A lot of people have been aeking of late: "What has happened to thc lumber business in California?"
Nothing abnormal; nothing tragic; nothing that might not well have been cxpected. The lumber industry in California is GOING BACK TO WORK. That's all. The day of the SALESMAN hag come back.
For the past two years the lumber business has been so overwhelmingly prosperous in California that, to a very great extent,building material sold itself, prices were not considered a matter of vital importance, and it was largely a matter of delivering the goods and collecting the money.
But the history of the lumber business from its inception until now, shows that it swings up, and it swings down. It has to swing down now and then in order to normalize things. It has to swing back occasionally in order that it may be kept sane. It has to have its setbacks to the end that it may not get out of the reach of the building public. It always HAS swung back. It always WILL.
It is NOT an unhealthy process. Simply unpleasant. It's bitter, but the doctor says ttTake it" t
For lumber to prosper, people must buy homes, and barns, and buildings generally. And regardless of everything else, lumber takes a bump every now and then in order, it would seem, that people could still afford to buy these things.
So, here in California, the lumber setback puts us back to digging, and scratching, and hustling for business again. It won't hurt us. It wiil do us good. People are like hens,'anyway. The scratching the hen does in gathering her food is the thing that keeps her healthy. It isn't much different with humans.
Eating without scratching spoils hens. It spoils a lot of people, also. The lumber business has come mighty easy to a whole lot of people in California for a couple of years. Now we're going back to WORKING and SELLING again.
'We're going back to sitting on the lid, watching the costs, hustling for sales, scrambling for a profit; and the profit will be the more appreciated because we got it that way.
That's all there is to it !
It's nothing to worry over. It can't be Christmas all the time. Only the sluggard and the inefficient will be actually hurt.
We're simply going to say goodby to a period of HIGH pay and LOW workl LO.W efficiency and HIGH remuneration; SMALL selling effort and BfG volume.
The Good Book says that we shall live by the sweat of our brows.
The lumber industry of California is carrying out that program right now, and it won't hurt a bit in the long run.
It's simply a case of plan, work, hustle, create, SELL ! And the chances are that as we sow, "so shall we reap."

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Holmes have returned from a three tnonths' automobile tour of the Southern and Eastern states. They traveled as far east as New'York and among the many things of interest that they visited werc the Palisades on the Hudson, Mammoth Cave of Virginia, and the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Kentucky. On their return west. they came over the Yellowstoni Trail via Yellowstone Park, Spokane, and Porttand. Mr. Holmes is president of the Holmes-Eureka Lumber Co.
I. E. Brink, of the Diamond Match Company, Chico, was a San Francisco visitor over the Fourth of July holidays. He wa.s spending a few days on pleasure and looking over the points of interest in the Bay District.

Announcement hes been made of the marriage of Doroitry Smittr to Malcolm A. Sinclair at the home of the bride on Saturday, June 28 at Santa Cruz. Mrs. Sinclair is the daughter of Judge Smith and a sister of Stanford G. Smith, District Attorney of Santa Cruz County. Mr. Sinclair is a popular lumberman of Santa Cruz and is assistant manager of the Wood Brothers Lumber Co. He is also Secretary of the Coast Counties Lumbermen's Club.
They are spending their honeymoon touring through the Northwest.
Fred Holmes, of the Holmes-Eureka Lumber Co., San Francisco, accompanied by his family, has returned from a pleasant week's vacation at Lake Tahoe. He made the trip to the favorite Sierra resort by automobile.
A. P. Youst, for the past year connected with the A. T. Show Company, I.os Angeles wholesalers, has severed his connection with that concern. and is now in the wholesale sales department of the l{ammond Lumber Company, Los Angeles.
Mr. Sam T. Hayward, vice-president of the Hayward Lumber & Investment Company, and I\{rs. Hayward, are spending three weeks in and around Seattle.

Henry Hink of the Dolbeer-Carson Lumber Co., San Francislo, is vacationing in the Sierras where he expects to do a lot of fishing and enjoy a little outdoor life. While in the mountains, he expects to take off a few days to make an inspection trip through the Fruit Growers Supply Co. and Red River Lumber Co. mills and logging operations. He is accompanied by his family on the trip and will return to San Francisco the later part of the month.
Bert Neylan, San Francisco manager of the Booth-Kelly Lumber Co., is on a three weeks vacation at Silver Lake in the High Sierras, where he expects to enjoy a little fishing and outdoor life. During his absence, "High" Henry, the company's Sacramento Valley representative, is in charge of their San Francisco office.

One of the most enjoyable meetings of the Sacramento Valley Lumbermen's Club was held on Saturday June 2L when'they had their summer picnic at beautiful McKinley Park, Sacramento.
After the luncheon, there was a short business session presided over by L. H. Chapman, president of the club. Applications for membership from White Brothers and J. E. Higgins Lumber Co., both prominent hardwood concerns of San Francisco, were read and admitted to membership in the club. The following telegram was sent to the lumbermen at San Diego where they had assembled for the annual picnic of the California Retail Lumbermen's Association: "Members and ladies of the Sacramento Valley Lumbermen's Association in picnic assembled, send greetings and best wishes from Sacramento the Heart of California to the lumbermen of the South at San Diego. Hope that you have a big day and that we may m-et together at Calaveras Grove in August."
The day was ideal for picnicking and an excellent lunch was served under the shade of the large spreading trees. During the luncheon, a radio concert was enjoyed and a vote of thanks was tendered the Kimball-Upson Co., for their courtesy of installing the radio which provided such dn excellent entertainment.
C. H. Dunton, of the Land Department of the California National Bank, Sacramento, was then introduced and he gave an excellent talk on the World Mining Congress that will be held in Sacramento in September. He said that there would be 3000 delbgates at this Conference. Mr. Dunton also spoke on the development of California and referred to the.part that had been taken by the lumbermen in its progress. M. C. Doane, San Jose; Bert Neylan, San Francisco; and H. C. Clark, Los Angeles, spoke on market conditions. A. B. Wastell, San Franiisco, give an interesting talk on lumber conditions throughout the State and also told of the proposed meeting of the lumbermen of
the State at Calaveras Grove at some time during the month of August.
The next meeting of the Club will be held the third Sattrrday in September.

Mr. Yoeman has been connected with the Whiting Mead Commercial Company, for some years.

"The torvns which are doing the business today are the torvns in which the retailers and contractors are buildirrg homes which can be sold for $4,000 and less. There is a tremendous demdnd for this kind of home and there isn't any reason why they cannot be built in any locality. One trouble is that the average contractor has been working on better homes for so long he has forgotten that houses can be built and put on the market for around $4,000. In this day of specialized building one of the causes of advanced building costs is the fact that builders have gotten away from stock sizes and stock patterns. I suggest you urge through your publications the selling of building material in the shape of modest, low-priced homes."
We agree strongly rvith the gentleman quoted. He says further that the lumber manufacturing associations should send out plenty of plans of homes such as he suggests, .using stock sizes and patterns, and keeping the idea of low cost in mind at all,times, and believes that cooperation between mills, dealers, and cont,ractors along this line, will do the business this vear.

ber company at Beaumont. Leaving Texas he went to St. Louis where he rvas for 5 years with the Huttig Sash and Door Co. He then moved to Arizona and was f.or 4l years with H. W. This spot in the Sierras of California was logged 20 years ago and has since escaped fire. The young growth lcft at the time of cutting and the seedlings started since are rapidly developing into another forest-chiefly sugar pine, western yellow pine, and white fir-which will exceed the original stand.
The condition of the young forest demonstrates the benefits of fire protection. As is shoWn from records kept by the forest experirnent stations of the U. S. F'orest Service on similar young forests, €ven a light ground fire running through this tract not only would destroy many of the young trees but would also slow up the growth rate of those remaining.

"Who owns Bright Angel Trail, the most famour and one of thc most picturesque mountaih trails in Amcric8," asks the cditor of AMERICAN FORESTS AND FOREST LIFE in the June issue of this organ of the American Forestry Association. To this question, continues the article, nine out of ten readers will prollably reply, "The Government, of course, for is not Bright Angel Trail the main foot path into the heart of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, and is not the Grand Canyon one of our greatest national parks ?" The logic of thii reply is good, but as this instance proves, fact does not always follow logic. Bright Angel Trail does not belong to the Federal Government. It is owned by Coconino County of_ the sovereign State of Arizona, and such being the case, _Coco- nino County exacts a toll of one dollar from every Grand Canyon visitor who, astride a sleepy burro, elects to descend its tortuous and awe-inspiring course. An amendment to the appropriation bill for the Department of the Interior which carries thc national park budget, proposing that this trail be purchased by the United States for the sum of $1m,000 has resulted in controversy which has deadlocked the Senate arrdl the House, and has held up for weeks the progress of one of the largest fiscal ,measures, the appropriation bill for the Department of the Interior. Repiesentative Hayden, of Arizona, is- the author of this amCndment which was passed by the House and is in line with the procedure established in the act of Congress creating the Grand Canyon National Park in 1919. Representativl Cramton, Chairman of the House SubCommittee on National Parks, was responsible for reportins this purchase amendment act of the committee in the H6use. but when it reached the Senate it was stricken out.

lands between the foot of India and Eighth streets are voted at the approaching bond election, Joseph W. Sefton, harbor commissioner, announced last night.
All of the lands to be reclaimed have been spoken for, the harbor commissioner said, and leases will be recommended to the city council as soon as the bonds have carried. The establishment of many big lumber concerns on this part of the water front means, Mr. Sefton explained, that the city will reap about 18 or 20 percent annually on its investment.
Concerns listed as having applied for leases are:
Western Lumber company.
Sutlivan Hardwood Lumber company.
San Diego Lumber company.
Russ Lumber company.
Big Jo Lumber company.
Other Companies
It is the intention of these concerns, most of which already have plants here, greatly to improve and enlarge their properties. Many thousands of dollars will be spent in the improvements, Sefton says.

"All of the lumber leases run out in 1925," l're commented. "Some of these leases overlap, and it is our intention to straighten them out, along our general plan of harbor development. When the bay is dredged at this point and the tidelands filled in, the luml>er concerns will have 22 feet of water for lumber shipments. They intend to establish the most up-to-date plants."
Revenue of $43,000
The rental which the city rvould receive under this proposed plan would be about $30,000 a year, an amount many times greater than is being collected from the lumber concerns. The franchise tax levied by the city auditor would add about $13,000.
Mr.. Sefton believes the bonds for the harbor imorovements'will carry, when the people realize what they are to get for their investment.
In addition to the $250,000 for the dredging and filling the people will be asked to vote $200,000 for the comple-- tion of municipal pier No. 2.
The Sun Lumber Company, of Beverly Hills, (which was the Woods-Beckman Lumber Company until is was sold to Frank Burnaby a few months ago) now occupies handsome new offices right in the corner of the lumber yard, in place of the downtown ofiEces two blocks distant that were formerly used.

Vancouver (B. C.) July 1.-Steamship lines operating out of this port have decided to ask the Intercoastal Steamship Conference for a differential on parcels of lumber less than 100,000 feet.
. Recently companies shipping lumber to New York have been giving the boat officials much worry about these small parcels of lumber and the necessity for having the bills of lading and other documents especially signed on the ship for the delivery of each individual order as earmarked.
On the boat leaving here recently with 1,5@,000 feet of lumber there were seventy-three bills of lading.
There are differentials in styles of lumber going to the Orient and the trade has decided to make similar additional charges for small material moving intercoastal.

While the manner in which Cedar Shingles are packed is by far secondary to the quality of manufacture, neatness of bundles, selection of timber, etc., it has nevertheless been a subject upon which many differences of opinion have arisen and upon which numerous heated arguments have resulted during the past few years. It was therefore for the purpose of discovering how the majority of retail lumber dealers preferred shingles bundled that the Red Cedar Shingle Bureau, in co-operation with the National Retail Lumber Dealers.Association asked the retail trade through each state and regional association to express their individual views upon return printed post cards, the result of which survey is given herewith.

We have not been able to accomplish in lfoo-Hoo, all that we had planned in th'e past year, but I suppose that we should not complain. We held a very successful Concat__on January l9th, at which 41 Kittens took the trip to Hoo-Hoo land.
_ Our plans for a Concat on May 30th, at the Logging Camp of Sugar Pine Company, faiied on account of strict quarantine measures then in effect. We also had planned for one or two nice parties, but they had to be called off on account of quarantine restrictions. For the future, we plan the organization of th,e Hoo-Hoo Club for Fresno, and hope before the year is over, that we may be able to hold the Concat at the Logging Camp of the- Sugar Pine Company.
I believe that Hoo-Hoo holds in store for we of the Lumber Industry, a great deal, if we will only apply ourselves and really' make an investment in it. Ii is -said that we get out of an investment, a r,eturn in proportion to the amount invested. Consequently, it is nlcessary for the individual membership to put the best they have irito it. As

How many ealifornians know that there is a roof of ggld in the vicinity of San Francisco? Yes, real gold, and it's not on the home of some opulent captain of indusrty, either. In fact it covers one of Uncle Sam's homes-the naval training station at Goat Island, a structure gracing the magnificent San Frartcisco harbor.
Around the laying of that roof in 1898 hang an historical story. I heard the 1tory of this golden roof recently f1Jrl' Mr. S. C. Irving, a director of the company. Said Mr. Irving:
"In 1898 rvhen a roof was needed to cover the new Goat Island Training Station, I felt that the best thing for me to do was to go onto Washington. I arrived in Washington and an hour later found myself in the Admiral's office. He had the reputation of being a chronic grouch, and as his back was turned to me I decided to announce my presence. He turned and scowled at me.
"Well, to cut a long story short I was awarded the contract. I hastened back to San Francisco and work on installing the roof began. We couldn't get sufficient iron slag, until I heard of a lot of iron slag in Melrose, a sTall citv in Alameda Countv. The smelter had been used to separate rebellious gold ore, and after we put quite a quantity of the slag on the roof it was discovered that th9 slag contained gold which assayed nothing less than $'1O.00 a ton.
"You can rest assured that when the discovery was made no more of that type of slag went on the roof. A funny thing about it was that the slag on the roof was worth more than the entire roof."
By reason of an increase in the appropriation for silvical research recently granted by Cong:ress, plans are being made in the Forest Service for the establishment of a forest experiment station in the Pacific Northwest to handle the foiestry problems of Washington and Oregon. This station will be on a par rvith those established a year ago at St. Paul, Minn., and Amherst, Mass., to care for the Lake States and Northeastern regions. Its location has not yet been determined, but will probably be announced this fall by the Fcirest Service. Growth, management, and protection of Douglas fir and other coastal types will be the most pressing problem of the new station, in addition to questions pertaining to management of the yellow pine forests on the eastern side of the Cascade range.
The Los Angeles Wholesale Lumbermen's Baseball team, composed of nine of the best playing and har4est hitting men to be found in this business, in Southern California, played a hard fought battle, with the Retailers Team, on Saturday afternoon, June 28th, with the sad result of a score of 20 to 2, in favor of the retail gang.
The winning boys had it all their way from the start, proving themselves. the superior players, both in their fielding ability and in their swatting.
There were quite a number of rooters on hand, and a considerable sum was raised, to apply on the purchase of uniforms for the Los Angeles Hoo-Hoo team, Mr. Forest Wilson, of Meyer & Hodge, Los Angeles, is captain of the Wholesalers team, and B. W. Bookstaver, of McCulloughFagan is manager.

The Boyd Lumber & Mill Company, at Santa Barbara, is using a very good printed form for their estimates, invoices, cash orders, and dray slips, using one base form for all of them, and designating the variods kinds by the use of difierent colored paper, and by the insertion, at the top of the words, t'Invoice," "Credit," "Cash Ticket," etc.
This system, of course, effects a considerable economy in the preparation of their printed matter, and is one that could be used to advantage by other yards.
The form pictured herewith, is the one used in the office for memorandums, small estimates, etc., and is printed on yellow stock, bound in pads, and with no numbers.

Cady Lumber Company, sprung a surprise on the Arizona Sportsmens Association trap shooting contest on July 7th, r,r'hen he broke 98 targets from 'the 2l yard line, out of a possible 100, winning the contest. One of the most important actions of the House of Ancients and Supreme l.iine was the revision of Clause No. 3 of the By-Laws of the Order, relating to eligibility for membership.
After lengthy consideration and discussion, the -question devolved upon- two '1v61d5-"tumbey'' and "wood"-a5 fhs basis of determining eligibility. It was unanimously agreed that Hoo-Hoo was-founded as a lumber org-anization and that its membership must come from those having the lumber business as their personal occupation.

Whittling, once a great pastime in this country, has declineed to a point of indifference. Why? Because white pine, which r,r'as rvhat we whittled, is no longer the wood of common usage.
There are, to be sure, other woods we can whittle, and we are the same philosophical and leisurely people we always were; but we have nothing that .vvhittles as white pine whittled. Whittling is of doubtful sen'ice to the human race. Washington, July lG-An unusually important survey and analysis of business conditions from the lumber industry's viewpoint, is furnished in a recent letter written by Dr. Wilson Compton, secretary and manager of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, in-answer to an inquiry from a southern lumber manufacturer. In his letter Dr. Compton says:
"MI analysis of business conditions, r,eflecting information of all varieties and from all types of sources, leads me to the conclusion that moderate industrial activity is all that can reasonably be expected until October. The industrial situation is exce,edingly uneven. More than a score of important industries show greater activity no.iv than last year. Others equally, or more important, show a volume of commodity movement from ten to fifty percent less than last year. Lumber conditions also are spotted and will, I think, remain so during the summer.- The South is better than the West: the North better than the South, and the hardwood industry in the North apparently in slightly b'etter shape than in the South, but no 6etter, ij as good as in the Appalachian territory.
"The forest products car-loading during the first five monhts ol 1924 are a little greater than the total volume during the same months of 1923. Manifestly the volume of lumber movem,ent has been greater than usual. Also the production has been'on a larger scale than usual during the past five years. Under similar circumstances hereto-fore it has always taken the lumber industry a period of
several months to adjust total production to the broad movements in demand. The result is a relative scarcity of stocks during the early months of a broad lumber buying movement, and ordinarily a compensating increase in unsold stocks during the period of decline in general buying. It takes the lumber manufacturing industry between four

The Washington Mill & Lumber Company at lhe plesgqt time occupies o-ffices in the Merchants National Bank Building in Los Angeles, but splendid offices are being fitted up in the new waiehouse building, and within a ferv days the downtown offices will be closed, and the entire business transacted from the new building.
Referring to the new warehouse,'l\[r. Brorvne made the following slatement to The California Lumber Merchant:
"For some time our company has realized the need of a first class completely stocked warehouse in Los Angeles to supplement car load shipments direct from the mill to the dealers. "Manifestly there has been a large consumption of lumber this year. Current reports would indicate that lumber stocks in local yards and lumber using industries are relatively low. Probably they are. Such a situation is entirely logical. As long as production and shipments are notably out of joint, hand-to-mouth buying is to be expected. Particularly so when manufacturers and wholesalers, finding themselves with an array of ill-sorted stocks, are making 'special' offers in order to move their surplus items. That condition makes bargain hunters. Btargain hunters do not buy in advance.
"Th,ese, however, are somewhat superficial. For the lumber industry as a whole there is a much more important underlying condition. Most lumber is used in construction in some form. In l92O the average Southern Pine prices reached $5a.00; they are norv about $23.00. The Douglas Fir in t920 reached $44.00; it is now about 922.00. Between the peak in 7920 and at the present, lumber mill prices have been particularly cut in two.
"Generally speaking, lumber products constitute from one-quarter to one-third of finished cost of an average lumber built house. The cost of installation, general building trades labor, constitute between one-third and one-half. For the country as a whole wages in building trades are now greater than in 1920, or than any time heretofore. Please do not mistake me as setting up an argument for lower wages. I am discussing not wagei; as such,-which is a separate matter,-but the labor price in building costs. I point out simply the fact that the 30 per cent cost factor has declined from forty to fifty percent (ancl likewise I presume the retail prices in substantially similar propor- tion), while the forty percent factor in building costs has dropped not at all.

"This situation is manifestly lop-sided. Reduction of building cost is not necessarily dependent upon lower wages. It is largely dependent upon lower labor cost. But such reduction can be accomplished as well by greater productivity and efficiency of labor as by decline in wages themselves. This lop-sided condition of industrial readjustment is apparent too in the wood-using industries, though probably not so pronounced as in the construction field. The hardwood industry is not so directly concerned in construction, as the softwood industry. It is not to be expected, however, and in fact it has not heretofore occurred, that there should be any marked difference between hardwoods and softwoods with respect to fundamental conditions.
"You have asked merelv for a statement of mv views. Manifectly I cannot make an inteligible response"without' this brief mention of facts rvhich lead ine to the conclusion that the lumber movement of the country as a whole during the summer and early fall will at best be moderate and that thereafter a gradual and fundamental recov€ry may be expected with considerable confidence."
R. F. Hammatt has returned from a two weeks' trip to Los Angeles where he supervised the opening of their nelv Southern California office with Max E. Cook in charge of their new Architectural Service Department. Mr. Hammatt said that thev have had several calls from contractors at their new Los Angeles office seeking advice on redwood; he stated that they were able to trace these calls directly to their advertisement appearing in the July 1 issue of "The California Lumber Merchant" which announced the opening of the Architectural Service Department there.

At the regular luncheon of Hoo-Hoo Club No. t held at the Palace Hotel on June 26, there was a large crowd out to enjoy the fine program that was arranged for by Frank O'Connor of the Donovan Lumber Co., who was the chairman of the day.
After the luncheon, president R. A. Hiscox presided over a short business session. Frank Trower gave a short talk on the Klamath Falls Concat. A. B. Wastell, Vicegerent Snark of the Bay District, told of the monster Concat that is planned to be held in August. Bob Buzzard, of the Siskyou Lumber Co., and Bob Inglis, Stockton, also gave interesting talks. Kenneth Smith, of Long-Bell Lumber Co., was the winner of the attendance prize that was donated by Frank Paramino. The second prize,.a beautiful redwood bungalow, was won by Milt Conklin of the HartWood'Lumber Co.
President Hiscox then turned the meeting over to Frank O'Connor who introduced "Kirk" Smith who made a big hit with the crowd with his Scotch stories told in his wonderful Scotish dialect. He then introduced Capt. Walter J. Peterson, formerly Chief of Police of the city of Oakland and an ex-captain in the Army, as the speaker of the day, who gave an interesting and stirring address on citizenship that was greatly appreciated by the large audience.
President Hiscox announced that Chas. Moody, of the Sudden-Heitman Lumber Co., rvould have charge of the next meeting.
Ted Lawrence, Los Angeles manager for the Hart-Wood Lumber Company, was chairman at the Hoo-Hoo luncheon on Thursday, July 10.
The Snark again made himself conspicuous by being late, and by being fined. He will have to crank up his Studebaker a little earlier next Thursday. Before turning the meeting over to Mr. Lawrence, the Snark told the boys of the completion of his plans for a series of lectures on lumber, to be given by Professor Smiley, of Occidental College. There rvill be five of these talks, one each for the next five Thursdays, and Mr. Rosenberg urges all lumbermen to attend. The lectures will start Thursday, July l7th.
Ted Lawrence first told the meeting of the cancellation of the Ensenada trip, planned for Saturday of this week. The San Diego Hoo-Hoo Club had notified that the government regulations prevented their carrying out their plans.
He then introduced Mr. A. C. Hall, Los Angeles manager for Babsons Statistical Bureau. Mr. Hall spoke very interestingly on the business outlook from a statistical standpoint, and then answered a number of questions that rvere put at him by some of the boys.
Jack Dionne made an impromptu speech on the lumber market, that was very well received.
He reiterated his prediction that the rvest coast market was due to follow Southern Pine, in an uprvard movement and pointed out that we were due for better times, and in a verv short time.

Ed. Garland, manager of the rail department of the Chas. R. McCormick Lumber Co., San Francisco, has returned from a several days trip to Yosemite where he spent the holidays. Ed. said that he was amazed at the rvonderful scenery in the Yosemite National Park and that there were close to 3000 people in the Park over the holidays. He was accompanied by Mrs. Garland on the trip.
Frederic S. Palmer. the well known San Francisco distributor of California White and Sugar Pine, has left for the east on a month's business trip. He will visit the pine consuming centers in the Mississippi Valley and other eastern states going as far east as Nerv York and Boston.
Mr. E. L. Reitz, of the sales department of the S. C. Hooper Lumber Company, Los Angeles rvholesalers, in enjoying a months trip through the Northrvest, rvhere he is calling on the various mill connections of his company. He will return to Los Angeles about August lst.
Mr. Walter R. Fifer, rvho has been representing the Williams Fir Finish Company in Los Angeles for the past year, has severed his connection rvith that concern, and starting July 1st, rvill be connected rvith the Washington Lumber & Milhvork Company, of Los Angeles.
Mr. Fifer will be in the sales end of the game, assisting Mr. Jas G. Browne, president of the company.
Mr. H. P. Kennedy, of Lumber Buyers Inc., Seattle, has been spending several days visiting his lumbermen friends, in and around Los Angeles.
R. F. Hammatt, secretary-manager of the California Redrvood Association, San Frincisco, has left on a two weeks' vacation which rvill be spent at Donner Lake in the Sierras. He is accompanied by his family and plans to return about August 1.
A. J. Russell of the Santa Fe Lumber Co., San Francisco, and George Burnett of the Burnett Lumber Co., Tulare, have returned from a two weeks' business trip to the Northwest rvhere they called on their lumbermen friends and looked over business conditions in the Portland and Puget Sound Districts.
J. A. McWatters, rvell knorvn San Francisco lumberman, is now associated with the Hart-Wood Lumber Co. of San Francisco and rvill cover the Bay District for this well known concern. "Mac" has been actively associated r*'ith the lumber trade of the Bay District and Northern California for the past several years and due to his singing ability is very much in demand at Hoo-Hoo and other lumbermen gatherings. His many friends are wishing him much suCcess rvith his nerv connection.
R. A. Hiscox, president of the Western States Lumber Co., San Francisc-o, accompanied by I\lrs. R- A. Hiscox and Miss l\fervil Hiscox, are on a pleasure trip to Alaska. They made short stops at Portland and Seattle prior-to their sailing from Selttle. They rvill return to San Francisco around the later part of the month.
