NEGLEKT EHK IGNOREERIMISSÜNDROOM PÄRAST INSULTI JA SELLE KÄSITLUS TAASTUSRAVIS Neglect Syndrome after Stroke and its Management in Rehabilitation Raili Luig, Ivi Vaher Abstract Neglect is a common post-stroke neurological syndrome that is associated with poorer clinical outcomes and it affects negatively patients’ functional independence. Despite its negative impact, it is often overlooked in rehabilitation. The purpose of this article is to explain the nature of the neglect syndrome and find out the methods used for its assessment and rehabilitation. The theoretical review that the article is based on is an analysis of 58 relevant literature sources. The central problem of neglect is the attentional bias towards the side of space ipsilateral to the lesion, which causes patients not to pay attention to one side of their body and/or space. Neglect may manifest in various modalities and ranges of space and the symptoms are exacerbated by the patients’ impaired awareness of illness and attentional problems. Various paper-and-pencil instruments are suitable for screening purposes. Given the heterogeneity of neglect and the possibility that it manifests only in dynamic everyday situations, functional assessment is also important. The Catherine Bergego Scale is the only functional assessment battery that assesses the presence of neglect in all ranges of space and in more than one modality. Methods used in neglect rehabilitation aim to retrain or compensate impaired functions. Despite showing promising results, their effectiveness cannot be supported or refuted. Future directions of neglect rehabilitation are various technology-based methods. Keywords: neglect, stroke, rehabilitation
