How Lumber Looks

Lumbcr doern't look wonderful in California, or anywhere on the Coeit for that matter, but it lookr better than it har, ro there ir rome runrhine to refer to.

When a lumber market ir ernarhing, you can't rell lumber at any price. Today, accord. ing to ttre bert advice of conrcnative mitl reprerentativer and wholecalerr in California, you can sell ANYTHING you offer, if you will make the price. That nececeary price ir deplorably low-oo low that raler are very rlow-$ut the fact remainr that the big yardr will take dt you offer, if you ofrer it cheap enough.

The cmall lumber yardr look at it in a different way. They are living hand to mouth, buy- ing only what they need, and when they need it, and they dontt grab at bargainr that are offered them, at all. However, as soon as they actually NEED Iumber, they go out and buy it, and generally have to pay a higher price than the stuff is being peddled around at.

It ir the rame old rtory. While lumber har been dropping in price for monthr thc millr have actually rold dl theyr have madc. The only thing that hae rufiered ir thi pri€A rince they have NOT piled up lumber, and have low rtockr

We raid in thir column on July firrt that Southern Pine would NOT continue to make and sell lumber below the cort of production, and predicted that Southern Pine would go up early in JuIy. Our prediction har already come true. Since the lart week in June Southern Pine rales have exceeded production. and there has been a decided rtrengthening in the Southern Pine market. Pro. duction ia reported very low, with ordert about the same aE they have been for the past thirty days. The chances are that orders for Southern Pine will increase materially during the remainder of JuIy. That recovery of the balance in Southern Pine will quickly help the Fir situation, there can be no doubt.

The mills of the Northwest didn't curtail anything like it was reported they were going to do for the holiday aeason. The Day of the Salesman Returns

A lot of people have been aeking of late: "What has happened to thc lumber business in California?"

Nothing abnormal; nothing tragic; nothing that might not well have been cxpected. The lumber industry in California is GOING BACK TO WORK. That's all. The day of the SALESMAN hag come back.

For the past two years the lumber business has been so overwhelmingly prosperous in California that, to a very great extent, building material sold itself, prices were not considered a matter of vital importance, and it was largely a matter of delivering the goods and collecting the money.

But the history of the lumber business from its inception until now, shows that it swings up, and it swings down. It has to swing down now and then in order to normalize things. It has to swing back occasionally in order that it may be kept sane. It has to have its setbacks to the end that it may not get out of the reach of the building public. It always HAS swung back. It always WILL.

It is NOT an unhealthy process. Simply unpleasant. It's bitter, but the doctor says ttTake it" t

For lumber to prosper, people must buy homes, and barns, and buildings generally. And regardless of everything else, lumber takes a bump every now and then in order, it would seem, that people could still afford to buy these things.

So, here in California, the lumber setback puts us back to digging, and scratching, and hustling for business again. It won't hurt us. It wiil do us good. People are like hens,'anyway. The scratching the hen does in gathering her food is the thing that keeps her healthy. It isn't much different with humans.

Eating without scratching spoils hens. It spoils a lot of people, also. The lumber business has come mighty easy to a whole lot of people in California for a couple of years. Now we're going back to WORKING and SELLING again.

'We're going back to sitting on the lid, watching the costs, hustling for sales, scrambling for a profit; and the profit will be the more appreciated because we got it that way.

That's all there is to it !

It's nothing to worry over. It can't be Christmas all the time. Only the sluggard and the inefficient will be actually hurt.

We're simply going to say goodby to a period of HIGH pay and LOW workl LO.W efficiency and HIGH remuneration; SMALL selling effort and BfG volume.

The Good Book says that we shall live by the sweat of our brows.

The lumber industry of California is carrying out that program right now, and it won't hurt a bit in the long run.

It's simply a case of plan, work, hustle, create, SELL ! And the chances are that as we sow, "so shall we reap."

Sacramento Valley Lumb%men's Club Picnic '/

One of the most enjoyable meetings of the Sacramento Valley Lumbermen's Club was held on Saturday June 2L when'they had their summer picnic at beautiful McKinley Park, Sacramento.

After the luncheon, there was a short business session presided over by L. H. Chapman, president of the club. Applications for membership from White Brothers and J. E. Higgins Lumber Co., both prominent hardwood concerns of San Francisco, were read and admitted to membership in the club. The following telegram was sent to the lumbermen at San Diego where they had assembled for the annual picnic of the California Retail Lumbermen's Association: "Members and ladies of the Sacramento Valley Lumbermen's Association in picnic assembled, send greetings and best wishes from Sacramento the Heart of California to the lumbermen of the South at San Diego. Hope that you have a big day and that we may m-et together at Calaveras Grove in August."

The day was ideal for picnicking and an excellent lunch was served under the shade of the large spreading trees. During the luncheon, a radio concert was enjoyed and a vote of thanks was tendered the Kimball-Upson Co., for their courtesy of installing the radio which provided such dn excellent entertainment.

C. H. Dunton, of the Land Department of the California National Bank, Sacramento, was then introduced and he gave an excellent talk on the World Mining Congress that will be held in Sacramento in September. He said that there would be 3000 delbgates at this Conference. Mr. Dunton also spoke on the development of California and referred to the.part that had been taken by the lumbermen in its progress. M. C. Doane, San Jose; Bert Neylan, San Francisco; and H. C. Clark, Los Angeles, spoke on market conditions. A. B. "Boost Small Homes" Says Manufacturer

We have a letter from a leading lumber manu{acturer, in which he makes the following pertinent suggestion:

"The torvns which are doing the business today are the torvns in which the retailers and contractors are buildirrg homes which can be sold for $4,000 and less. There is a tremendous demdnd for this kind of home and there isn't any reason why they cannot be built in any locality. One trouble is that the average contractor has been working on better homes for so long he has forgotten that houses can be built and put on the market for around $4,000. In this day of specialized building one of the causes of advanced building costs is the fact that builders have gotten away from stock sizes and stock patterns. I suggest you urge through your publications the selling of building material in the shape of modest, low-priced homes."

We agree strongly rvith the gentleman quoted. He says further that the lumber manufacturing associations should send out plenty of plans of homes such as he suggests, .using stock sizes and patterns, and keeping the idea of low cost in mind at all, times, and believes that cooperation between mills, dealers, and cont, ractors along this line, will do the business this vear.

There is plenty of meat in the suggestions made. It is NOT as easy to sell a $10,000 home today as it was six months ago. It will not be any easier six months from now, than it is now. Therefore, the lumber industry should conform its effo, rts to rneet the changed conditionts, and offer more small homes for sale.

The small home can be made just as attractive as the larger one, and a four room bungalorv built attractively, need cost very little more than the box-car type of the same propo, rtions.

WHO OWNS BRIOHT ANOEL TRAIL?

Unclc Sm Docrn't Orpn thc Treil lnto Gnnd Crnyon

This spot in the Sierras of California was logged 20 years ago and has since escaped fire. The young growth lcft at the time of cutting and the seedlings started since are rapidly developing into another forest-chiefly sugar pine, western yellow pine, and white fir-which will exceed the original stand.

The condition of the young forest demonstrates the benefits of fire protection. As is shoWn from records kept by the forest experirnent stations of the U. S. F'orest Service on similar young forests, €ven a light ground fire running through this tract not only would destroy many of the young trees but would also slow up the growth rate of those remaining.

"Who owns Bright Angel Trail, the most famour and one of thc most picturesque mountaih trails in Amcric8," asks the cditor of AMERICAN FORESTS AND FOREST LIFE in the June issue of this organ of the American Forestry Association. To this question, continues the article, nine out of ten readers will prollably reply, "The Government, of course, for is not Bright Angel Trail the main foot path into the heart of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, and is not the Grand Canyon one of our greatest national parks ?" The logic of thii reply is good, but as this instance proves, fact does not always follow logic. Bright Angel Trail does not belong to the Federal Government. It is owned by Coconino County of_ the sovereign State of Arizona, and such being the case, _Coco- nino County exacts a toll of one dollar from every Grand Canyon visitor who, astride a sleepy burro, elects to descend its tortuous and awe-inspiring course. An amendment to the appropriation bill for the Department of the Interior which carries thc national park budget, proposing that this trail be purchased by the United States for the sum of $1m,000 has resulted in controversy which has deadlocked the Senate arrdl the House, and has held up for weeks the progress of one of the largest fiscal ,measures, the appropriation bill for the Department of the Interior. Repiesentative Hayden, of Arizona, is- the author of this amCndment which was passed by the House and is in line with the procedure established in the act of Congress creating the Grand Canyon National Park in 1919. Representativl Cramton, Chairman of the House SubCommittee on National Parks, was responsible for reportins this purchase amendment act of the committee in the H6use. but when it reached the Senate it was stricken out.

lands between the foot of India and Eighth streets are voted at the approaching bond election, Joseph W. Sefton, harbor commissioner, announced last night.

All of the lands to be reclaimed have been spoken for, the harbor commissioner said, and leases will be recommended to the city council as soon as the bonds have carried. The establishment of many big lumber concerns on this part of the water front means, Mr. Sefton explained, that the city will reap about 18 or 20 percent annually on its investment.

Concerns listed as having applied for leases are:

Western Lumber company.

Sutlivan Hardwood Lumber company.

San Diego Lumber company.

Russ Lumber company.

Big Jo Lumber company.

Other Companies

It is the intention of these concerns, most of which already have plants here, greatly to improve and enlarge their properties. Many thousands of dollars will be spent in the improvements, Sefton says.

Sendcd

Doorr Finirh Mldsr.

"All of the lumber leases run out in 1925," l're commented. "Some of these leases overlap, and it is our intention to straighten them out, along our general plan of harbor development. When the bay is dredged at this point and the tidelands filled in, the luml>er concerns will have 22 feet of water for lumber shipments. They intend to establish the most up-to-date plants."

Revenue of $43,000

The rental which the city rvould receive under this proposed plan would be about $30,000 a year, an amount many times greater than is being collected from the lumber concerns. The franchise tax levied by the city auditor would add about $13,000.

Mr.. Sefton believes the bonds for the harbor imorovements'will carry, when the people realize what they are to get for their investment.

In addition to the $250,000 for the dredging and filling the people will be asked to vote $200,000 for the comple-- tion of municipal pier No. 2.

DIFFERENTIAL SOUGHT ON LUMBER CARGOES

Vancouver (B. C.) July 1.-Steamship lines operating out of this port have decided to ask the Intercoastal Steamship Conference for a differential on parcels of lumber less than 100,000 feet.

. Recently companies shipping lumber to New York have been giving the boat officials much worry about these small parcels of lumber and the necessity for having the bills of lading and other documents especially signed on the ship for the delivery of each individual order as earmarked.

On the boat leaving here recently with 1,5@,000 feet of lumber there were seventy-three bills of lading.

There are differentials in styles of lumber going to the Orient and the trade has decided to make similar additional charges for small material moving intercoastal.

Retail Lumber Dealer Opinions Regarding the Packing of Red Cedar Shingles

Approximately 7l/o of 3500 or more deaters from all parts of the country prefer the twenty-five courses to the bundle, four bundles to the M (or what is known as "Thousand"), and the remaining D/o favor what is known as "Square" pack, or twenty courses to the bundle, ,four bundlel to cover 100 square feet of surface when laid 5" to the weather, five bundles to the M.

Many dealers beside mentioning specifically the method of pack preferred made additional comments, atl of which are quoted below by States.

CALIF'ORNIA

"Thousand pack, cheapest way."

"Present packing suits us, 4 bundles to the 'M'."

"250 to Bunch same old way."

COLORADO

" tM' pack every time.t'

"Makes no difference, we cdn sell them either way with no trouble."

DELAWARE

"Don't make much difference to us which way, but if majority says'Square' we will fall in line."

IDAHO

"One member of our. firm wants square pack and the other 'M'."

"Trade prefers 'M', personally we prefer square."

ILLINOIS

"Would much rather see square based on 4l inch instead of 5 inch €xposure as no shingles are put on 5" exposure in this territory."

"Squars-xnd have bought nothing else for over a year."

"'We don't particularly care if it is made only one way or the other and the other eliminated."

"Square, if adopted generally by all manufacturers." While the manner in which Cedar Shingles are packed is by far secondary to the quality of manufacture, neatness of bundles, selection of timber, etc., it has nevertheless been a subject upon which many differences of opinion have arisen and upon which numerous heated arguments have resulted during the past few years. It was therefore for the purpose of discovering how the majority of retail lumber dealers preferred shingles bundled that the Red Cedar Shingle Bureau, in co-operation with the National Retail Lumber Dealers.Association asked the retail trade through each state and regional association to express their individual views upon return printed post cards, the result of which survey is given herewith.

An Ideal Foursome

This looks like an ideal foursome for golf but they are on another mission, they are just making their get-away from the office of the Knox Lumber Co. to attend the picnic of the Sacramento Valley Lumbermen's Club held at McKinley Park, Sacramento, on June 21.

Reading from left to right, the gentlemon on the extremg left who looks so happy is "Al" Kelley, of the Santa Fe Lumber Co.; next is Oscar. Miller the popular Sacramento lumberman and manager of the Knox Lumber Co.; therr 'comes Fred Burgers of the Union Lumber Co. who likes to talk on the "ever-lasting" qualities of redwood; while the serious looking gentleman on the extreme right is Allan Turner of the Gerlinger Lumber Co.

There are a lot of pcoplc connectcd with thc lumbcr buriness in Southern California who are not talkinc about "slow business." Onc of thcrc in particular is -Howell Baker, head of the California Pancl &-Veneer Company, of Los Angeles.Mr. Baker announceE that thcy havi stiited the construction of a big new modern warehouse and office- building in connection with their present warehouse, and replacing their present offices. The new warehouee will give them practically double the warehouse space they have at present, and -much larger and more corirmodioui ottlces, two Btory in character.

"Our business so far this year has been almost exactly the same as our business for the first six months ol 1925, and it is holding up splendidly," says Mr. Baker.

He is one of these "Buginess is good-we make it good,' sort of business men.

Extras

When you're building your house take a warning from meDon't alter or change anything that you see t When once you've agreed on the cost of the place, Go out of the city and don't show your face To the mason, the plumber, the carpenter's crew, For the things they call "extras" will paralyze you.

Should you say: "Put a hook here to hang up my hat." You'll find as an "extra" they've charged you for that. Should by chance you remark to the boss: "Do you think The gas range should stand where you're putting the sink." He will say with a smile: "That's a very good change"But that's twelve dolars "extra" for moving the range.

Should you fancy white paint where you've ordered it blue, Right gladly they'll smear on the white stuff for you; But they've somewhere in hiding a man who keeps books, Who counts up the nails and the bolts and the hooks, And seeing white paint where the plan called for blue, He puts down an "extra" and bills it to you.

That man is a marvel. He eats not, nor sleeps, So strict an account of your orders he keeps. Should you change but the type of the hinge on a door, That goes down as an "extra" and costs so much more. So when building a house alter nothing you see, And beware of these "extras" which bankrupted me.

The Fresno District Hoo-Hoo

We have not been able to accomplish in lfoo-Hoo, all that we had planned in th'e past year, but I suppose that we should not complain. We held a very successful Concat__on January l9th, at which 41 Kittens took the trip to Hoo-Hoo land.

_ Our plans for a Concat on May 30th, at the Logging Camp of Sugar Pine Company, faiied on account of strict quarantine measures then in effect. We also had planned for one or two nice parties, but they had to be called off on account of quarantine restrictions. For the future, we plan the organization of th,e Hoo-Hoo Club for Fresno, and hope before the year is over, that we may be able to hold the Concat at the Logging Camp of the- Sugar Pine Company.

I believe that Hoo-Hoo holds in store for we of the Lumber Industry, a great deal, if we will only apply ourselves and really' make an investment in it. Ii is -said that we get out of an investment, a r,eturn in proportion to the amount invested. Consequently, it is nlcessary for the individual membership to put the best they have irito it. As

I have above stated, we have been somewhat handicapped here this year,-but hope during the coming year conditibns ma-I be more favorable t_o our-doing muc6 io promote the welfare and. interest of Hoo-Hoo ahong the Lumber Industry of this district.

Personally,_I-believe that Hoo-Hoo is indispensable to the Lumber Industry, because it provides a -edium upon which ye gay_all meet for a common purpose; that' of promoting "health, happiness and lone life.,t

NAVAL STATION GRACES ROOF OF GOLD

How many ealifornians know that there is a roof of ggld in the vicinity of San Francisco? Yes, real gold, and it's not on the home of some opulent captain of indusrty, either. In fact it covers one of Uncle Sam's homes-the naval training station at Goat Island, a structure gracing the magnificent San Frartcisco harbor.

Around the laying of that roof in 1898 hang an historical story. I heard the 1tory of this golden roof recently f1Jrl' Mr. S. C. Irving, a director of the company. Said Mr. Irving:

"In 1898 rvhen a roof was needed to cover the new Goat Island Training Station, I felt that the best thing for me to do was to go onto Washington. I arrived in Washington and an hour later found myself in the Admiral's office. He had the reputation of being a chronic grouch, and as his back was turned to me I decided to announce my presence. He turned and scowled at me.

"Well, to cut a long story short I was awarded the contract. I hastened back to San Francisco and work on installing the roof began. We couldn't get sufficient iron slag, until I heard of a lot of iron slag in Melrose, a sTall citv in Alameda Countv. The smelter had been used to separate rebellious gold ore, and after we put quite a quantity of the slag on the roof it was discovered that th9 slag contained gold which assayed nothing less than $'1O.00 a ton.

"You can rest assured that when the discovery was made no more of that type of slag went on the roof. A funny thing about it was that the slag on the roof was worth more than the entire roof."

NEW FOREST EXPERIMENT STATION PLANS FOR NORTHWEST AND SOUTHERN STATES

By reason of an increase in the appropriation for silvical research recently granted by Cong:ress, plans are being made in the Forest Service for the establishment of a forest experiment station in the Pacific Northwest to handle the foiestry problems of Washington and Oregon. This station will be on a par rvith those established a year ago at St. Paul, Minn., and Amherst, Mass., to care for the Lake States and Northeastern regions. Its location has not yet been determined, but will probably be announced this fall by the Fcirest Service. Growth, management, and protection of Douglas fir and other coastal types will be the most pressing problem of the new station, in addition to questions pertaining to management of the yellow pine forests on the eastern side of the Cascade range.

Wholesalers Beaten in Ball Game at Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Wholesale Lumbermen's Baseball team, composed of nine of the best playing and har4est hitting men to be found in this business, in Southern California, played a hard fought battle, with the Retailers Team, on Saturday afternoon, June 28th, with the sad result of a score of 20 to 2, in favor of the retail gang.

The winning boys had it all their way from the start, proving themselves. the superior players, both in their fielding ability and in their swatting.

There were quite a number of rooters on hand, and a considerable sum was raised, to apply on the purchase of uniforms for the Los Angeles Hoo-Hoo team, Mr. Forest Wilson, of Meyer & Hodge, Los Angeles, is captain of the Wholesalers team, and B. W. Bookstaver, of McCulloughFagan is manager.

Harken [Jnto This Parable All Ye That Are Called Salesmen

. And in those days, behold, there came thru the gates of the _City a stranger from afar off. And it came to piss that as the days went by, he sold large scads of stuff. They that were grouches, smiled upon him and gave him the glad hand. The tightwads opened their pur*s unto him.

And there were buyers who could squeeze a penny until the blood flowed from Caesar's nose. - And, bihold, enen they took the Stranger to the Great Inn and filled him with much fine eats.

And those of the city that were Promise Getters and they that spent their days in adding to the Alibi sheet were astonished. They said one to anoiher: "What tell ? How does he get away with it?"

Ald it came to pass- that many of them gathered together in the back room of the Inn. And a -soothsayer came among them. And he was one wise guy.

Arrd_-they spake and questioned him-, saying:

"Tell us, oh Soothsayer, 'how come'? This man has come among us from af.ar off. He goether abdut in a Flivver from early morn _even until lati in the evening gathering I-_"r9. Bunches of big subscriptions, while we, lelold, oui blanks are unwritten upon, and we fear to report to our Sales Manager, lest he. smite us upon the hip and thigh.,' r ne sootnsayer repheth:

"He of whom yol speak is, verily, One Hustler. He

ariseth in the early hours preceding the dawn and goeth forth full of pep. He complaineth not. He assembleth with the early morning sales conference and eagerly taketh in all the rvisdom that cometh from the schoolmaster and absorbeth it as a thick blotter, and'retaineth it for the future in a convincing' canvass. He selleth much Union Mortgage, for he is arrayed in purple and fine linen, while ye go forth with faces unshaven and holes in your socks.

"While ye gather here and say, 'Verily, this is a helluva day to work,' he is already abroad; and, when the eleventh hour is come h'e needeth no alibi. The poolroom attracteth him not-neither the movies upon whom he casteth much scorn during the hours of the golden harvest. Hard-boiled eggs that say, 'Nay,'nay,' when he enter, troubleth him not, for b,ehold, when he leaveth, their names appeareth quite legibly upon the lines that are dotted.

"Aspiration and Perspiration accompanyeth him on all his journeys thruout the land of shrewd investors-and he laboreth to beat hell. Go ye and do likewise."

And they smiled and shrugged their shoulders, saying: "Old stuff, old stuff. We hear that every day"-and forthwith went out upon the street and chewed the rag upon the corner and were content to turneth in small orders in the day of rich harvests.

-From "lsf5 Qe"-House Organ,

There is No Substitute for Friendship

We believe that we have one of t'he finest organizationr, from a man-power rtandpoint, to be found in the lumber producing indurtry.

Added to this, our three planta have been built with the knowledge that they must meet todaytr requirements. One of our plantr ic practicdly new, the other two bave been remodeled and rebuilt, and are capable of filling the moot exacting demands.

To these two elements-a working. force intererted and educated in t[e buginess of giving you the lurnber you want, operating m,achiner5r built and inrtalled to incure the high€st perfection in lumber producta; we add a relection of timber; a rigid inspection; and a decire for your continued orderrt'his year, next year, and ten years from today.

RENT

Rent is a monthly reminder that you are not a home owner.

Rent enables the landlord to run round in limousines, and the tenant to run round in circles.

ft is a lot harder to pay for the upkeep of a circle, than it is for the upkeep of a limousine.

Apparently Diogenes was a lot wiser than history has given him credit for being. He lived in a barrel and staved off the landlord.

HOW THE DOLLAR "CIRCULATES''

The dollar you paid on your last month's bill

Was only a dollar to you;

The day it was paid it was laid in our till But its work was far from through. We paid it out to a truck-man stout

Who gave it in trade for meat,

And the butcher man then quickly ran And bought a necktie neat.

The clothier then possessed your yen But wanted a hairbrush more, And the brush store spent, yet every cent, On a sign for the big front door.

The painter then took, your dollar, and look He paid it in on his dwelling,

And the landlord keen bought gasoline

To keep his gears from swelling.

The merchant of oil then banked his spoil, And smiled quite merr-i-lee; Then your boss sent across (though felt it a loss)

And dress your sal-aree

So the little old dollar went on its rounds

Without any flurry or fuss, And brought to you your due so you Could bring us what's due to us.

COULDN'T HAVE BEEN

The fishing enthusiast was telling about the wonderful luck he had on his last trip.

"Say, you should have seen that whopper I hooked just before we quit fishing. Gee whiz ! ft was a monster. It was one of those-er-what the dickens do they call that fish?" and he scratched his head.

"Maybe it was a whale," said a sarcastic listener.

"No," he replied, "It couldn't have been a whale. f was using a WHALE FOR BAIT."

. THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE

"Kisses are the language of love" said the jellybean to the flapper.

"Let's walk round and talk it over," said the sophisticated one.

NO SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN

The Northern man was traveling in the South, and he got off the train at a station to walk about and stretch his legs. There he found an aged darkey selling chicken sandwiches, so he bought one, and immediately discoverid it to be delicious.

"That's a fine sandwich, Ilncle," said he, ..where do you get your chickens?"

"You'all rnus be fum de no'th, aint you Cap?,' asked LIncle."

"Yes, why?" asked the gentleman.

"Caus no Suth'in genamen evah asks a niggah whah he gits his chicking."

MATRIMONIAL

A gentle sow who took recourse To legal craft and lore, Declared "I want a quick divorceMy mate's an awful boar."

A lady sheep who'sought the halls

Of justice wept "Boo-Hoo ! My cruel husband never calls Me anything bue 'u*g."

"We'll have to part" the gander sighed, "ft's not the slightest use To try to live with any bride That's such a silly goose.'i

The stag, however, dropped a tear, And murmured soft and low, "My charming wife's a little deer, I want to keep my doe."

SURE IT WOULD

ft takes a lot of peepul for A world as big as this, And while we wish that sum weie gone A lot of them we'd miss.

We'd miss the bird who has a smile And always likes to show it, We'd miss the man who likes his friends And let's the whole world know it.

We'd miss the guy who always has The time to say "Ifello,', The guy who's always on the job The first to say "Let's go."

And if we'd miss those kind of guys Well, wouldn't it be true, That folks would miss US when we're gone If we were that way too?

GOOD many years ago 'Weyerhaeuser men realized that the greatest thing in the lumber business, manufacturing or retail, was the establishment of permanent customers. Out of this grew the first and foremost policy of the Weyerhaeuser mills-that of making high-quality, uniform lumber and delivering it to the retailer in saleable condition. The success of this policy is best expressed by the large and increasing number of permanent customers which the'Weyerhaeuser mills take pleasure in serving.

The 'Weyerhaeuser mills are able to carryout this polioy, because theyhave the necessary tirnber resources, and logging and manufacturing facilities couptea wit[ a sincere desire to serve.

A Good Universal Form

The Boyd Lumber & Mill Company, at Santa Barbara, is using a very good printed form for their estimates, invoices, cash orders, and dray slips, using one base form for all of them, and designating the variods kinds by the use of difierent colored paper, and by the insertion, at the top of the words, t'Invoice," "Credit," "Cash Ticket," etc.

This system, of course, effects a considerable economy in the preparation of their printed matter, and is one that could be used to advantage by other yards.

The form pictured herewith, is the one used in the office for memorandums, small estimates, etc., and is printed on yellow stock, bound in pads, and with no numbers.

Their cash tickets have the word CASH at the top, are pginted on the same form, and are numbered, in the space in the center, at the bottom. These are bound in duplicate, and on a different colored stock.

The credit slips are designated by the rvord the top, are also numbered, and printed on These are in duplicate.

In l44l printing was discovered. At that time the past was a vast cemetery with hardly an epitaph. The ideas of men had mostly perished in the brain that produced them. Who Is Eligible to Hoo-Ffoo?

Read the Revised Rules

One of the most important actions of the House of Ancients and Supreme l.iine was the revision of Clause No. 3 of the By-Laws of the Order, relating to eligibility for membership.

After lengthy consideration and discussion, the -question devolved upon- two '1v61d5-"tumbey'' and "wood"-a5 fhs basis of determining eligibility. It was unanimously agreed that Hoo-Hoo was-founded as a lumber org-anization and that its membership must come from those having the lumber business as their personal occupation.

Past Snark of the lJniverse W. S. Dickason proposed the revised clause which finally was unanimously adopted and which clearly defines those eligible. It is complete and specific. In -order that district officers and members -may thoroughly understand, the old clause and the revised article are set forth.

The Old Clause No. 3.-Lumbermen who are engaged in the sale or manufacture of timber and logs, or the manufacture or sale at wholesale or retail of primary forest products (such as lumber,. lath, shingles, ties, posts, piling, poles, staves, heading, boxes, sash, doors and millwork), either al owtlers, officers, managers of departments, general superintendents, sales managers or salesmen.

The Revised Clause

No. 3.-Lumbermen: Those who are engaged in tbc manufacture or sale, at wholesale or retail, of lumber' logs' lath, shingles, ties, posts, piling, pol6, 3tav6, beading' boxes, sash, doors and millwork, either as rr.rnerE, oftccrs or managers of departments; and sdes managers or salesmen of lumber, latF, shingfes and millwck

Vicegerent Snarks and other district officers should find no diffi-ulty in determining just who is eligible to membership, a careful perusal of the new clause being all that is necessary as a guide in passing upon applications.

Active membership is defined in Clause No.2, as follows:

The membership of this Order shall bc limid to wbitc male persons of full age of twenty-one (21) yean, of good moral character, who are .identificd with one or more of the following business classifications: Lumbcrmco fo'resters, officers of hunber associations, lumbcr tradc prcse and newspaper men; and so deftritd sball thc line of clarsiCcation be drawn in each division tbat thc rmdcr which persons apply for mcmbcrship chall bc thcir main c principd occupation, and it shdl be thc business Ecognizcd in the community in which the applicant r,csidcs as his pincipd vocation.

The Gentle Art of Whittling

Whittling, once a great pastime in this country, has declineed to a point of indifference. Why? Because white pine, which r,r'as rvhat we whittled, is no longer the wood of common usage.

There are, to be sure, other woods we can whittle, and we are the same philosophical and leisurely people we always were; but we have nothing that .vvhittles as white pine whittled. There is no other u'ood giving off the delicate and plume-like shavings ulhich littered our lorafing places when we rvhittled white pine. Possibly it is just as well. Whittling is of doubtful sen'ice to the human race. Yet, it is questionable whether we shall ever again be quite as happy as we were lvhen we were doihg a great deal of whittling, and it is equally debatable whether our contributions to human pro, gress are as greatr

Probably every one of the men who contributed to the theory of liberal government rvhich we are at this time demonstrating to the rest of the world, was an artist with a jack-knife,and a white pine stick.

The last of the great whittlers rvas Lincoln. There are people still living in Illinois who saw him whittle. He could whittle. One sometimes wishes that our presentday leaders could do it. They need it. Whittling w,as a

state of mind. It induced thorrglht. It gave us that rvhimsical turn of mind that left us tolerant of others. and of their opinions.

Probably the great philosophers have ,always been whittlers. We are not told that Socrates whittled, but it is likely that he did. Mark Twain said that you could tell the kind of a man any man was, by the rvay he whittled.

Alas, we have become rvhittleless people !

We seem not to whet either our knives on our rvits.

Lumber Trade Prospects

Analvsis of Conditionsrrrf"T"i.,tL*"r,n" Industry in the

Washington, July lG-An unusually important survey and analysis of business conditions from the lumber industry's viewpoint, is furnished in a recent letter written by Dr. Wilson Compton, secretary and manager of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, in-answer to an inquiry from a southern lumber manufacturer. In his letter Dr. Compton says:

"MI analysis of business conditions, r,eflecting information of all varieties and from all types of sources, leads me to the conclusion that moderate industrial activity is all that can reasonably be expected until October. The industrial situation is exce, edingly uneven. More than a score of important industries show greater activity no.iv than last year. Others equally, or more important, show a volume of commodity movement from ten to fifty percent less than last year. Lumber conditions also are spotted and will, I think, remain so during the summer.- The South is better than the West: the North better than the South, and the hardwood industry in the North apparently in slightly b'etter shape than in the South, but no 6etter, ij as good as in the Appalachian territory.

"The forest products car-loading during the first five monhts ol 1924 are a little greater than the total volume during the same months of 1923. Manifestly the volume of lumber movem, ent has been greater than usual. Also the production has been'on a larger scale than usual during the past five years. Under similar circumstances hereto-fore it has always taken the lumber industry a period of

several months to adjust total production to the broad movements in demand. The result is a relative scarcity of stocks during the early months of a broad lumber buying movement, and ordinarily a compensating increase in unsold stocks during the period of decline in general buying. It takes the lumber manufacturing industry between four

Washington Lumber & Millwork Company Announces New L. A. Warehouse

The Washington Lumber & Millwork Company, of Los Angeles, James G. Browne, president and general manager' ,rrafes ."ltety interesting announcement in this issue. They have just fiiti.n.a the ionstruction of a big,and-modern, fire-pioof and dust-proof warehouse in Los. Ange.lgs, from rvhiih they will from this time on make their thipmgqts of truck dilivery, and mixed car orders for Southern California, supplementing their car lot delivery direct to dealers from their-mills at Tacoma, Washington.

It will be strictly a local service department. In it will be stocked only ihed stock and uppers' protected alike from rain, sun, dust, etc., thus ready for delivery in perfect condition to the dealer. It is a strictly wholesale department, installed for supplying the lumber dealer of Southern California.

The Washington Lumber and Millwork Co., with Mr. Browne as president and general manager' has been operatine in Caliiornia for the-last two years, specializing partiJularly in interior trim direct to the dealer from the Geo. M. Haity Lumber and Mfg. Co. o! Tacoma, whom- they ,ep..s.r,[ in this territory. - I-n,.addition to this exclusive connection other Northern Mill connections are being made, and they will be able to take excellent care of all the needs of the retailer, either from the local warehouse by truck or dirct car lots shipments from their mill'

Mr. Browne has had a great deal of experience in the milhvork game, having served his earl-y years of the lumber business i"ith " larg- Chicago rvarehouse, in the selling end, and later was cbnnected with the manufacturing end in 'i'acoma. Since coming to Los Angeles he has become very familiar with the retailers needs in that line and is peclliarly fitted for the managership of the new venture.

I\[r. Browne .announces that Mr. Walter R. Fifer will

Web R FtIq

be in their sales department. Mr. Fifer came to l-os Angeles about a year ago as special representative of the Williams Fir Finish Cb. and previous to that conducted a general wholesale business in Seattle. He is very'familiar with the mills and conditions in the Northwest and since coming to Los Angeles, has specialized as has Mr. Browne on the interior trim and worked uPPer needs of the retailer.

The Washington Mill & Lumber Company at lhe plesgqt time occupies o-ffices in the Merchants National Bank Building in Los Angeles, but splendid offices are being fitted up in the new waiehouse building, and within a ferv days the downtown offices will be closed, and the entire business transacted from the new building.

Referring to the new warehouse,'l\[r. Brorvne made the following slatement to The California Lumber Merchant:

"For some time our company has realized the need of a first class completely stocked warehouse in Los Angeles to supplement car load shipments direct from the mill to the dealers. This is norv made possible with the early completion of a specially constructed brick warehouse in the industrial district of the city, adjacent to not only the city yards but u'ell located for speedy deliverv to the outlying yards.

-

"Th's climate calls for special protection for high grade interior finish, casing base, mouldings and rvorked upPers and the new warehouse has been built *'ith that idea in mind. Built of brick and steel sash, concrete floors and concrete drivervays, we believe it is as near dust and heat proof as is possible, assuring the dealer of clean bright lumber.

"Trackage provides for unloading with dispatch directly into the warehouse and large driveways make it possible for delivery trucks to enter the building from three sides and load within, still protected from the sun and heat."

and six months to adjust itself, both going and coming.

"Manifestly there has been a large consumption of lumber this year. Current reports would indicate that lumber stocks in local yards and lumber using industries are relatively low. Probably they are. Such a situation is entirely logical. As long as production and shipments are notably out of joint, hand-to-mouth buying is to be expected. Particularly so when manufacturers and wholesalers, finding themselves with an array of ill-sorted stocks, are making 'special' offers in order to move their surplus items. That condition makes bargain hunters. Btargain hunters do not buy in advance.

"Th,ese, however, are somewhat superficial. For the lumber industry as a whole there is a much more important underlying condition. Most lumber is used in construction in some form. In l92O the average Southern Pine prices reached $5a.00; they are norv about $23.00. The Douglas Fir in t920 reached $44.00; it is now about 922.00. Between the peak in 7920 and at the present, lumber mill prices have been particularly cut in two.

"Generally speaking, lumber products constitute from one-quarter to one-third of finished cost of an average lumber built house. The cost of installation, general building trades labor, constitute between one-third and one-half. For the country as a whole wages in building trades are now greater than in 1920, or than any time heretofore. Please do not mistake me as setting up an argument for lower wages. I am discussing not wagei; as such,-which is a separate matter,-but the labor price in building costs. I point out simply the fact that the 30 per cent cost factor has declined from forty to fifty percent (ancl likewise I presume the retail prices in substantially similar propor- tion), while the forty percent factor in building costs has dropped not at all.

Oak Flooring

Manufactured from St. Francis Valley Oak

has long been known for the beautiful finished floors it makes.

Color and texture are exceptionally uniform and when manufactured with proper care it makes the very finest Oak Flooring it is possible to produce.

sqlffi

is most carefully manufactured from this Oak and mak., a finished floor which cannot be excelled. All flooring lumber is cut to size while green and great care is taken in drying, selecting and grading.

Moisture content is carefully gauged and every precau- tion taken to reduce cupping and buckling to a minimum. We will be glad to send samples to interested dealers.

"This situation is manifestly lop-sided. Reduction of building cost is not necessarily dependent upon lower wages. It is largely dependent upon lower labor cost. But such reduction can be accomplished as well by greater productivity and efficiency of labor as by decline in wages themselves. This lop-sided condition of industrial readjustment is apparent too in the wood-using industries, though probably not so pronounced as in the construction field. The hardwood industry is not so directly concerned in construction, as the softwood industry. It is not to be expected, however, and in fact it has not heretofore occurred, that there should be any marked difference between hardwoods and softwoods with respect to fundamental conditions.

"You have asked merelv for a statement of mv views. Manifectly I cannot make an inteligible response"without' this brief mention of facts rvhich lead ine to the conclusion that the lumber movement of the country as a whole during the summer and early fall will at best be moderate and that thereafter a gradual and fundamental recov€ry may be expected with considerable confidence."

Hoo-Hoo Club No. 9

At the regular luncheon of Hoo-Hoo Club No. t held at the Palace Hotel on June 26, there was a large crowd out to enjoy the fine program that was arranged for by Frank O'Connor of the Donovan Lumber Co., who was the chairman of the day.

After the luncheon, president R. A. Hiscox presided over a short business session. Frank Trower gave a short talk on the Klamath Falls Concat. A. B. Wastell, Vicegerent Snark of the Bay District, told of the monster Concat that is planned to be held in August. Bob Buzzard, of the Siskyou Lumber Co., and Bob Inglis, Stockton, also gave interesting talks. Kenneth Smith, of Long-Bell Lumber Co., was the winner of the attendance prize that was donated by Frank Paramino. The second prize,.a beautiful redwood bungalow, was won by Milt Conklin of the HartWood'Lumber Co.

President Hiscox then turned the meeting over to Frank O'Connor who introduced "Kirk" Smith who made a big hit with the crowd with his Scotch stories told in his wonderful Scotish dialect. He then introduced Capt. Walter J. Peterson, formerly Chief of Police of the city of Oakland and an ex-captain in the Army, as the speaker of the day, who gave an interesting and stirring address on citizenship that was greatly appreciated by the large audience.

President Hiscox announced that Chas. Moody, of the Sudden-Heitman Lumber Co., rvould have charge of the next meeting.

Ted Lawrence Entertains Los Angeles Hoo-Hoo

Ted Lawrence, Los Angeles manager for the Hart-Wood Lumber Company, was chairman at the Hoo-Hoo luncheon on Thursday, July 10.

The Snark again made himself conspicuous by being late, and by being fined. He will have to crank up his Studebaker a little earlier next Thursday. Before turning the meeting over to Mr. Lawrence, the Snark told the boys of the completion of his plans for a series of lectures on lumber, to be given by Professor Smiley, of Occidental College. There rvill be five of these talks, one each for the next five Thursdays, and Mr. Rosenberg urges all lumbermen to attend. The lectures will start Thursday, July l7th.

Ted Lawrence first told the meeting of the cancellation of the Ensenada trip, planned for Saturday of this week. The San Diego Hoo-Hoo Club had notified that the government regulations prevented their carrying out their plans.

He then introduced Mr. A. C. Hall, Los Angeles manager for Babsons Statistical Bureau. Mr. Hall spoke very interestingly on the business outlook from a statistical standpoint, and then answered a number of questions that rvere put at him by some of the boys.

Jack Dionne made an impromptu speech on the lumber market, that was very well received.

He reiterated his prediction that the rvest coast market was due to follow Southern Pine, in an uprvard movement and pointed out that we were due for better times, and in a verv short time.
