PSÜHHIAATRIAÕDEDE VASTU SUUNATUD PATSIENTIDE VÄGIVALDNE KÄITUMINE NING ÕDEDE HOIAKUD SEOSES VÄGIVALDSE KÄITUMISE VALLANDUMISE JA JUHTIMISEGA Violent Behaviour of Patients against Psychiatric Nurses and Attitudes of Nurses to the Onset and Management of Violent Behaviour Alar Lokk, Elina Osi, Margit Lenk-Adusoo Abstract Patients’ violent behaviour is a growing problem in all wards of psychiatric clinics. Based on literary sources, this article describes factors that contribute to or prevent the psychiatric nurses’ falling a victim to patients’ violent behaviour and the attitudes of nurses towards the occurrence and management of this behaviour. The results indicate that a number of organizational and personal factors contribute to the psychiatric nurses’ becoming victims of violence. Factors that prevent nurses from becoming victims include the existence of support systems, counselling programs, integrated guidelines and action plans. Training and in-department meetings also play an important role in preventing and managing patient violence. In general, psychiatric nurses believe that the onset of patients’ violent behaviour is mostly related to internal/personal factors and the patient’s psychiatric disorders. The attitudes that psychiatric nurses have towards the onset of patient violence are influenced by their prior experiences, the level of perceived risk and the patient’s history. Psychiatric nurses believe that, both psychosocial and controlling strategies, including segregation and restraint, are needed to manage the patients’ violent behaviour.
