CHOOSING YOUR COURSE

What do you need to think about? When choosing your course it is a good idea to read through the following information so you know what to expect from your course and what options are available to you. These steps outline how to go about choosing your course and are followed by more information to help you. 1 Where are you now? Check the progression table opposite to see what levels of study are currently available to you. It might be that you need to start on a lower level course in order to progress to a higher level of study, so check that your entry requirements meet the course you are considering. 2 Come to an Open Event This gives you the opportunity to speak directly to course tutors and apprenticeship assessors who are all experts in their fields. They can help you decide the best way forward. You can find dates for these events on page 3. 3 Get help You can also contact our Student HUB to speak to our independent careers advisor who can help you look through your options and find the correct route for moving forward. 16-18 Study Programme Each student aged 16-18 years at HLC has a Study Programme specifically tailored to meet their educational needs and career aspirations. It consists of the main chosen qualification, as well as further development of maths, English and employability skills. Its aim is to improve young peoples’ career prospects and also widen options for higher level study. These programmes include: • All full-time students aged 16-18 years will study English and maths as part of their studies. This will be either GCSE or functional skills depending on prior GCSE grades and initial assessment. Those students who have already achieved sufficient grades will be supported through a programme of directed studies. Maths and English skills and the ability to apply them are seen as essential skills by universities and employers. Many universities now accept a Level 2 Functional Skill in maths and English as recognised qualifications which carry UCAS points. This is a government-driven initiative, fully supported by the College. • Each full-time student will participate in work experience as well as activities designed to develop the skills and confidence required for their progression. • Those students who aren’t able to study for a substantial vocational qualification (e.g. if they have complex learning needs and/or disadvantage) will study a programme to develop their employability skills which might include some work experience.

Whilst adult students do not have study programmes, they do have access to the same support and resources as all other students. The College currently works with over 1,500 apprentices and offers 39 different apprenticeship subjects and routes ranging from Level 2 right up to Degree level. Some people find that learning ‘on-the-job’ works better for them and it is important to check if that might be an option in your chosen subject area. Thinking About Studying A Levels? HLC are very proud to have merged with Ludlow College in Shropshire. Just 20 minutes from Hereford by train, the College provides an excellent choice of A Levels for school leavers and has a long-established association with Balliol College, part of Oxford University. In 2017 Ludlow College achieved a 100% pass rate for A Levels reflecting the high quality of teaching and learning. Students achieve excellent results with the vast majority progressing to higher education and places secured at top universities. Please note that our A Level courses are only offered at Ludlow College and not at the Hereford or Holme Lacy Campuses. Apprenticeship Team T: 0800 032 1986 E: busdev@hlcollege.ac.uk STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths) Careers The College recently launched a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Centre initiative in partnership with the NEF (The Innovation Institute), which will see the development of the College’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics provision over the next three to five years. Any STEM-related subjects have our STEM Centre approval logo on them and are part of the College’s initiative to invest and develop these areas. You might not realise that there are many varied and exciting career paths that include elements of STEM subjects. As the use of cutting edge technology becomes increasingly common in all sectors, more employers are valuing STEM-based skills. Traditional subjects such as plumbing could lead to careers in sustainable construction, or courses in beauty therapy could lead to working with beauty laser treatments.

As the College continues to develop its provision in STEM subjects, students will benefit from developing STEM-related skills as well as an awareness of how those skills can be used to progress to diverse future careers. Can I Study University-level Courses at the College? Yes, you can study a wide range of university-level courses at the College and this enables many students to save money by studying locally. Many courses are run in partnership with the University of Worcester and others have long-running relationships with industry-specific institutions. All of our university-level provision is taught by experts who are leaders in their chosen fields and our courses are tailored to the relevant professional standards for that subject area. What about Higher & Degree Apprenticeships?

Higher and Degree Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 4 or above (relevant to the occupational sector or job role), and as defined by the Framework or Standard. Higher Apprenticeships at Level 4 and 5 can allow progression on to university degrees, and Degree Apprenticeships are also now becoming widely available in most sectors. To start a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have a relevant Level 3 vocational qualification or three good A Levels, or have completed a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship. WHAT IS HEREFORD UNIVERSITY CENTRE? Run in partnership with the University of Worcester, the Centre acts as an educational and cultural hub, aiming to raise educational aspirations in Herefordshire and encourage increased participation in higher education.

How Can it Help Me? At the core of the Centre is the HUC Coordinator who facilitates a range of talks, lectures and activities aimed at involving the community at the College. Though these will all be on varied subjects, they offer you the opportunity to get a feel of what university lectures might be like and how you can be inspired by the expansion of ideas and theories.

STUDENT HUB & LEARNER SERVICES The Student HUB (based in the Learning Resource Centre) is the place where you can get all the help and information you need throughout your time at the College. It will provide you with the resources you need for your development and study, from tutorials to support and from UCAS applications to the annual Fresher’s Fair. Learner Services provide all the key areas and resources you will encounter during your time here, from catering facilities to finance. All services are available to all students and are not campus-specific.

Hub Resources, Support & Advice Tutorials & Personal Tutor Each student participates in six group tutorials a year on a variety of subjects which are facilitated by the Student HUB and are designed to inform and develop your understanding of the world around you. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will act as your pastoral advisor and academic guide. Participating in three one-to-one tutorials during the year, your personal tutor will help you to monitor your progress and deal with any difficulties you may have.

Careers & Advice Kudos AD is the College’s digital careers platform, offering all users information and advice to support career choices. Kudos AD matches users to careers based on a personal profile developed through an interest inventory and skills analysis. This helps to support students, parents and carers to identify pathways into careers using accurate and up to date information. Our Learner Progression Advisor provides free, impartial, Matrix accredited confidential advice to potential and current students. The Advisor can give advice to help you make the best decisions for your education, career and university-level opportunities. Learning Resource Centres The College has an LRC at each campus, we aim to provide a range of quality resources and information services to support the teaching and learning needs of the College. We offer a wide range of support and resources. Once enrolled at HLC, more information regarding the resources on offer is available by logging into the Moodle LRC page or by using one of our catalogue computers. Moodle is the College’s internal course support and student information website. It is accessed automatically in the College or externally. It enables interactive learning for students, both in and out of the College. There is also a copy print service offering a range of services to students including copying, binding, printing and laminating. Stationery such as pens, memory sticks, folders and paper can also be purchased. The Study Centre HLC is committed to supporting any student in need of additional support with their studies, to enable them to reach their full potential. The College has a dedicated team in place to support students with diverse needs including: dyslexia, mental health difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, visual and hearing impairment, mobility difficulties, general learning difficulties and medical conditions. We offer a daily drop-in at the study centre in the Learning Resource Centre every day. This is available to any student who just needs that little bit of extra help. Complaints Procedure HLC works hard to ensure that your time here as a student is a positive and enjoyable experience. However, we recognise that sometimes things go wrong and you may wish to make a complaint. To burn off some excess energy, the College has an agreement with Hereford Sixth Form College, which allows students to use its ‘Sixth Sense’ gym facilities at discounted rates. Nursery HLC’s Hereford Campus has an onsite nursery with places for 35 children between the ages of six months and five years. Students are able to study in the knowledge that their children are cared for by qualified and experienced staff. This is a provision of the highest quality and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage to work towards all children’s individual needs. Refreshment Facilities at the Hereford Campus There are a number of facilities providing a wide range of hot and cold refreshments on the ground floor of the LRC, Business and Technology Centre and Starbucks is situated next to Reception. The Cider Orchard Restaurant is situated in the Community Studies Building at the Hereford Campus. It is HLC’s training restaurant and has a fantastic menu to choose from, ranging from the very latest fine dining trends to favourite traditional dishes. Tea, coffee, cakes and lunches are available most week days and dinner is available on Wednesday evenings. The restaurant is open to students, staff and the public. All dishes are offered at very reasonable prices. Equality & Diversity ‘Equality’ means treating all groups of people fairly, providing equality of opportunity and removing barriers to success. It is not about treating everybody the same – different people have different needs. For example, making reasonable adjustments for people with a disability (like providing additional time in exams for students with dyslexia) removes barriers to equality of opportunity and helps prevent discrimination. The College receives some funding from the Government to to a friend support student study and this varies depending on the course being studied, the student’s age and their level of study. Because of this, there are some fees that the College may have to pass on to students. Please note: costs on course pages are for guidance purposes only and should be checked prior to enrolment.

Below is an outline of how students may be able to receive help with the costs of courses. For further help, please contact the Enquiries Team on 0800 032 1986 or at enquiries@hlcollege.ac.uk. Are you aged between 16 to 19 years on 31 August? For students who enrol on their further education, full-time course before their 19th birthday or are continuing to attend a course they began before turning 19, there are no tuition or examination fees. However, other fees for example, covering certification, materials, necessary equipment and trips may still apply. Are you aged 19 or over? If you are aged 19 or over at the start of your course then tuition fees will vary. As everyone has individual circumstances then the best way to work out the fees relevant to you is to call and speak to our Enquiries Team on 0800 032 1986. It will also be helpful for you to read through the following information on this page regarding ‘Fee Reductions for Adults’, the ‘19+ Advanced Learner Loan’ and ‘Financial Assistance’. Fee Reductions for Adults Adults (aged 19 years or over) undertaking courses funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency may be entitled to reduced course fees if they meet the following criteria: • Adults (aged 19 to 23 years) wishing to study at: • Level 2 who do not have a first full Level 2 qualification (ie do not have 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C (grades 4-9), an NVQ at Level 2 or an equivalent qualification); or • Level 3 who do not have a first full Level 3 qualification (ie do not have 2 or more A’ Level passes or 4 or fewer AS Level qualifications, an NVQ at Level 3 or equivalent) 18

Valid documentary evidence of any qualifying benefits received must be provided in order for fee reduction to be allowed. Advanced Learner Loan (19+) Advanced Learner Loans provide financial support for those aged 19 years and above to access some advanced (Level 3) and higher (Level 4) further education courses. These loans operate in a similar manner to those available in higher education for tuition costs, and are managed by the Student Loans Company. This means that rather than an individual having to pay for YouTube

their course upfront they have the option of accessing an advanced student loan. Students can apply from 1st April 2020 for courses starting on or after 1st August 2020. It’s easy to apply, household income isn’t considered and there’s no credit check. Students will not have to pay anything back until they finish their course and their income is over £25,000 a year. Financial Assistance Means-tested support funds exist for students who would otherwise be prevented from college participation by financial barriers. Qualifying schemes currently available are: • 16 -19 Bursary Fund – for students under 19 years on 31st August 2020 • Adult Bursary Fund – for students aged 19 or over studying at Levels 3 or 4 (normally for those who have been accepted for an Advanced Learner Loan) • 19 + Discretionary Learner Support – for all other adult students studying up to and including Level 2, and at Level 3 if they qualify for reduced fees. INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS The College is encouraging Level 3 students to take part in a minimum of 45-days of industry placement. The idea is for you to build and develop your skills in a genuine working environment, taking the theoretical knowledge of your course and putting this into practice. Your placements will take place outside of your normal college days, which may be one or two days a week, or in blocks. What are the Benefits of Industry Placements for you? • Employers are always keen to take on workers with some experience under their belt, which can be difficult straight after finishing your qualification. With an industry placement you can add this to your CV and stand out from other candidates. • An industry placement will offer you the chance to learn more transferable and industrial skills from the industry’s experts. • If you make a good impression on the employer, they may be interested in taking you on as a paid employee, either on a part-time basis, or as an apprentice. • Experience life in a real working environment. • This placement could be the first stepping stone to your future career.

Tips for finding your Industry Placement • Utilise your connections – Speak to your friends and family, tutors, careers advisors or neighbours, they may know of somewhere suitable for you to enquire about a placement. • Search your local area – Have a look around your local area for businesses that you may not know about, newspapers are also a good way to find local employers. • Try a different angle – You could try looking for part-time vacancies in your chosen industry, you could get a work experience trial which leads on to employment. • Leave your details – Some employers may not be in a position to take you on for a placement, but leave your contact details with them, as their situation may change. • Make notes – Ensure that you know what you would like to ask before phoning, note who it is you have been speaking with, and any other relevant information during the call.

• Aim for the top – When contacting companies, try to speak to the Manager, or the Human Resources (HR) department if it’s a larger company. • Keep Trying – Don’t be discouraged if you get turned down, don’t worry, just keep on looking. • Be prepared – When contacting employers, ensure you have your CV at the ready, including your skills and experience, these can serve as prompts during a conversation. • Always make a good impression – Ensure that you are polite and respectful when talking with employers, they are much more likely to remember you. • Look online – Businesses may have a section on their website where you can apply for work experience or voluntary work.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a paid job with an accompanying skills development programme which allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal ‘off-the-job’ training and the opportunity to practise and embed new skills in a real work context. So, not only will you gain valuable experience, you will also be learning and earning at the same time.

Apprenticeships have been designed by employers to meet employers’ needs for a particular sector or job role. Each apprenticeship defines the skills, knowledge, behaviours and formal qualifications that the apprentice needs to acquire in order to become competent in their chosen field, and to be awarded the status of fully qualified apprentice. Apprenticeships are nationally recognised as a fantastic pathway into the career of your choice and HLC now offers apprenticeships in almost all industries. What levels of apprenticeship are available? There are three levels of apprenticeships available for those aged 16 and over, dependent on the level and responsibility of the job role. Intermediate Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes) Intermediate Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 2 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Intermediate Apprenticeship may allow progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. To start an Intermediate Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five GCSEs (grade E/grade 2 or above). Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A Level passes) Advanced apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 3 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Advanced Apprenticeship may allow progression onto a Higher Apprenticeship. To start an Advanced Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five good GCSEs (grade C/grade 4 or above) or have successfully completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship.

Higher & Degree Apprenticeships Higher and Degree Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 4 or above (relevant to the occupational sector or job role), and as defined by the Framework or Standard. Higher Apprenticeships at Level 4 and 5 can allow progression on to university degrees, and Degree Apprenticeships are now becoming more widely available in many sectors. To start a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have a relevant Level 3 vocational qualification or three good A Levels, or have completed a relevant Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. How long is an apprenticeship? The minimum length of an apprenticeship is 12 months, but some apprenticeships will be designed to last two, three or four years. This will depend on the Framework or Standard being followed, the level of apprenticeship, the specific occupational area/sector and the prior skill levels of the apprentice. What can I do after I complete my apprenticeship? There are a number of routes that you can take after an apprenticeship. You can use the skills that you have developed to carry on in employment. You can also continue with the apprenticeship scheme to progress to the next level of apprenticeship, such as an Advanced Apprenticeship or a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship.

How to apply and find an employer and get an apprenticeship So you’ve chosen an industry and you think an apprenticeship might be for you. What next? You need an employer and there are a few ways to get one: 1 Check our online vacancies page A continually updated list of apprenticeship vacancies are available on our website. It has all the info you need to know, like the name of the company, where the job is, what it involves and your weekly wage. 2 Approach an employer directly You can contact an employer to see if they would like to take you on as an apprentice. They might not know that they need an apprentice until you contact them! Remember that you are hoping that they will take you on as an employee, so act professionally and make a good impression. If you can, find out a bit about the company first by visiting their website and preparing what you want to say. Jonna Munday First year Forest Operative, Harvesting Pathway “Forestry has always been a huge part of my family life and I wanted to continue this, as my parents work in both logging and basket weaving. I am local to the area and wanted to go straight from school into an apprenticeship at the College, to get stuck straight into work. I didn’t enjoy school very much and prefer the flexibility of learning on the job, rather than sitting in a classroom environment. I went to the Open Event at the Holme Lacy Campus and decided that forestry was the route that I wanted to pursue. The tutors at the College are always supportive and I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who wants to learn a skill on the job. My apprenticeship is based at Birchwood Forestry in Sollers Hope, not too far from the Holme Lacy Campus. I enjoy running the kiln and being in the woods, it’s great to be out in the countryside all day. I find the working days enjoyable and I have already learnt so much in the position. My plans are to continue in the forestry industry and potentially set up my own business in the future.”

Each year the College celebrates the achievements of apprentices and their employers in the Apprenticeship Awards. Nicholas Cornock from H.R. Edwards & Son was named the College’s ‘Apprentice of the Year’ and heating and plumbing business Grange Heating was awarded ‘Employer of the Year’. Farm owner Andrew Edwards commented, “Except for the previous 2 years I had always managed the poultry farm on my own, but when the opportunity came along to have an extra pair of hands in the form of an apprentice, it was the best thing I could have done. It’s not your stereotypical farm role here, and it is important to have the right attitude and work ethic for the job. That is difficult to find in someone ready-made for the role, which is where the apprenticeship works, as you can train someone with the right attitude, and that’s where Nick fitted in perfectly. Grange Heating has had in excess of 20 apprentices over the year, and company director Ewen Grange attributes this to their impressive growth: “We have a particular ethos and culture here at Grange, to make the customer feel special and important, building a rapport is just as important as upholding our standards. With an apprentice we can build this thinking into their training, alongside the skills of the trade they are learning. It’s through this method we’ve been able to grow Grange to the size it is today. Our apprentices stay on with us once they’re qualified as senior engineers, those that have moved on have set-up on their own, and I still keep in touch with them on a regular basis. Fast-tracking through the apprenticeship, Nick was able to complete his level 2 qualification in just over 12 months, developing the skills and knowledge necessary to work on the farm, including additional qualifications in machinery operation and pesticide application. He now lives on-site, as the farm’s Assistant Manager. “I wanted to start an apprenticeship as it would enable me to earn and learn at the same time, Andrew gave me that opportunity and it was everything I wanted and more. I didn’t have to spend my time in a classroom; in my case the tutor from the College came to me. He ensured that what I was learning was not only in line with the qualification, but also made sense for the job I was doing. This was important for me, as it meant I was learning useful skills for now and the future, also rather than having to write essays on random subjects, I was able to evidence my ability through the work I was already doing.” For enquiries or advice

Access to Higher Education Level 3 This is a life-changing and academic preparatory course for progression to university-level study.

This course offers an alternative route to A Levels and BTEC Level 3 courses and has successfully launched many students into a variety of courses and careers. Students on this course achieve consistently high grades year-on-year. There is an emphasis on building your confidence and the course design takes into consideration the possibility that many students may not have been in full-time education for some time. You will find that you gain a high level of support from both the teaching team and from other members of the group. This course will open doors to university-level qualifications and will prepare you for studying at this level. Teaching hours are designed to be family friendly. Assessments take a variety of forms, including essays, projects, oral presentations and open and closed book examinations. The course is credit based; you must achieve 60 Level 3 credits to pass the course, 45 of which will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Universities make offers based on grade achievement. Entry Requirements • Grade 4 (grade C) or higher in GCSE English language and GCSE maths (some universities will accept functional skills level 2 please discuss at interview) • Experience of life outside full-time education • The motivation and determination to succeed on an intensive programme Progression If you complete the Health Professionals Diploma you may apply for degree courses leading to careers in the health professions, including nursing, midwifery, paramedic science and occupational therapy. If you complete the Social Sciences and Humanities Diploma you may apply for initial teacher training courses and other degrees in education, humanities and social sciences.

This course is designed for any individual who has a passion for beauty therapy and high standards of customer service. This course is designed to develop your practical beauty therapy skills in the College’s superb commercial training salons and clinic. Previous students have progressed to a range of exciting careers including running their own successful salons and providing treatments on cruise ships across the globe. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Students had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of JLR’s stunning state-of-the-art production facility in Solihull. They saw first-hand the production of vehicles using robots, and learning how logistically sleek their business is – 1000 deliveries a day on site of which the parts are fixed onto the vehicles within four hours of delivery! The group also received information about work experience placements and advanced apprenticeship programmes. Oaker Wood Leisure Effective team working is a key skill of any successful business. Therefore, students start the year with a focus on developing this. Childcare – Early Years Educator Level 3 Become a qualified Early Years Educator with extensive work experience and the option to progress to university-level courses.

This course gives you a truly insightful experience into the childcare sector with a variety of mandatory placements in different settings over two years, including full support and visits from our qualified team. You will also have the opportunity to achieve Emergency Paediatric First Aid and Food Hygiene - invaluable in employment. This qualification prepares you to work unsupervised, or in a supervisory capacity, with children and their families in a variety of environments within the sector of children’s services. GAME DEVELOPMENT Game development has exploded over the last few years and now it seems like everyone is making a video game. You’ve got big studios full of hundreds of people working on one blockbuster and then you’ve got small teams making incredibly unique games. There are now more people in independent game development than ever before. This is an amazing thing, because everyone brings their unique experience and sensibilities to game design. The more people who start making games and sharing their individual voices, the more games will evolve in new and exciting directions. Believe it or not, this can involve you. You will be developing your own game in code, enabling you to see the fundamental basics at the heart of game development. Shown here are just a few examples of last year’s Level 3 games which involved the processes of story boarding and JavaScript development. The games are web-based and can run across multiple devices and apps, giving you the opportunity to see how your future games will get out into the real world. The vision of the game design has to be created before anybody can actually play the game itself, and the skill of the programmer dictates how far that vision becomes a reality. This year, students will have the additional consideration of VR (Virtual Reality) gameplay which is becoming much more widespread. The College has recently made an investment in VR equipment and students will be able to explore it further by progressing to the Level 5 HND in Computer & Systems Development at the College. Computing Level 3 Equivalent to three A Levels, this is the latest study of current cyber security, games development, networking and hardware.

This advanced level vocational course involves theoretical and practical study of both computer and IT related topics. Previous students have progressed to universities such as King’s College, the University of Lincoln and the University of Derby to study degree courses in computer gaming, ethical hacking and digital forensics. Forming part of our STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) provision, it offers the opportunity to achieve internationally recognised qualifications whilst learning in our well-equipped, specialist IT teaching rooms. Electrical Installation Level 1 This course includes basic knowledge and craft skills of electrical installation.

This course is designed to give you an introduction to electrical installation. The qualification has mandatory and optional units. You will spend one day a week in our specialist practical workshops, developing the hand skills and techniques necessary for successful progression to a relevant Level 2 course of your chosen specialism (often electrical installation). You will spend the rest of your time gaining the essential theoretical knowledge which will underpin your future career and study choices. Many electricians progress to design, consultancy, teaching and management, making the building services industry a career with a wide range of future pathways. Robert Ralph Engineering Level 3 “I decided to follow a career in engineering after seeing the RAF Engineering stand at a careers event at my school, and the Level 3 Engineering course was the natural choice for me at Herefordshire & Ludlow College. It was a really interesting course with plenty of hands-on experience and practical lessons. It gave me a good basis in all aspects of engineering from milling and turning to CAD design and electrical, which I chose to specialise in. The staff are really approachable and you can always ask for help. They are really friendly too and you can have a laugh and a joke with them, which really makes a difference to your learning environment. There is a good range of engineering equipment to use at the College, which helps in taking the theoretical lessons into practical. After finishing my Level 3 Engineering course, I completed an apprenticeship and I’m now just finishing the Electrical Engineering HNC at the College. Looking forward, I am going to focus on working in my current role at Henry Weston’s Cider, as a Maintenance Engineer.”

Engineering Level 3 Broaden your horizons for careers and degree-level study in computer aided manufacturing, product design, aerospace, electronics, electrical engineering, or the automotive industry. Foundation Studies – Skills for Working Life Entry Levels 2 & 3 A supported introduction to the world of employment and college life, including life skills, sports, social skills, English, maths and games. As well as learning a variety of useful life skills, including gardening, catering and hospitality, car maintenance and household DIY, you will also be involved in a range of wider activities, such as a youth enterprise scheme where you run your own business as part of a group. Foundation Studies – Employability Skills Level 1 & Level 2 Develop your confidence and basic skills for progression into employment or further study.

Many of our students have commented that studying these courses at the College is ‘very different from school’. They have enjoyed learning, have gained confidence and are respected as individuals. They also enjoy the weekly opportunities to socialise and be active. Typical activities include playing football, snooker and pool, taking part in boxing training sessions or just going for a coffee and socialising. Furniture Making Level 2 A highly-skilled and specialist timber craft using design processes, technical drawings and workshop geometry.

You will learn the skills to make well designed and beautifully executed furniture in the College’s purpose built workshop. The focus of the Level 2 qualification is to expertly guide you through the making process, using both traditional and modern methods. These will include the use of machinery and power tools, as well as hand-based techniques. Luke Staples – Furniture Design and Making Level 3 “I started out studying Motor Vehicle Engineering, however when I saw the furniture workshops at the College I began to change my career direction. I was inspired by a huge, wooden table which I saw being made in the workshop, and I applied for the course. My Dad is a carpenter and I work with him and my brother in his workshop, so my creative nature definitely runs in the family. I find that I learn so much better in a practical environment and decided that A-Levels were not the route I wanted to go down. I am not an academic sort of person and don’t enjoy sitting in a classroom, so I really enjoy my course as I am able to learn while going through the motions. The course is hands-on and creative, which really suites my learning style. My favourite project has been the ash table I worked on last year, as I was able to get to grips with some real woodwork which I really enjoyed. I am currently working on a walnut vanity cabinet, which is another exciting material to work with. When I leave college I already have a job to move on to, at a bespoke wooden furniture company called Shaker of Malvern.”

Furniture Design & Making Level 3 Explore contemporary furniture design and practical craftsmanship with a view to progressing to related university-level courses or employment in this creative industry. You will be designing and making your own furniture using modern design principles and techniques which are taught alongside traditional approaches. The design element will become more of a focus with greater thought and attention to producing highly unique and innovative pieces of furniture. Technical and presentation drawing skills are refined to better promote your ideas and you will explore modern manufacturing practices such as estimating and developing a business. Your studies will also include visits to local furniture-making workshops, museums and specialist exhibitions. This course includes the development of theoretical knowledge, but the main emphasis is on learning by doing. Tutors who are experts in their craft, combined with purpose-built workshops, have led to overwhelmingly high success rates in recent years. Hairdressing Level 1 Learn the essential skills of hairdressing, barbering and the beauty sector.

Learning in the College’s up-to-date and industry-standard salon, Eden, you will develop the essential basic skills to discover your career in the hair and beauty sector. Eden is a working salon open to members of the public, providing you with a real working environment and allowing you to gain a sense of how it will feel to work in the industry. The broad range of knowledge and skills gained will enable you either to seek employment or to progress to a relevant Level 2 course. You will improve your English and maths as well as developing your confidence in your ability to progress. There is an emphasis on supporting you in becoming an independent learner through individual planning, target setting and development. If you enjoy meeting people and have a confident and outgoing personality then studying hairdressing is an excellent choice. Connor Doyle Hair Level 2 Apprenticeship Connor Doyle, Level 2 Hair Professional Apprenticeship at Mane Salon, Leominster. Originally coming to Herefordshire & Ludlow College on the Level 2 Motor Vehicle course, Connor moved on to the Level 2 Hair Professional Apprenticeship, working at Mane Salon, in Leominster. Currently in the second year of his Level 2 apprenticeship, Connor is thinking about his next steps. “After finishing my Motor Vehicle course, I decided that I wanted to become a barber, but after speaking with Tash (owner of Mane Salon), she convinced me to go for the full Hair Professional route, as this would give me more flexibility down the line. It certainly made sense, rather than limiting me to half the potential customer base at a later date, so now as well as learning how to do traditional barber cuts, I’m also learning how to cut and colour women’s hair too. It’s certainly not a decision I regret, especially going down the route of an apprenticeship. While you can learn in a classroom, I find I can learn so much more on the shop floor. Speaking to clients helps to build your social skills, which is an important part of the job. Watching other colleagues helps me to learn new techniques and methods too. One of the other obvious benefits is that I’m earning alongside building my skills, and at the end of my two years, I’ll have two years of experience too. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship route to others; you can learn from so many different avenues, not just a classroom, and it allows you to truly build your own style and skills. Now I just need to consider which apprenticeship I progress onto Hair Professional Level 3, or move on to the Level 3 in Barbering.”

Hairdressing Level 3 Perfecting your own creative direction with dynamic cutting, colouring and hair extensions.

You will have the opportunity to develop and update your technical skills in advanced colouring, colour correction, hair extension, advanced cutting and long hair. Whilst benefiting from the extra enrichment of industry workshops, guest speakers and industry trips, you will also be involved with local and national competitions, giving you the opportunity to explore and create the latest in avant-garde and contemporary styling. Designed as a practical course based in our commercial salon, your learning will be underpinned by essential theoretical learning and an insight into the financial responsibility of running a business. This is an intensive course, which places high demands on the individual with regard to the level of self-motivation, dedication and enthusiasm required. Health and Social Care Level 3 An advancement of your professional, practical and academic skills, to progress you to university-level courses or in to the industry.

This inspirational and inclusive course addresses the national occupational standards in health and social care. With a supportive and creative approach to independent learning it enhances current working practices regarding broad social and health concerns in a professional context. You will also have the opportunity to use a variety of specialist equipment - such as ageing suits and blood pressure monitors - in order to broaden your awareness of other people’s needs. Hospitality and Professional Cookery (Introduction) Level 1 This course takes you through your first steps in front of house service and the essential basics of professional cookery skills. This course provides you with an introductory pathway which can take you through to advanced level study and on to fulfil your ambitions in either specialism: front of house or in the kitchen. Hospitality and Catering Level 2 This course expands your professional front of house service abilities whilst developing your creative and contemporary cookery techniques.

This course delivers the practical and theoretical knowledge required to succeed and progress within the industry. Not only will you cook and prepare food in our fully-equipped, industry-standard kitchens, you will also learn how to serve guests to a high standard in our training restaurant, which is open to members of the public. Furthermore, you will participate in local and national competitions, pushing your skills to new heights. Cory Harper Level 2 Catering Apprentice “I became interested in catering after starting a part-time job at The Angel Inn, Grosmont. I began working there as a waiter, however started to help in the kitchen and the idea of an apprenticeship was discussed. I have found that I enjoy the balance that an apprenticeship offers, as I can learn new skills during my day at college and on the job. We are given a really good balance of theory and practical, and what we learn to do in college, we can apply to our real jobs. Not only do we learn from the tutors; some of us work in pubs, others in restaurants, and it means there’s a good mix of different styles of food to suit the clientele, so we learn a lot from each other too. I would really recommend pursuing catering if someone is considering it. Catering is a really hands-on profession and the courses at the College give you all of the skills you will need to succeed. The facilities are great and the teaching staff are always on hand to help if you need them.”

Hospitality and Catering – Professional Cookery Level 3 Focus and perfect your creative cookery skills for high standard contemporary catering.

You will gain advanced skills and techniques in the College’s well equipped training kitchens, producing a broad variety of speciality foods, ranging from patisserie and petit fours to shellfish and vegetarian dishes. Written assignments will introduce the theories of health and safety, food safety, gastronomy, sourcing of food and product development. Previous work experience opportunities include top establishments, such as Simpsons in Birmingham, La Becasse in Ludlow and the Hilton in Cardiff. This experience broadens your knowledge, skills and product development. Students are also encouraged to enter national competitions, which give them a fantastic insight into an intense and creative industry. Depending on your aspirations, this course provides a pathway through the industry and can lead to more advanced levels of study. It will open up a wide variety of opportunities, giving you the skills and stamina to carve your own career in this fast-paced industry.

Hospitality and Catering – Food and Beverage Service Supervision Level 3 Focus and perfect your supervisory skills for a high standard of hospitality service

The candidates are given the opportunity to learn, develop and practice their skills required for employment and/or career progression. You will practice your supervisory skills within the Cider Orchard restaurant at the college. The qualification covers all aspects of food and beverage service and skills can be fully developed using the fully equipped restaurant. Food service is tailored to a high standard ensuring a smooth transition into employment or higher education. Massage Therapies Level 3 You will learn professional and holistic massage techniques including Indian head, body and stone massage.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills to a high level of occupational ability and to enable you to perform your own salon services. Practical training is undertaken in a professional working environment in our superb commercial training salons and clinic, Eden. You will develop a sound knowledge of how to monitor and maintain health and safety practices in a salon environment; promote client care and effective communications. You will also learn how to maintain personal health and well-being, as well as exploring the origins of massage and the principles of complementary and alternative medicine. There is an option to study additional certificates in Bamboo Massage, though these are at an additional cost and are not part of the formal Level 3 qualification structure. Motor Vehicle Level 1 An introduction to the repair techniques required for the motor vehicle repair industry and for further study or an apprenticeship.

You will use our fully-equipped workshop and fleet of vehicles to gain an insight into the knowledge and skills required in the motor vehicle repair industry. This introduction will prepare you for progression to the Level 2 and 3 qualifications (full-time or as an apprentice) where you will be using our modern diagnostic scan-tools, rolling road, wheel alignment systems, MOT facilities, and dedicated classrooms. Working in our purpose-built workshop, you will repair a range of vehicles under expert tuition from our highly experienced teaching staff. You will also gain a broad understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage. Your further study in this area, at Level 2 and above, will qualify you for working in all different areas of the motor vehicle industry.

Motor Vehicle Level 2 Learn the latest skills in the removal and fitting of chassis, electrical and engine components in a modern motor vehicle repair environment.

You will be provided with the essential knowledge and skills required for service technicians working on light vehicles, including electric and hybrids, in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. You will focus on the maintenance, removal and fitting of components, underpinned by a detailed theoretical knowledge of the subject. There are a growing number of vehicles on the road with complex engine and chassis management systems. As a result, there is a growing need for skilled craftspeople, technicians and competent motor vehicle engineers. Progression paths in this industry are numerous and varied, including routes into motorsport engineering. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Motor Vehicle Level 3 Explore the diagnosis of complex faults in engines, chassis and electrical systems using the latest diagnostic scan-tools, rolling road, wheel alignment systems and MOT facilities. You will be using your keen interest in this industry and your theoretical problem solving skills to work in our extensive purpose-built workshops. Using our modern diagnostic scan tools, rolling road, wheel alignment systems, MOT facilities, and dedicated classrooms, you will test and repair a range of vehicles and diagnose complex system faults. This Level 3 qualification covers the technical needs for today’s motor vehicle repair industry, focusing on the diagnosis of complex faults in engines, chassis and electrical systems. Plumbing Level 1 This course includes domestic and industrial pipework fabrication as well as an introduction to electrical installation.

This course is designed to give you an introduction to plumbing, heating, electrical installation and other building services trades. You will also cover subjects such as refrigeration and air conditioning, which will provide a solid grounding for the general construction trades. You will spend one day a week in our specialist practical workshops, developing the hand skills and techniques necessary for successful progression to a relevant Level 2 course of your chosen specialism (plumbing or electrical installation), employment in the building services industry or working as an apprentice. You will spend the rest of your time gaining the essential theoretical knowledge which will underpin your future career and study choices. Plumbing Level 2 You will be taught plumbing design and installation by experienced tutors for progression into apprenticeships and the industry.

The need for good, qualified tradespeople is ever present in the plumbing industry. Good plumbers are still highly sought after and many go on to start and grow successful businesses. You will gain a range of specialist skills to enable you to progress to an apprenticeship and become fully qualified, covering hot and cold water systems as well as heating systems and basic electrics. You will develop your skills in practical problem solving, allowing you to install bathrooms, hot water systems and sanitary pipework. You will also develop the attributes needed to be a successful apprentice. Students are taught in our state-of-theart workshops by our expert tutors, who are highly experienced in the plumbing and gas industry.

Public Services Level 2 This course includes preparatory practical training and theoretical study to progress in the public services industry including the police, armed forces, fire service and ambulance service. This outstanding practical course will help you develop the skills necessary for working within the uniformed public services. You’ll benefit from a wide range of public service-related outdoor and adventurous activities which could include gorge walking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and hill walking. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in an overnight residential, participate in ongoing fitness training (relevant to public service entrance tests), learn self-defence and conflict management, as well as gain knowledge from visits to a diverse range of public sectors. Your tutors work closely with the police, fire and ambulance services as well as the armed forces to ensure that you receive relevant and up-to-date teaching. You will have the opportunity to develop key attributes, such as communication skills, flexibility, teamwork skills and the ability to think and work independently. Public Services Level 3 This course is equivalent to three A Levels and will give you a thorough and practical insight into the public services sector.

This course will prepare you for the mental and physical demands of life in the services, whether you decide to go straight into industry or continue to university-level study. You’ll benefit from being taught by professionals with years of service in the uniformed public services and who still work in close collaboration with the police, fire and ambulance services. Designed to provide highly specialised work related knowledge, you will develop the understanding and skills sought by employers in a wide range of uniformed public services. EXPLORE WITH PUBLIC SERVICES The First Term The first term includes a number of icebreaking activities, helping the students to get to know each other and discover more about teamwork and the skills required. Activities may include: • Canoeing/Kayaking • Gorge Walking • Initiative Exercises Leadership and Teamwork Unit We expect students to take part in a two-day army work experience residential as part of the Discipline, Leadership and Teamwork Unit. During this trip the students will be put through a variety of physical and personal challenges, to develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills. Fitness Preparation for the Uniformed Public Services As part of their course, students take part in a range of physical and sporting activities that best prepare them for the physical demands of a career in the public services. Fitness training, testing and military self-defence are regularly used to ensure individual personal development, including collaborations with Hereford Combat Academy and CrossFit Hereford. Shrewsbury Prison A visit to Shrewsbury’s ‘The Dana’ Prison helps students understand how the justice system used to be, and how it has changed over the centuries, from Victoria prisoners, to the history of public executions. London Trip Last year students went to visit the Houses of Parliament and the London Dungeon, as part of their study programme. The London Dungeon gave a good insight into the past, and the way that the justice system has changed over the years. The parliament trip explores how governments are run and the students took part in proposing their own laws. They later wrote their own policies and presented them to the Mayor of Hereford.

Work Experience Students will work with and support various organisations during their time on the course. There is a unit solely based on volunteering and making the community we live in a safer place. The public service sector is ever-changing and recently voluntary positions have become inroads to gaining full-time employment within the uniformed services. Course content is reflective of current industry practice and the army residential is 30 hours of work experience. Outdoor Activities Our hands-on approach to the practical units has allowed our students to gain skills that have enabled them to stand out during the application process for the armed forces and police specials. Several of our recent cohorts of students are now serving within their chosen service.

Water-based Activities Kayaking and Canoeing Last year, 50 students took part in a trip to Cardiff International White Water Centre, where they took part in rafting and indoor surfing. The aim is to build up water-based confidence and get a taste of this exciting and dynamic environment. The water based unit aims to develop essential public service foundation rescue skills, using the same venues as the Hereford White Water Fire Brigade Response Team. Many of the students will also achieve their BCU 2 star award, which will also open up opportunities for employment in the outdoor industry. Developing your water skills will improve your water confidence, as well as complement your CV.

Land-based Activities Climbing Students visit Gloucester, Llangorse, Cardiff and Hereford indoor climbing centre, to develop climbing and belaying skills, build trust in their team mates, overcome fears and log experience towards completing the ‘Climbing Wall Award’ (CWA) training.

Caving Students visit a variety of caves to cater for all abilities and all comfort zones. There are passages to walk down and explore, and for those that want more, there are challenges to crawl along and squeeze through along the way. You will also develop some essential rope skills for rescuing trapped or injured cavers, working alongside a member of cave rescue. Caving is excellent for overcoming mental fears of tight spaces and big caves allow the students to push their comfort zones as far as possible. This is essential development for the public services when related to smoke-filled rooms, riot squads and army operations. Wales During the second year our students took part in both day and overnight expeditions in Wales. The skills covered count towards national governing body qualifications, such as, the Lowland Leader or Mountain Leader, which can lead to professional work in a growing industry. Taught by professional outdoor instructors, students developed skills such as the ability to accurately read a map, use a compass and be able to plan and undertake a route.

Technical Diploma in Sport Level 2 Develop your sport and fitness skills, including coaching, testing and specialist pathways.

Making use of your free membership of the Point4 (gym, spa and leisure facilities), you will extend your skills in a diverse range of team and individual sporting activities giving you an overall grounding in sport and fitness. You can also gain a range of further qualifications, such as sports coaching and first aid, as well as English and maths. Your theoretical study will cover a wide variety of subjects, enhancing your understanding of your physical performance and preparing you for further study. This will include areas such as fitness testing and development, anatomy and physiology, effects of exercise on the body, planning and leading sport activities and injury in sport. You can choose to take part in a Football Training Pathway, Netball Training Pathway or follow a Fitness Pathway. Sport - Fitness Services Level 3 A new and exciting course that provides students with the experience and qualifications to work in the leisure industry as Fitness Instructors (accepted and supported by the Register of Exercise Professionals - REPs). You will expand your travel experiences by enjoying and learning through many UK visits as well as having the opportunity to take part in a cabin crew training day at either British Airways or Flybe. This is a great opportunity for you to develop your skills through practical demonstrations and hands-on experiences. This course has been designed to develop the vocational skills which are needed for a career in the travel and tourism sector and you also have the option of an overnight trip. In previous years Dublin has been a popular destination. Spain Second year Level 3 students were tasked with organising an amazing trip to Spain for both themselves and the first year students in May 2018. The excited group of over 50 students departed from Birmingham Airport and arrived at Barcelona Airport to lovely sunny weather, before commencing their 50-minute coach journey to a lovely hotel set in La Pineda. The trip was spent visiting the beautiful city of Barcelona, where they visited Las Ramblas, cathedrals and Barcelona FC Nu Camp football stadium. To finish off the trip, they spent a day visiting Salou’s theme park. Team building games took place every evening, the highlight of which was a fashion show with outfits designed by each team as part of the unit, ‘Entertainment for Holidaymakers’. New York & Los Angeles Level 3 students took part in these USA overseas experiences as part of their module on long haul travel. This five-day trip included YouTube

scheduled flights and hotel accommodation, as well as numerous visits to famous sights in Los Angeles, the Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’, Santa Monica, Warner Bros Studios, Universal Theme Park and film studio tour. In New York, they visited Central Park, took a horse and carriage, the Empire State Building, Fifth Avenue, 9/11 Memorial and watched an ice hockey game. All of our trips help the students with their assessments, develop confidence, build on knowledge and add to their employability skills. Dublin Our Level 2 students organise an overseas trip to Dublin, as part of their ‘Planning an Event’ unit. A very early departure from Birmingham airport meant we could make the most of our stay. Arriving at our hotel by 10am, we checked in and were ready to explore. The Level 2 group had pre-planned the events for the day which included a visit to Dublin Zoo. The group experienced the best of Ireland’s historical capital including sampling the local food, spending time in the shops, visiting Trinity College and Dublin Castle.

Land-based Studies Level 1 This is a hands-on introduction to animal care and agriculture with educational visits and transferable skills.

You will take part in a variety of exciting practical projects, both on the estate working with cattle and sheep and in the animal care unit with a variety of animals such as rodents, reptiles and birds. There are educational visits to such places as zoological gardens, wildlife parks, farms, agricultural shows or markets. This course provides an ideal introduction to land-based industries, including agriculture and animal care, and will help you decide if these are areas in which you would like to work. It will provide you with the opportunity to gain a variety of transferable skills, such as handling both large and small animals, grooming, conducting health checks, or estate maintenance. You will experience working in a range of environments relevant to the industry and will be taught in both practical and theory-based sessions. Agriculture Level 2 Develop your practical farming skills on the College’s working organic farm, utilising both traditional and modern farming methods.

You will gain practical experience of tractor fieldwork, estate skills and a range of stock tasks, as well as being given an opportunity to visit relevant shows and exhibitions. You can gain certification in one of the following certificates of competence: telehandler, ATV, shearing or tractor driving. You will experience work in a range of agricultural areas through practical sessions on the College farm. This will be underpinned by your theoretical classroom work and backed up with relevant work experience in the industry. Agriculture Level 3 Equivalent to three A Levels, this course provides a route into positions of responsibilities in the industry or progression to relevant university-level courses.

This course is ideal for those working towards positions of responsibility in the agricultural industry and is based on an integration of theoretical and practical lectures backed up by work experience. You will gain an understanding of all aspects of modern farming practices based around our 230 hectare organic farm which will cover a wide range of livestock and arable operations. You will also enjoy a range of trips to various local and national shows and demonstrations. Furthermore, you can gain certification in two of the following certificates of competence: telehandler, tractor driving, ATV, pesticides, shearing and chainsaw. People qualified in this diverse sector are often welcomed by other relate industries because of their broad education, skills, training and experience. Animal Care Level 2 Learn the professional skills necessary to understand the behaviours and enhance the welfare of a broad collection of animals, from common domestic pets to exotic reptiles and birds. This programme is designed to give you a good understanding of how to care for animals, developing your practical skills and helping you to appreciate the extent of this vibrant and growing industry. Learning will be through a combination of classroom-based and practical workshops utilising the campus’s fully-equipped animal care unit. There will be opportunities to visit animal care organisations, including wildlife parks, zoos and small businesses. ANIMAL CARE The animal care department offers a wealth of experience for students hoping to progress to employment in the sector or for those wishing to study related subjects at university. The Animal Care Unit is a valuable resource for students and houses a wide range of animals ranging from exotics such as chameleon and tortoises, to rodents such as hamsters and degus. Students learn a great deal from working practically with the animals and are able to apply their theoretical work to a real animal care environment. Careers Week is an exciting event that gives students the chance to gain an insight into their employment sector. Industry experts are invited to talk to students about their job roles, including how they got to where they are, what they enjoy (as well as what they don’t), and what they recommend to students who are looking to specialise. In addition to their studies and practical work on the Animal Care Unit, students go on all sorts of trips and visits. Animal Management Level 3 This is a specialist course, equivalent to three A Levels, in the welfare, biology and management of a wide range of animals.

This advanced programme will help you learn practical skills and competencies with a broad range of animal collections to prepare you for work or university. Hannah Fortey – Animal Management Level 3 Hannah is a second-year student on the Level 3 Animal Management course. “I have always loved animals from an early age, especially marine life which I took an early interest in when visiting rockpools on holiday. When I left school, I wanted to come to the Holme Lacy Campus to study Animal Management. I considered taking A Levels to study Biology, however it was too broad for my liking. Animal Management has instead allowed me to concentrate solely on the animals. As I finish this course, I’m looking forward to studying Zoology at Aberystwyth University. I have even secured a £1000 bursary from the University for my success in exams. My plans for the future are to complete a masters in Zoology, as I plan to work in marine conservation, in particular to work with whales. The College has been very welcoming to me, especially given that I suffer with ME. The campus is nice and compact, and the tutors are all really nice and supportive too. On the course we have a great mixture of academic learning and practical sessions, getting to work with a wide variety of animals, including the exotics and also the animals down on the farm. I would really recommend this course for anyone who loves animals, or wishes to go into animal management as a career, and the College itself is a great environment to learn in.”

Blacksmithing & Metalworking Level 2 This course is run by the longest established blacksmithing training college in the country, with staff dedicated to providing training for those who wish to work in the various areas of forged iron, ranging from traditional to contemporary design work. This course seeks to lay the foundation for a successful career in forged metalwork and comprehensively teaches the technical skills that are essential to becoming a competent blacksmith. You will benefit from being taught on site by some of the most internationally recognised professional blacksmiths in the industry, this will be supported by gaining work experience with a blacksmith as part of your study programme. There is also the opportunity to enter into competitions, one of these being at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern. High-achieving blacksmiths trained at the College are very well regarded by employers and many subsequently trade in their own right. This subject is an excellent choice for a self-motivated and hard-working person who will be expected to have good hand/ eye coordination and artistic ability in this exciting and growing industry. Blacksmithing & Metalworking Level 3 This course is run by the longest established blacksmithing training college in the country, with staff dedicated to providing training for those who wish to work in the various areas of forged iron, ranging from traditional to contemporary design work. This course will give you an excellent grounding for progression either into industry or onto a relevant universitylevel course. Working in one of the largest blacksmith training facilities in Europe, you will manufacture most of the hand tools required for project work and learn about the properties of materials which blacksmiths use, including those metals less common in blacksmithing such as stainless steel, copper and wrought iron. You’ll be taught by some of the most well-respected professional blacksmiths in the industry worldwide. Farriery Access Level 2 This is a preparatory course in forgework and horse care to give you the required level of skill for entry into the specialist and competitive Apprenticeship in Farriery.

To practise as a farrier you need to be registered with the Worshipful Company of Farriers. To register with them, you will need to successfully complete a recognised Apprenticeship in Farriery and the Worshipful Company of Farriers Diploma. The aim of this course is to provide an entry qualification route so that you can apply for an Apprenticeship in Farriery. Gaining an Apprenticeship in Farriery can be challenging and having basic skills in blacksmithing, welding and equine knowledge can greatly enhance your chances of success. This course offers the expertise of our highly qualified blacksmith, farriery and equine tutors. To gain farriery experience you will be encouraged to organise and undertake a period of work experience with a qualified farrier, which will help reinforce your awareness of farriery as a possible career. Horse Care Level 2 A practical and specialist course for ambitious students who are passionate about horses and wish to follow a career within the equine industry.

An excellent opportunity for you to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of horse care and riding through both practical and theory-based sessions. The course includes valuable work experience which will enable you to develop reliable practical skills in the equine industry and on the College equine yard. All full-time students participate in yard duties throughout the year alongside their main programme of study. A rota is put in place and will include some weekends. Previous students have taken part in many different visits, including to the Horse of the Year Show and Badminton Horse Trials, as well as to various yards, including racing, polo, dressage and natural horsemanship. There are opportunities to gain additional qualifications such as Emergency First Aid at Work, training for BHS Stage exams and the BHS Riding and Road Safety. You will also get the chance to compete on college horses and take part in various events. Alice Booth Horse Management Level 3 Alice came to Herefordshire & Ludlow College from Earl Mortimer College on the Level 3 Horse Management qualification. Nearing the end of the course, Alice is looking to progress on to university to study either veterinary physiotherapy or veterinary nursing. “I really enjoy studying here at the College and especially like all of the scientific modules on the course. I plan to go to university after completing this course and I have found it’s a great alternative to A-Levels. The campus is a beautiful place to study and it’s great that you have the opportunity to do so much practical work, as well as the academic. I would certainly recommend the course to anyone who would like a future working with horses or even animals in general. There are lots of opportunities to gain experience and we do a lot of great study trips too, such as going to Newmarket to visit The British National Racing School.“

Horse Management Level 3 A specialist work-related programme of study, equivalent to three A Levels, that covers key knowledge and practical skills required for a successful career in this amazing industry. This course will teach you how to care for horses up to competition level and give you the opportunity to work at our commercial riding school. The course gives a broad-based and in-depth study of the industry and its various disciplines. We aim to provide the best possible vocational experience for you as well as developing your learning and understanding of equine academia. All full-time students participate in yard duties throughout the year alongside their main programme of study. A rota is put in place and will include some weekends. You will also have the opportunity to organise and run an equine event, as well as to visit Your Horse Live, Badminton Horse Trials and the Horse of the Year Show. Students also attend residential study tours, which include visits to The National Stud, British Racing School, Rossdales Equine Veterinary Hospital, Tattersalls and a study tour to Cirencester. FINDING US HLC has two campuses in Herefordshire: the Hereford Campus is situated near the city centre to the north-east and the Holme Lacy Campus is in a rural setting about 6 miles south-east of Hereford city centre. Ludlow College is situated in Shropshire, just a 20-minute journey from Hereford by train.

Hereford Campus - HR1 1LS This campus is just to the east of the city centre, conveniently close to both the train station and the central bus terminal and is served well by the regular public transport system. If you travel by car please note that a parking permit system operates on campus; full details are available from reception or on our website in ‘Maps & Directions’ under ‘College Information’. Holme Lacy Campus - HR2 6LL This campus is located at the western edge of the village of Holme Lacy, approximately six miles to the south-east of Hereford on the B4399. A bus service operates from Hereford city centre although it is advisable to check times on the Herefordshire Council website. The campus is set above the River Wye in our 257 hectare estate which encompasses a mixed organic working farm, ancient and commercial woodlands and traditional parkland with ponds and streams. It also includes specialist learning facilities and the much acclaimed Straw Bale Café development which has been the centre of focus for its sustainable credentials. INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL STAFF & CAREERS ADVISORS We pride ourselves on maintaining a strong positive relationship with our fellow professionals in schools and in careers services around the area. We recognise the diverse options available to young people. For some, Herefordshire and Ludlow College may be the right answer, for others a different route may be better. Our overriding concern is to make sure that young people make a well-informed decision about their post-GCSE progression.

We also know that every year some school pupils stay on into a sixth-form and then find after a year that they need to change direction. Easing the transition of those Year 12 students is just as important to us as helping Year 11’s who decide going on to College is what best meets their needs. Similarly, our work with 14-16 year olds is a vital part of ensuring all young people can benefit from the widest range of options to help their development. We have set out (see below) some of the ways in which we can work with schools and careers advisors to ensure their pupils arrive at an informed decision.
