Farriery Access Level 2 This is a preparatory course in forgework and horse care to give you the required level of skill for entry into the specialist and competitive Apprenticeship in Farriery.

To practise as a farrier you need to be registered with the Worshipful Company of Farriers. To register with them, you will need to successfully complete a recognised Apprenticeship in Farriery and the Worshipful Company of Farriers Diploma. The aim of this course is to provide an entry qualification route so that you can apply for an Apprenticeship in Farriery. Gaining an Apprenticeship in Farriery can be challenging and having basic skills in blacksmithing, welding and equine knowledge can greatly enhance your chances of success. This course offers the expertise of our highly qualified blacksmith, farriery and equine tutors. To gain farriery experience you will be encouraged to organise and undertake a period of work experience with a qualified farrier, which will help reinforce your awareness of farriery as a possible career. Level 2 Certificate in Horse Care Duration One year Course Content You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below. • Blacksmithing – forging, forming, cutting, joining & tool production • Welding – the application of welding processes • Relevant Statutory Requirements of Health & Safety • Equine Studies – equine biology and horse handling The units listed are provisional and variations may occur. Assessment is done throughout the year, with the NPTC practical forging exam taking place at the end of the academic year along with the theory test. All students are encouraged to participate in working with a qualified farrier. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level. Entry Requirements • Four GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above (to include maths and English) or successful completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification at a Distinction grade. • The new Farriery Apprenticeship Standard is suggesting that you may require GCSE grade 5 for maths and English to be able to undertake the end point assessment (confirmation is expected in summer 2019). • Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area • All farriery apprentices will also need to meet the registration requirements of the Farriery Registration Council (FRC) before you start your Farriery Apprenticeship Standard.

We offer a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Farriery, as a progression from the Level 2 Farriery Access course. Course Content As an employed apprentice you will gain practical skills along with relevant knowledge and understanding including: • Health & safety • Tool making • Handling horses • Horse foot care planning • Trimming hooves • Making horseshoes • Fitting horseshoes • Welding & fabrication Duration and Attendance You will attend college on a block-release attendance pattern, during which time assessment of your progress will be undertaken while you gain knowledge and understanding. You will spend most of your time in the workplace employed as an apprentice. Typical duration of the programme is four years.
