The health problems of an adult with non-celiac gluten sensitivity and the nurses’ options for relieving those health problems

Abstract The aim of this research paper is to describe non-celiac gluten sensitivity, the health problems of an adult with non-celiac gluten sensitivity and the nurses’ options for relieving those health problems using evidence-based literature. The total number of scientific sources used in this paper is 19 scientific articles. Also three handbooks and two website were used. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a disease with pathogenesis that is still to be explained but it is mostly associated with the innate immune system. An adult with non-celiac gluten sensitivity develops problems of physical, mental and social health when ingesting gluten. The physical health problems involve gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome, and extraintestinal problems such as iron deficiency anaemia and deficiency of vitamins (B-group vitamins and vitamin D) and minerals (calcium). The most common mental health problem is the exacerbation of pre-existing mental health problems and the most common social health problem is social seclusion. The results of this research study show that the nurses’ options for relieving the adults’ health problems involve mainly patient education and nutritional counselling.
