Cory Harper Level 2 Catering Apprentice “I became interested in catering after starting a part-time job at The Angel Inn, Grosmont. I began working there as a waiter, however started to help in the kitchen and the idea of an apprenticeship was discussed. I have found that I enjoy the balance that an apprenticeship offers, as I can learn new skills during my day at college and on the job. We are given a really good balance of theory and practical, and what we learn to do in college, we can apply to our real jobs. Not only do we learn from the tutors; some of us work in pubs, others in restaurants, and it means there’s a good mix of different styles of food to suit the clientele, so we learn a lot from each other too. I would really recommend pursuing catering if someone is considering it. Catering is a really hands-on profession and the courses at the College give you all of the skills you will need to succeed. The facilities are great and the teaching staff are always on hand to help if you need them.”
