Abstract A mental health problem during pregnancy is a serious complication, it couses difficulties to cope with everyday life, lowering the quality of life, affecting the growth, development and well-being of the child indirectly. Mental health and coping problems disrupt the functioning of a positive and supportive family model. Psychological distress experienced during pregnancy affects motherhood negatively. Mental well-being is the most affected by satisfaction with the support received, not by the actual amount of support. Women who receive ongoing support for mental health problems are less likely to develop postpartum depression compared to those who do not have access to pregnancy support. Intervention during pregnancy is considered to be the most effective. Routine antenatal and postnatal appointments give midwives the unique opportunity to talk about emotional health and identify potential mental health and coping issues. The ability to notice and pay attention to a woman’s mood and behaviour is important for the implementation of the integrated care model presented. The most appropriate self-assessment tool is the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale. According to recommendations women’s mental health should be assessed at least once during the perinatal period. 229
