Emily chose to study this course because from a young age she had a passion for the equestrian world, not just the riding aspect but horses as an animal

"As I progressed with my riding I started to question how horses see, think and do This course allows me to explore these questions further and to expand upon my knowledge of equestrian as a sport, horses as animals and also as a business Upon completion of Year 1 and 2 (HNC/ HND) I am looking forward to delving deeper into the business side of the industry which is where my passion for horses has sparked an interest in turning it into a career

"My favourite module so far is Equine Nutrition I always want to make sure my horses are well and healthy and to do this you work from the inside out Upon completion of my degree I would like to work within an equestrian sales team, nutritionist or equine physiotherapist travelling nationally and internationally meeting and building a clientele and most importantly getting to work with different horses day in day out! The big dream for me is to have my own competition/sales yard but we will need to wait upon that winning lottery ticket to kickstart that business idea!"

"The facilities at SRUC Oatridge are really good! They suit the needs of all students across all courses Not to forget the location of the campus where you can walk round some beautiful routes when you need a break from studying "

Equine specific facilities are excellent with students riding regularly at the Scottish National Equestrian Centre and working within a very organised and accommodating yard.

"My advice to prospective students is to take every opportunity you can when on campus! There is so much to learn and get involved with outside college hours which can really benefit you in further career aspirations and give you a step up from competition If you are ever struggling or have a question, just speak to your tutors as they are always happy to help Remember no question is a silly question and if you are thinking it, it’s almost a guarantee someone else is as well "

BSc (Hons) Applied Animal Science

Laura applied to the course knowing that she wanted to work alongside animals but had little experience and so didn’t know what career and life path she wanted to take

"The Applied Animal Science course is so broad, we cover any subject you could dream of relating to animals -from Ethics to Neurology, Physiology to Data Science - there’s so many parts of the course to sink your teeth into that you are guaranteed to find your niche."

AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY

The UK Government's Strategy for Agricultural Technology acknowledged this as distinct sector .

In the field of Agriculture there are many essential processes occurring simultaneously . Technology is enabling the monitoring of these processes in fine detail and that data can now be gathered, transmitted, and assimilated as never before The data informs the decisionmaking process in far greater detail than was possible even a few years ago

Technology correctly deployed will improve the environmental and economic performance of the farm The reduction and tailoring of inputs to the exact requirement of the crop or livestock ensures a more profitable, environmentally sustainable farming process

Innovations in our agricultural systems can reduce the carbon footprint of our food supply, whilst advances in technologies can improve the management of wastes and control of pollution, making a career in the sector an excellent choice for those who

are passionate about climate change as well as technology

An Agricultural Technology graduate should be able to maintain and install a precision farming system in any global agricultural system through an understanding of what is being measured (Agricultural Science), how it is measured (Computer Science), what data is being generated, and how the consequent data flow can be transmitted and translated into a useable format using best practice and the latest technology

The market in Agricultural Technology is growing exponentially and is expected to value more than 24 billion pounds by 2027 Government support for the implementation of modern agricultural techniques will accelerate the adoption of these technologies but only if there is a workforce equipped to implement, manage and maintain these systems

There are exciting and rewarding careers emerging in Agricultural Technology utilising:

• Artificial Intelligence

• Robotics

• Engineering

• Big Data and Analytical Services

• Automation

• Cloud Computing

• RFID and Tracking

The course was a blend of theoretical and practical handson work with real industry supported projects to work on.

This course offered the practical aspect as well as lecture-based learning, which gave me an opportunity to develop hands-on experience and practical techniques while studying. This integrated approach to education gives me a competitive advantage when starting my career.

Practical skills and real-life handson experience are embedded into every course at SRUC.

The campus is well set up and resourced to provide practical handson experience with a large variety of animals.

As a student at SRUC you did a lot of outdoor and hands-on learning – sampling from rivers, looking at biodiversity, doing engineering by pulling things apart and putting them back together, trips to wind farms to learn about the renewable industry. Of all the education I’ve since gone on to do, my SRUC course was probably best course I’ve done which allows you to see the subject in real life and fully understand it and grasp it and get you involved in it.

“Soil Management has been a favourite so far We were shown different soil profiles, textures and found out how the properties affect our environment There was some lab-based work where we took soil samples to test for the phosphate and pH levels It was great to get some experience using lab equipment and how to analyse the results I am also looking forward to this year using GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping software as this is a desired skill to have for environmental jobs This is particularly cool for studying peatlands where this software maps

and shows the amount of carbon stored in different areas all over the world ”

“I chose SRUC as I had heard great things about the college from others who had previously studied here It is well known and revered across Scotland with a huge amount of research happening which also interested me for future academic opportunities I chose Edinburgh as it meant I didn’t have to move away but still allows the chance to get out into the field for certain modules

“I have been involved in a number of opportunities while studying here Firstly, being a student ambassador, I have been able to create content for social media, help the marketing team with projects and attend events happening around the country The best experience was the Royal Highland Show; based in SRUC’s marquee I engaged with the public about the college, demonstrated

some of the research going on, and made milkshakes with milk provided from one of SRUC’s farms! I am also the LGBTQ+ Officer for SRUCSA (the Students’ Association) so I am trying to set up some groups across different campuses to increase inclusivity I am also a class representative for my course where I take feedback from my class to meetings with staff to help improve the course and student life This lead to a job opportunity to train new reps in other colleges ”

“When I finish I am interested in working to improve environmental policy, possibly at a government level Although, research would also be an avenue I’d like to explore, potentially looking at peatlands and carbon capture . There are so many options to consider as every module has been engaging!

FIELD TRIPS & VISITS

The highlights were the field trips to various gardens, nurseries and research facilities. These visits really enhance the lectures and bring a new dynamic to each module.

At SRUC, learning isn’t confined to the classroom! Whatever course you’re studying you’ll find that study tours, field trips, and real-life case studies all feature.

Our smaller teaching groups mean that we are able to arrange regular visits to relevant industry locations to meet with experts working in your field.

I loved meeting new people and also going on some fantastic field trips to highlight aspects of our course.

I loved all the field trips that we have taken as part of our modules to the zoo or to research farms. SRUC has many opportunities to expand your network outside of the classroom.

At SRUC I’ve particularly enjoyed the field trips I’ve been on as a part of many different modules. The opportunity to get into the field provides an application of classroom based learning. It also gives you a chance to meet new people and make connections in your chosen industry.

Chris has always been interested in the environment and spent a lot of his life camping, hill walking, canoeing, and sailing. I still harboured a flame for environmental studies and given the direction the world was moving regarding net zero, it felt like the right choice to make "

"I chose SRUC because it offers a more practical based way of teaching than other Universities/Colleges and is orientated more towards the end goal of employment rather than just the achieving of a qualification.”

"My favourite module is Ecology and Ecosystems It gave a good taste of the practical side of environmental management, allowing you as the student to analyse the impacts of how human activities affect the environment in a very tangible way This module also tied in well with other course modules such as Pollution Management, Classification and Identification and Biodiversity Conservation "

"I have enjoyed meeting like-minded people with similar aspirations I enjoy the practical elements of the teaching such as field trips and experiments. I’ve enjoyed finding out what is being done globally and what I can do individually to contribute to net zero targets As a mature student I relish the realisation that I am capable of taking a new life direction, learning new relevant skills, which will add value to future employment "

"I have an interest in environmental policy A recent careers event at SRUC highlighted Scottish Government roles around invasive marine species and its corresponding policies which seemed like an interesting avenue to pursue "

"Being a mature student, my core skills were learned over 20 years ago so sometimes I have to do some refreshment learning before I tackle the module learning e g I had to familiarise myself with a scientific calculator again before doing some calculations in the Fundamentals of Geospatial Approaches and Data Analysis module "

"Revisiting education is one of the best decisions I have made in my life so far Education and learning do not stagnate; just because the answer was A yesterday, does not mean the answer will be A today What’s amazing is, I get to be part of tomorrow’s answer SRUC have made me realise that education is a lifelong process which should be embraced

Stella Jardine

HND Horticulture with Plantsmanship

Stella chose SRUC after researching online and discovering real student experiences which really encouraged her to take the leap "After leaving high school with only two higher qualifications, I worked for eight years with additional support needs children which I loved but was an extremely underfunded and a physically and mentally challenging job I knew it was time for a change but was very nervous and unsure about what direction in life to take I truly never imagined to be where I am now, back then I never even knew what ‘horticulture’ meant, let alone studying and finding jobs related to it I applied very last minute to the Horticulture course at Edinburgh, hoping to meet people with similar interests and build on my knowledge I had seen a lot of the SRUC social media posts that gave me an insight into the courses and made me even more intrigued about what I could learn ”

“After an amazing first year studying Horticulture at the Kings Buildings campus with brilliant lecturers and facilities, I knew swapping to the Horticulture with Plantsmanship course would benefit me as my interests lie in plant collections, particularly indoor tropical collections The people I have met have such broad knowledge and often niche specialities that I can’t help but be encouraged and learn from them. I am often finding myself imagining my future bigger and better than I ever would have a couple years ago "

"My favourite module is Plant Classification and Systematics run by an extremely knowledgeable lecturer. The plant identification tests broaden my general plant knowledge We learn in detail about various plant families including the history and evolutions as well as morphology and taxonomy We also complete pencil drawing studies of different species, which I particularly enjoy as I can put my forgotten artistic skills to the test "

"The highlights for me so far have been meeting new friends with similar interests that I can talk to for hours about all things plant related, learning from knowledgeable lecturers, receiving support that has built my self-confidence, and getting to study something I love every day "

"I never imagined myself capable of studying again after my struggles as a child and teen in school I reached out to student support for help as I knew there was something different about my learning style I got so much support from the team, emotionally as well as financially, to finally get a diagnosis and at the age of 23 I was diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. The things I struggled with my whole life finally had a name and now I receive support to understand and overcome my learning difficulties."

"The facilities at SRUC are brilliant! All the tools you could ever need for the course are available for use Choosing to study this course has been one of the best decisions of my life I am hoping to get a job in a glasshouse caring for plant collections, or possibly taking a different route in horticulture altogether and further developing my skills and knowledge Wherever I end up career-wise I know I will be a lot happier than I was before "

Darren Moore

BSc (Hons) Garden and Greenspace Design

After 20 years in landscape construction, Darren realised that it was now or never to take the steps towards his ultimate goal of becoming a landscape architect and develop his creativity skills: "I chose SRUC because of its excellent reputation in the horticulture and garden design industry as well as their links with Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens My highlights have been the trip to Cologne, gaining new digital media skills, and the friendships that I have built with my classmates

"My favourite module was International Study, we got to visit Cologne and had the opportunity to research and reinterpret our own designs on a real public greenspace project in the city I would love to continue my studies after fourth year to Masters level and/or enter the workplace at a landscape architecture company

"The facilities are great! We have our own design classroom as well as brilliant, accessible library The work of our lecturers has been so helpful and supportive "

And what advice would Darren pass on to other students? "As I approach 40, just remember that it’s never too late! Oh and… time management, time management, time management! It has been a struggle at times to manage study, work and our busy toddler at home, but that is becoming easier as times goes on and will be worth it in the end "

Progression

Those who have the appropriate higher level school qualifications are able to apply for a degree course and will study with us for 3-4 years until they graduate, just like with any other university Some of our students however may take different routes through the courses offered Some students may apply initially for a HNC or HND and then continue onto a degree once they have completed those first 1-2 years. Others begin on college level qualifications such as National Certificates, and decide to stay with us progressing from one level of study to the next

Advanced Entry

If you have appropriate qualifications such as HNC/HND or Foundation Degree, you will be able to apply for advanced entry into SRUC’s degree courses, to avoid unnecessary repeated years Contact our admissions team for advice

SRUC’s Skills Academy offer a wide range of skills development courses Students at SRUC are able to access these training courses, often at a reduced rate, in order to enhance their skills and employability

“Distance learning has given me the opportunity to get back to education whilst still working and living my usual life. It’s been an incredible experience which I cannot recommend highly enough. I thought it might be quite a solitary way of learning but there’s a real community in our class folk even though we are spread all over the place. I’ve enjoyed it so much, I don’t want it to end.”

Postgraduate Study

Once you have completed an Honours degree you may decide to further your specialist knowledge or career enhancement with postgraduate study SRUC offers a number of MSc and Postgraduate Diploma courses, or you could even embark on a project with one of our internationally respected research teams and work towards gaining your PhD!

“I decided to do the Modern Apprenticeship rather than a full-time course as I was gaining experience whilst working as well as undertaking the college work. I would certainly recommend doing an MA to others. It allows you to gain qualifications whilst getting paid and also gives you more experience in the workplace.”
Daniel Murdoch Modern Apprentice
SRUC offers courses at a wide range of levels, from access courses to PhDs. We try to offer students as much flexibility as possible in their studies; many of our courses are offered part-time as well as full-time and some by online distance learning .

Apprenticeships Work

An Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to earn a salary whilst gaining work experience and a nationally recognised qualification.

Embarking on an apprenticeship programme allows you to progress in your career path and become a valuable asset to current and future employers

To start an apprenticeship, you must already be in employment Apprenticeship programmes are a three-way partnership between SRUC as the training provider, your employer, and you as the apprentice

There are a range of apprenticeships at different levels available to anyone aged over 16 The most common entry level programme is a modern apprenticeship This can be suited to those progressing from a college course, career changers or school leavers, as a progression from senior phase subjects or SRUC’s school level courses

Apprenticeships normally take between 1–3 years to complete SRUC deliver a range of apprenticeships including agriculture, land-based engineering, forestry, horticulture, gamekeeping, equine, conservation, greenkeeping and vet nursing

Skills Academy

Lauren Young

Modern Apprentice, Agriculture SCQF Level 6

Lauren left her post as a dental nurse to join the agriculture apprenticeship programme based at Ayr after securing a full-time post at a dairy farm in Catrine, Ayrshire After taking on part-time work milking at the farm Lauren developed a real passion for rural life and the variety of work that farming offered Lauren who previously considered herself a “townie”, not from a farming background, has fully embraced the lifestyle and is now the secretary for her local Young Farmers association which she says has led to many new friendships and lots of socialising. Reflecting on her choice to change career paths she has no regrets “It’s hard work but no day is the same, I’m really enjoying the variety of the course as well as the job and looking forward to doing my tractor driving training, I can’t think of a job I’d rather be doing

SRUC’s Skills Academy offers a wide range of short training courses which seek to address workforce skills gaps and give our students the opportunity to gain industry recognised tickets and work-based hands on training from the outset of your learning journey and career We provide training in a range of activities from tractor driving and chainsaw operation to drone and GIS use; specialist livestock courses and peatland restoration project management

SRUC’s Skills Academy will continue to grow our lifelong learning offer, along with education and consultancy to deliver a range of industry responsive accredited training programmes, ensuring the needs of our learners, partners and the rural economy are met as the sector continues to grow and evolve nationally and globally

Postgraduate Study

SRUC prides itself on developing its students and staff to lead the way . Through postgraduate study, students deepen their knowledge in their chosen area to give them a distinct advantage over their industry peers .

Part-time distance learning courses are the perfect choice for those who can’t step away from their commitments for the duration of a traditional Masters Online classes and assessments allow students to continue to work wherever they are without having to worry about moving home or commuting The parttime structure breaks the masters down into three distinct years which all have a qualification at the end. Students who successfully complete year 1 are awarded a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert), those who progress and successfully complete year 2 receive a Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip), and the full Masters (MSc) is awarded after year 3

SRUC also offers a number of taught postgraduate courses which you can study full-time, and Master of Research (MRes) programmes where you are supervised to undertake a research project in order to complete your Masters qualification. We work closely in partnership with the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow to deliver a postgraduate course portfolio rich with the academic rigour and industry relevance to advance your understanding, preparing you for the next step in your career or studies

SRUC works with industry-leading experts in the land-based sector whose knowledge and cutting-edge research feed into the courses to ensure what is being taught is always current, relevant and useful This is vital in this sector, where new technology, scientific findings and government legislation all contest to drive the industry forwards

MSc Organic Farming

Jane came from working on her family’s organically certified farm in Ireland to develop her knowledge and understanding of organic farming Despite having an already sound working knowledge of the industry, the MSc offered Jane the chance to meet others from a similar background to herself as well as those who are just beginning their journey into organic farming

The friends she made during the course stay in touch and continue to share knowledge and experiences as they all progress further in their careers and studies . Jane’s thirst for knowledge continued on from being awarded her MSc and she went on to study a PhD in multispecies grasslands
