TARTU PÕHIKOOLIDE 2. KLASSI KLASSIJUHATAJATE ARVAMUS ÕPILASTE KÄTEPESU SOODUSTAVATEST JA TAKISTAVATEST TEGURITEST Tartu Basic Schools’ Second-Grade Teachers’ Opinion on the Beneficial and Non-Beneficial Factors of Pupils’ Hand Hygiene Susanna Koger, Triinu Tarto, Siret Läänelaid Abstract Contagious diseases in childhood are a serious problem in Estonia and in the rest of the world. For school children, infectious diseases also cause absence from school. It is known that the most effective way to avoid contagious diseases is proper hand hygiene. There have been a lot of studies about the importance of handwashing interventions and their effect on preventing diseases, but few of them have researched the influencing factors of handwashing. The purpose of the thesis was to describe Tartu basic schools’ second-grade teachers’ opinion on the beneficial and non-beneficial factors of elementary school pupils’ hand hygiene. During the study, 12 class teachers were interviewed using semi-structured questionnaires. Interviews were analysed using the inductive content analysis method. The results showed that the beneficial factors for proper hand hygiene were the following: availability of resources and facilities; time; positive influence; the pupils’ positive habits; the guidance by the teachers and hand washing interventions. The non-beneficial factors were: lack of facilities, resources (warm water, soap, paper towels), time and positive influences; the height of facilities and the pupils’ own priorities. Keywords: hand washing, hand hygiene, beneficial factors, non-beneficial factors. 9
