Effects of low-frequency pulsed electro-magnetic field on patients with chronic low back pain on physical performance and pain
Relika Jaansoo, Kirkke Reisberg
Abstract The aim of the current study was to evaluate the immediate and long-term post-therapy effects of low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (lfPEMF) on pain intensity and physical performance in patients with chronic low back pain. The study involved 4 participants with chronic low back pain, aged 21-40 years. One patient discontinued the participation in the study, the reasons were not related to the study. The study was conducted in the facilities of Tartu Health Care College. 9 lfPEMF procedures were carried out during 3 weeks. Frequency of 15 Hz and magnetic induction of 144 gauss were used and each procedure lasted for 20 minutes. lfPEMF therapy was applied to the lower back region by a specific device (Easy Terza Serie, ASA, Italy). Physical performance was measured with performance-specific tests: 30-Second Chair-Rise Test; 30-Second Up & Go Test; 30-Second Stair Climbing Test; Five-Minute Walking Test. The intensity of low back pain was measured using the Borg Scale. Patients were also evaluated 4 weeks after the end of therapy to assess the post-therapy effects. It was concluded that lfPEMF therapy was effective for reducing low back pain and improving physical performance, the effects were sustained for one month after the therapy.
