The famous Auschwitz concentration camps existed here during World War II. The city has a population of 40,324 inhabitants. The city is located 50 km west of Krakow at the confluence of the Vistula and Soła rivers. Oświęcim is located at the intersection of National Road no. 44 with the local road no. 933,
and is at the northern end of the local road no. 948. The old town of Oświęcim is located east of the river Sola, with the Main Square in the center. The railway station is across the river in the northwest of the city, with the main museum in the west of the city. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is located in the village of Brzezinka, west of the railway station. The chemical plants are located east of the city. The city’s main bus station is in the eastern part of the city. Rail services are available to Krakow, Katowice and Czechowice-Dziedzice, and internationally to Vienna and Prague.
