Complications of haemophilia, their impact on patient coping and nursing activities in preventing and/or management of the complications
Margarita Gradickiene, Piret Simm-Pärle
Abstract The present thesis is a review of literature describing the complications of haemophilia, their impact on patient wellbeing and nursing activities in preventing and/or managing the complications. A total of 40 literature sources were used for the thesis, including 17 research articles, one theoretical study and four review articles. The research articles have been published between 2005 and 2015 in English and were found using online research databases PubMed and EBSCO (CINAHL with Full Text, Academic Search Complete, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, MEDLINE). The complications of haemophilia include severe bleeding into joints accompanied by acute pain, muscle bleeds, synovitis, haemophilic arthropathy accompanied by chronic pain, osteopenia and osteoporosis, anxiety, depressed mood and depression. The impact of the complications on patient wellbeing is mainly manifested in impaired balance, frequent falls and partial self-care deficit. The nursing activities in preventing the complications include counselling the patient on the importance of regular physical activity, the use of protective equipment and orthopaedic devices, maintaining normal body weight, recognising the early symptoms of bleeding and implementing the necessary measures. 154
