Abstract The purpose of the final thesis was to identify artifacts that can be caused by the patient or by the radiographer and possible ways to reduce them when performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head. Nowadays, MRI is often used to do examinations of the head. In diagnosis the visibility of good distinctive characters and pathological tissue or injury is important. The radiographer’s role is to perform high quality image because correct diagnosis depends on it. The images may be corrupt by any kind of artifacts that may affect the final diagnosis. The artifacts may be caused by the patient and by the radiographer. Different materials are used in modern medicine which may contain ferromagnetic particles, which corrupt image quality. The world of cosmetics is evolving, and studies show that most of them contain metal particles that can cause artifacts. Involuntary patient movements and bad immobilization by the radiographer before examination corrupt images by motion artifacts. Image quality may be corrupted also by the radio waves leaking to the MRI room. The radiographer must monitor the necessary patient parameters before and during the examination to avoid disturbing artifacts. There are different strategies and technical options to avoid or reduce a variety of artifacts while the continuous evolution in the beauty. Due to the continuous evolution of the beauty and medicine world it is necessary to renew the opportunities to reduce or avoid artifacts. Keywords: artifact, magnetic resonance imaging, head MRI, reduction opportunities 99
