Margit Lenk-Adusoo, Kati Rannit
Abstract The aim of this paper is to describe the methodology of the Open Dialogue approach and the outcomes of implementing the Open Dialogue approach in the event of first-episode psychosis. This paper is based on a theoretical overview of literature. The study materials are evidence-based and authoritative research articles. 18 out of the 21 sources used in this research, are professional research articles (9 empirical and 9 theoretical research articles). This paper gives an overview of the main principles of the Open Dialogue approach as well as of the implementation of these principles and the outcomes among the patients with first-episode psychosis. The author considers this paper to be useful evidencebased information regarding the Open Dialogue approach that could be used by the nurses working in the field of mental health. Furthermore, this paper could engender discussion on a possibility to implement the Open Dialogue approach in Estonia. The main aspects of implementing the Open Dialogue approach involve providing urgent response after the first contact is being made by the patient or a relative, avoiding hospitalisation, if possible, and involving the patient as well as his or her family and social network in the treatment process and decision making regarding the treatment. The patients treated with the implementation of the Open Dialogue approach have less relapses. Also, a significant amount of those patients are able to return to their studies or work. 131
