE Well, I do hope you have all been enjoying the last few weeks of weather, it has certainly increased in temperatures which is a good thing for certain aspects of both courses. The increase has helped both the Bermuda and Paspalum improve in their growth rates and seen the courses recover well after the cooler months when grass does grow a lot slower.

A

s we know the Majlis greens are still not a year old yet and now to settled. This in turn brings a few things to certain parts of the greens. There has been comments about the edges of greens and want to assure you it is nothing to worry about.

traffic from a mower, as you cut across the green and then you do the clean up cut at the end to make sure it is tidy. You may think this is scalping but its just we have not done the clean up on that particular day, as needs to rest and recover.

Some of edges did struggle due to a multiple of factors. 1. Shade – When the grass doesn’t get enough daily sunlight it can affect the growth and cause the grass to be under stress and die. This happened on the putting green when we had the hospitality structure, which was only allowing some of the green to have a few hours sunlight a day. 2. Water Movement – Greens are settled, and water moves across the surface and can sit for a little longer. The closures during the summer where we do our hollow coring and heavy topdressing for the first time will help prevent any of this going forward. 3. Traffic – Areas of greens that have high traffic from walking onto and off the green can be stressed when in the period of slow growth. 4. Surrounds – The surrounds and green edges have now settled and during the summer there will be extensive work to level any areas that are uneven. There have been several things we have done to combat these factors now. We didn’t want to just turf the areas as this wouldn’t help us get to the bottom of why grass might be struggling, so it has been important to monitor and change the way we do things. Major work always happens during the summer and this year will be great to get onto the greens with some aggressive work to really set us up for a great golfing season. One area we adjusted already was the back of Hole 4. The surround was too high against the green edge and so we removed a large amount of soil so that water distributes better on the green and we don’t have a bowl effect. We have started to regularly leave the greens clean up cut. The clean up cut is a cut that goes around the edge of the green. It is the area that gets the most

We have implemented more work now on breaking the surface to encourage better water distribution and getting oxygen to the roots. We are seeing great growth as a result.

We expect full recovery very soon as growth is very good and have lowered greens heights, so we maintain good ball roll and speed.

BUNKER SOFTENING As was communicated in the past we were able to put drainage into all our Majlis green side bunkers last summer. The reason for doing this is so we get better water movement through the bunker and so we don’t have compaction due to water sitting on the surface. This has worked very well and have seen improvements throughout the course.

Throughout the week we also use a bunker machine in the bunkers with some extended teeth on the underside of it, so it maintains this softness aways. All green side bunkers are then hand raked, so they are presented in the best possible way. Every effort to keep the bunkers in a good playable condition is done by the team and we appreciate the positive comments we have received from members of the club.

TRANSITION Now that the temperatures are increasing you will start to see the rye grass in the rough on the Majlis start to struggle and eventually die. We have been proactive in encouraging the Bermuda grass under the rye grass and already seeing positive signs in quite a few areas. The focus for us over the next few months is to make sure this process is as smooth as possible. We have already needle tined and sliced the rough to encourage the Bermuda and will be adding sand where needed. The team appreciate all the support over the last few months and look forward to keeping the courses up to the standards expected.

We have also been very proactive for the past 6 months in making sure the greenside bunkers are tillered every week. This attachment goes on the back of the tractor and rotavates the sand to help keep softness and so we can remove any stones we may find. This is done every Friday morning so we keep out bunkers as consistent as we can.

Happy Golfing. Matthew Perry Golf Course Superintendent

For those of you who did not manage to attend, I’m sure you have heard from your fellow members what a great event it was and

will be sure to reserve your calendar early for next year’s party. A special congratulations to Jonathan Wheeler who won the Viya Target Golf activation after making an incredible hole-in-one from the clubhouse terrace to the Earth 18th to collect the prize of 10,000 Viya points!

SHEILA MCILROY JUMEIRAH GOLF ESTATES LADY CAPTAIN

Let me begin exactly where I finished my previous newsletter with an update of our wonderful ICC team and our quest to finally win that coveted trophy. We won our league and joined our fellow Dubai Golf teams and The Montgomerie in the final, which was held this year at The National Course in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, after some great individual performances it wasn’t to be our year and once again we had to settle with 2nd place, but I’ve no doubt with our strong squad and fantastic team spirit we will be ready to compete again next year under the guidance of Evelyn our very capable Vice-Captain.

I

CC disappointments were quickly brushed over by far more pressing thoughts… securing dresses for our inaugural Member’s Party. Massive congratulations to all involved in organizing what was a memorable night of fun and I’m sure one that will be a highlight on our social calendar for years to come. The culinary choices presented on the evening were exceptional and gave us a taste of what is to come at JGE over the coming months. With raffle prizes, speeches and entertaining music by Sean Gavin and his band the evening was definitely one of the best. L ADY

Our Park Hyatt Stableford on the 30th March was won by Valerie Darnault, Juliette Castell, Rim Sun Lee and Evelyn Downham with NTP vouchers going to myself and Rim Sun Lee. Our Lounge Spa Ladies which was played on Earth, where the greens were enough to test any established pro was won by Claudia Kilcullen, Myself in 2nd and Gill Stevens in 3rd place with Evelyn & Vicks winning NTP. Once again massive thanks to Tara and all at the Lounge Spa for providing us with their fabulous vouchers. With the longer evenings we organized a social event and were joined by the ladies group from the Peter Cowen Academy. The scramble format was popular choice and a wonderful evening was enjoyed by our 32 ladies who finished off with prize giving at Kasturi. The winning team of Trudi McMullan, Lisa Schofield, Sunny Raymond and Rachel Ewin with NTP prizes going to Valerie Darnault and Sara Chadwick. Last Wednesday, we said goodbye to our wonderful, always positive Pro Anneke Strobach. She will be greatly missed by her students, colleagues and the Ladies group whom she played with on a Wednesday morning. Her positive, relaxed cheerful manner is a wonderful gift that will take her far and we look forward to following her career. Our Park Hyatt winners on the day were Sylvia van Der Tol and Sara Chadwick in a pairs scramble format. Until next time stay well hydrated and enjoy your golf. Sheila McIlroy Lady Captain

Our Scratch League Team have had another successful season, after being drawn in a difficult group with Trump International Dubai, Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, the team did a fine job by qualifying as the league’s runners-up.

Our JGE Ladies once again had an extremely successful year within the Ladies Inter Club Challenge (ICC). In the group stages, JGE were drawn with Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and The Emirates Golf Federation (EGF).

E

ls Club Dubai were the Semi-Final opponents, the home leg was played on Saturday 23rd April over the beautiful Earth Course, where two very strong teams came head-to-head. Representing JGE were, Chris Wilmot, Ben Wills, Drew Foxcroft (Captain), David Bainbridge, Simon Howells, Bilbo Perot, Yash Majmudar, Carl Downham and March Schoombie. In an extremely tight contest, the home leg finished in a tie of 2 each. The second leg was played over the Els Club Dubai, where Mark Schoombie replaced Bilbo Perrot, again the tight contest saw both sides drawing 2 – 2, resulting in an overall result of 4 – 4. Unfortunately, Mike Mezei and Andrew Burmester played the first hole beautifully to clinch the win. Despite the loss the team have had an exceptional season and should be very proud of their performance this season. Many thanks to Drew Foxcroft for captaining the team and organizing everything for this year’s campaign.

J

MAX BURROW DUBAI CREEK CAPTAIN Fellow Members,

It is hard to believe that we are already in May and that summer is almost upon us. I wish you safe travels should you be heading away over the coming months. If you are staying in Dubai, I hope you will enjoy some golf without the usual transition period between the grasses. The Bermuda is looking healthy with good coverage, so we should enjoy excellent playing conditions in comparison to typical years.

am pleased that David Taggart and his course maintenance team have been implementing the first phase of a Ghaf tree planting initiative, with more to come in various areas on the course. I hope this will provide a long-term net gain to biodiversity at the club following some of the tree losses in 2021.

In March we enjoyed a fantastic and well supported Members Party. Many thanks to the club and Park Hyatt for laying on a superb evening, with great entertainment, fireworks and an incredible F&B spread. I look forward to seeing how this will be outdone for next years 30th anniversary! Another highlight of recent months has been the successful defence of the UAE Ladies ICC by our Dubai Creek Ladies. Captain Beatrice and the team made it three victories in as many years in this seasonlong premier inter-club event for ladies. Many congratulations to all of those who represented the Creek throughout the season! I look forward to providing my full support to the Mixed Open on Saturday 21st May 2022, which was a fantastic event in 2021. The event will once again be supported by Park Hyatt, with excellent on course (and post round) food and beverages. I encourage as many of our members and guests to join us for what will be a great event. Best wishes, Max Burrow

CLUB UPDATE

UNPLAYABLE BALL This month, I would like to draw our attention to the rules of golf, in particular penalty areas, unplayable lies and what happens when you play from the wrong teeing area in a club match play! I know the Rules of Golf can be fairly boring but please bear with me…

RED PENALTY AREAS

Y

ou will notice recently that we have removed all Yellow Penalty areas at the club and replaced them with Red. Red penalty areas provide the golfer with more flexibly and options when choosing how to play their next shot.

When your ball finishes in a Red Penalty area, you can either play the ball as it lies or take penalty relief with three options:

An unplayable ball occurs when a golfer decides it is not possible to play their next shot; an example of this could be when their ball rests against a tree or has perhaps been found in a large bush. When you deem your shot as unplayable you once again have three relief options, all coming with a one shot penalty: I. Go back and play the shot again from its previous location (Stroke and Distance) II. Drop the ball behind, keeping on line with the pin III. Take relief laterally of two club lengths, no nearer the hole

MATCH PLAY - PLAYING FROM THE WRONG TEEING AREA Feedback has been positive from the membership, with regards to playing the club OMEGA Match Play Championships from the Blue/Red stones. Naturally however, when in the heat of battle, some members have found themselves walking on to the tee box and playing from the tee markers of the day, only to realise after their tee shot that the Blue/Red stone is 10 yards behind them!! In this instance the following rule of golf comes into effect: 6.1.b. Ball Must Be Played from Inside Teeing Area If a player who is starting a hole plays a ball from outside the teeing area (including from a wrong set of tee markers): (1) Match Play. There is no penalty, but the opponent may cancel the stroke:

I. Go back and play the shot again from its previous location (Stroke and Distance)

I. This must be done promptly and before either player makes another stroke. When the opponent cancels the stroke, he or she cannot withdraw the cancellation.

II. Drop the ball behind its point of entry to the hazard, keeping on line with the pin

II. If the opponent cancels the stroke, the player must play a ball from inside the teeing area and it is still his or her turn to play.

III. Take relief laterally of two club lengths, no nearer the hole (this is the additional option available to you when comparing Red and Yellow Penalty Areas)

III. If the opponent does not cancel the stroke, the stroke counts and the ball is in play and must be played as it lies. As always, if you have any queries regarding the rules of golf, please do not hesitate to reach out! CLU B

n Saturday we were delighted to welcome 26 junior players from across the UAE to Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, ensuring a strong field for this year’s junior open. Well done to all of our competitors, a fantastic day which was tightly contested and played in great spirit.

Some fantastic prizes were on offer and so firstly, a huge thank you to Ping for their generous support of this year’s event.

Now for the results… On course, both a Boys and Girls Nearest to the Pin prize was on offer. Demonstrating some fantastic iron play, our Girls winner on Hole 8 was Sakura Kawakami and on Hole 14, Lorenzo Lironi took the prize in the Boys competition. The Net Division was highly contested and a winner was decided by the narrowest of margins. Finishing Runner-Up, and missing out on countback after shooting a solid 1 over 72 was Bjorn Brake. With the better back nine, therefore, our Net Winner was Wenji Li, also with a +1, 72. Well done Wenji! The Ping Dubai Creek Junior Open is a gross competition and finishing RunnerUp, therefore, in the Overall Division with a great round of 74 (+3) was Emanuele Galeppini. However, as the tournament progressed, one competitor emerged as a clear winner. After falling behind early on in her round, Hannah Alan was able to finish in style with a 3 under par back nine to post a superb round of 70 (-1). Hannah is the Ping Dubai Creek Junior Open Champion for 2022!

W

hen you first set foot on Augusta National it is hard to shake the feeling that you aren’t watching it through the TV. When you have seen it so many times and know it so intimately, you can’t help think that Jim Nantz is going to start speaking from somewhere. Each morning I was tasked with cleaning the already pristine ‘Second Nine’ fairways (ANGC consider it uncouth to say Back Nine, preferring First and Second Nine). As the sun rose and we made our way down the 11th fairway, mist billowing off Rae’s Creek, it stops you in your tracks and you just stand and stare at it. Then a bird chirps, the sun breaks through the trees, gleaming off one of the brilliant white bunkers and you can’t help but smile, it just knows how to show off. Distilling the attention to detail into one article is impossible, compounded by the fact that everything they do is a fiercely guarded secret, even to the army of grounds crew volunteers that work the event each year (There is over one hundred of them, many of whom have worked more than 15 Masters). None of us know what height they cut the grass, how many times they cut it or roll it, how fast the greens are rolling, how dry or firm the greens are or what chemicals they have applied to the grass. They are a very friendly, hospitable ‘Southern’ team but as soon as you probe too far, the shutter comes down and the conversation awkwardly ends. The amiable southern disposition belies a deep commitment to science and data. The Superintendent carried a ‘Heat’ map of each green every morning, detailing, to minute detail, the temperature and drought stress of each green. This isn’t uncommon elsewhere in the world but the level of precision is unprecedented, quite literally every inch is measured. Secondly, the pins are not set to the yard/foot/ or inch but by the millimetre. A committee of at least 15 walk every green in the morning, comprised of members, the world’s best superintendents and an army of over qualified staff to assess ‘exactly’ where the hole should be cut. I am assured that a centimetre

70

here or a centimetre there can make all the difference. Normally I would scoff at this but having seen the movement in the greens and just how firm and fast they were playing, I have no doubt they were right. Pins are tested to the n’th degree before they are selected and then GPS’d, tape measured and cross referenced. In the mornings I was part of the fairway cleanup team and in the afternoons I was stationed to the 12th Green with 2 other volunteers. Between groups we would scurry on to the greens, brush any sand splashes and hand pick the leaves and pine needles that had blown onto the green. It is certainly a special spot, tucked away from view with special access to a part of the course that very few people ever get to see. It is so quiet and you can hear every word the players say, some more colorful than others. Once tournament play starts you can follow the roars from around the course which was especially exciting as Rory built momentum on the final day and when Cam Smith birdied the 11th it elicited the loudest cheer of the week from the Amen Corner crowd. Whilst seeing all of those classic images from the television coverage in person was surreal, what was even more special was getting to see views of the course and around the clubhouse you don’t see on TV. Two that stick in my mind are the view from the 5th Green/6th Tee. The elevation from here means you get a birds eye view of the 6th Green/7th Tee as well 16th Green and the amphitheatre that is forming around it. Incidentally the ‘skimming’ of balls across the lake during the practice rounds draws bigger cheers than most of the regular competitive golf. Deafening pantomime boos rain down for any player that threatens to not take part, it would be interesting to know whether this new tradition is equally as popular amongst the Green Jackets as it is the Patrons. The second memorable view and my favourite spot to watch golf was the 7th green. It is such a tough green for the players to navigate but until you stand there, you would never know just how close the holes are to each other. The 2nd Green, 3rd Tee, 8th and 17th fairway are so tightly packed and the trees are thin

A touch hyperbolic, but he had a point. The most highly regarded professors, construction specialists, chemical suppliers and irrigation manufacturers sat in a room that also contained the Superintendents from some of the best clubs in the country and around the world (Seminole, Hazeltine, Liberty National, Bethpage, Oak Hill and Muirfield Village to name a few). I was struck by the fact that lively debate amongst these individuals during rain delays will no doubt be shaping turf management decisions around the world in the coming years. One Phd student from the leading Turf School in the states was asked to present her findings because the room found it so interesting. It speaks to the understated ‘Southern’ culture at ANGC that they welcome such a wide diversity of opinion in their quest for ever higher levels of perfection, they listen, they don’t preach and they never seem stressed. It does help that they have every conceivable resource at their disposal. They have an enormous high tech maintenance yard that still did not have enough space to house all of their machinery. They do so much reconstruction each year (ANGC is only open 4 months of the year) that their contractor has a permanent and similarly sized and stocked workshop just adjacent to the maintenance compound. A landscape nursery, staffed by a team of approximately 20 is in the far corner of the property with enough stock to replant almost the entire golf course. In the two weeks leading up to the event they had to do just that. Unseasonably cold temperatures had decimated most of the famous azaleas and they were still replanting new stock right up until the Sunday when I arrived for the Drive, Chip and Putt.

enough that from this area you can see down to 16 Green and up to 18 Green. On Sunday as a player it would be so distracting as you can see and hear where the entire field are and how well they are playing. The back of house buildings amount to a small town. The media centre, complete with private tunnel access, is bigger than most hotels. Stories abound about plots of surrounding land that the club are steadily buying up. One plot has recently been converted to Beckermans Place which is their premier hospitality venue complete with 4 replica greens for the well oiled Patrons to practice on whilst they sip their glass of Crow’s Nest IPA, a new brand of hops brewed solely for the Masters and served out of taps modelled in the shape of the famous lodgings that the competing Amateurs stay in each year. Perhaps my biggest regret of the week was not hiding my Staff credentials and buying one for myself. As much as I tried to resist, as momentum built towards Tiger playing, it was tough not to join the thousands of people following his every move. On Thursday I snuck behind the 2nd Tee to see him hit his drive. It is pretty compact now they have pushed the tee as far back as it can go and as he put his 3 wood back in his bag, we stood shoulder to shoulder contemplating whether he had in fact hit it too far right. Undoubtedly, fatigue and pain meant that he struggled on the weekend but he was among the most impressive players on the range throughout the week. Players would stop on the range to watch him hit balls, as much in awe as the rest of the Patrons. When they walked away they would all shake their head and smile in disbelief, incredulously talking to their caddie about how good he looked. He beat 8 of the worlds top 12 over the first 2 days on a golf course that Tyrell Hatton probably wasn’t as far off the mark for criticising as people might admit. It was brutally tough and you could sense that by Sunday after battling the weather and the sadistic setup, it wasn’t just Tiger that was mentally and physically exhausted and ready for the week to end. Superintendent Brad Owen commented on the final day that if a meteor were to hit the golf course maintenance yard that week (meteors can be that precise at Augusta) then there would be a good chance the golf course maintenance industry would grind to a halt.

Perfection is their brand and they are so committed to it. Everything, in every corner of the property is painted White or Green. Except for the security camera I found deep in the woods behind the 12th Green, I’ll let you know next year whether they’ve fixed it. They dictate the language their staff must use. ‘You’re welcome’ is a big no-no, it should instead be “It was my pleasure”. All the signs whether customer facing or back of house were pristine and typed out in the same font. Strict adherence to the brand perpetuates the mystique, in turn driving the business behemoth that is The Masters. Whatever crazy numbers you hear that they make in the pro shop each year, treble it and you’re probably halfway there. People go solely for the purpose of buying the merchandise, to many, the golf plays second fiddle. This was driven home when I was stood watching Bryson DeChambeau hit his approach into 13th Green when a huge man, clutching 4 bags full of shirts and sporting a tattoo that said ‘Guns & Hoses - South Columbia Fire Dept’, written around a burning skull, said to me “Excuse me buddy, which hole is this?”. I felt a certain sense of frustration that he’d won the ballot. It is truly every bit as special as they make it out to be. Not only is it pristine but they also know how to put on a show. Everywhere you look you can see them doing things both on the golf course and around the clubhouse that if they were really honest are just for a bit of theatre. Who can blame them, when you are that good and you make it look so effortless you have to create ways to be better and for people to notice. It just adds to peoples fascination. Patrons would quite literally beg to join the army of volunteers filling divots on the fairways each evening or clean the dew in the mornings. Did there need to be 30 people doing it? No. But it looked cool. My lasting memory was watching Tiger limp from the 17th Green to the 18th Tee, roared on by the fans and then thumping his drive with his last bit of energy down the narrow chute to the middle of the fairway. The applause followed him the entire hole, building to a crescendo as he reached the green. Everyone just felt so privileged to see him there. Besides not sampling one of their IPA’s my other regret was that I wasn’t able to take my father, it’s that sort of place. If you ever get the chance to go, drop everything and go but make sure you take someone with you if only so when you get back and can’t stop talking about it there will be one person that doesn’t find you insufferable.
