Horse Care Level 2 A practical and specialist course for ambitious students who are passionate about horses and wish to follow a career within the equine industry.
An excellent opportunity for you to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of horse care and riding through both practical and theory-based sessions. The course includes valuable work experience which will enable you to develop reliable practical skills in the equine industry and on the College equine yard. All full-time students participate in yard duties throughout the year alongside their main programme of study. A rota is put in place and will include some weekends. Previous students have taken part in many different visits, including to the Horse of the Year Show and Badminton Horse Trials, as well as to various yards, including racing, polo, dressage and natural horsemanship. There are opportunities to gain additional qualifications such as Emergency First Aid at Work, training for BHS Stage exams and the BHS Riding and Road Safety. You will also get the chance to compete on college horses and take part in various events. Qualification Level 2 Diploma in Horse Care Duration One year Course Content You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below. • Principles of Feeding & Watering • Undertake Routine Stable Duties • Horse Behaviour & Welfare • Riding on the Flat • Maintain Animal Health & Welfare • Introduction to Keeping a Horse at Grass Assessment is continuous, with assignments, projects and practical work. Entry Requirements • Four GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above (to include maths and English) or successful completion of a suitable and relevant Level 1 qualification at a Distinction grade • Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria. Study options may include: • Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma in Horse Management Employment options may include: • Groom in the racing industry • Working in animal welfare organisations • Groom in equine yards
We also offer the following apprenticeships as an alternative to full-time study: • Horse Care, Level 2 • Horse Care and Management, Level 3 Course Content As an employed apprentice you will gain practical skills along with knowledge and understanding relevant to your chosen course, including: • Cleaning and Maintaining Stables • Providing Feed & Water to Horses • Providing Treatment to Horses • Grooming & Maintaining Horses • Handling Horses • Riding Horses • Lunge & Long Rein Horses Duration and Attendance You will spend most of your time in the workplace employed as an apprentice. There will be knowledge workshops planned within your course. You will be expected to attend functional skills classes unless you already have prior achievement. Duration is 12-24 months depending on the level of study.
