Manicure and pedicure service providers’ awarness of potential biological risks and preventive measures involved in their work, an example of service providers’ work in the city of Tartu

Abstract Manicure and pedicure are cosmetic beauty treatments for the fingernails, consisting filing and shaping of the free edge, pushing and clipping any nonliving tissue (cuticle), massage of the hand, and the application of fingernail polish. In the case when the service provider fails to take appropriate measures to prevent biological risk factors these procedures may be accompanied by transferring an infectious disease. Insufficient knowledge of infectious diseases, prevention measures, and the rules may be accomapanied by endangering the health of the service provider as well as the clients. The aim of this thesis was to identify the awareness of occupational biological risks and preventiion measures among the manicure and pedicure service providers in the city of Tartu. The study was carried out between October and December 2015. A total of 82 licensed companies in Tartu offering manicure and pedicure services were visited; home service providers were contacted by e-mail. A total of 61 service providers were included in the study, 54% of them applied additionally artificial nails.
