Carpentry Level 2 This course will advance your industry skills to professional standards and widen your knowledge of all aspects of site carpentry, including structural carcassing and construction technology. This course emphasises ‘learning by doing’ and will further build your confidence and capabilities in your practical skills, preparing you for either employment or working on-the-job in an apprenticeship. It combines practical sessions in a specialist purpose-built workshop featuring industry-standard equipment dedicated to site carpentry activities to a realistic scale, along with classroom theory lessons. The theory will support the development of industry standard practical skills through such techniques as first fix, second fix and structural carcassing components. You can take part in a variety of site visits to learn more about the industry and the range of career routes available. Qualification City & Guilds Level 2 Construction Diploma in Site Carpentry Duration One year Course Content You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below. Site Carpentry: • Carry out First Fix Operations • Carry out Second Fix Operations • Erecting Structural Carcassing Bench Joinery: • Produce Setting-Out Details • Mark Out from Setting-Out Details • Manufacture Joinery Items • Health, Safety and Welfare in the Construction Industry • Knowledge of Building Methods and Construction Technology Achievement is by continuous assessment of practical units and multiple-choice tests for theory units. Entry Requirements Please note: applicants without suitable experience will normally be advised to commence study at Level 1. • Successful and satisfactory completion of a suitable and relevant Level 1 qualification (e.g. Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery). Alternatively, applicants who can evidence suitable experience or aptitude will also be considered • Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria. Study options may include: • Level 3 Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery • Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry (parttime day release) Employment options may include: • Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship in Bench Joinery or Site Carpentry • Shop Fitting • Heritage Skills, e.g. oak timber framing • Modern Timber Frame House Construction

We also offer the following apprenticeships as an alternative to full-time study: • Site Carpentry Apprenticeship at Levels 2 and 3 • Architectural/Bench Joinery Apprenticeship at Levels 2 and 3 Course Content You will gain practical skills, knowledge, understanding and experience relevant to your chosen apprenticeship route and the job role you have in the workplace. It will take around 24 months to complete the Level 2 Apprenticeship and a further 12-18 months to complete the Level 3 Apprenticeship.
