No estamos solos

El 70º aniversario del Festival de San Sebastián coincide con otra feliz circunstancia, el regreso a la normalidad tras dos años de incertidumbre. Y contrariamente a todos los presagios que hablaban del aislamiento social como el signo de los nuevos tiempos, el contacto con los demás es ahora más deseado que nunca. Precisamente el ansia de calor humano caracteriza a las películas que este año conforman la programación de las diferentes secciones del Festival, que incluye tantro obras de consagrados maestros como de nuevos talentos, además de la cantera de jóvenes promesas que presentarán sus cortometrajes en la sección Nest.

Y no hay que olvidar que dos importantes figuras de la reciente historia del cine nos acompañarán en nuestro 70º cumpleaños: David Cronenberg y Juliette Binoche recibirán el Premio Donostia en homenaje a toda su carrera. Y la exposición Imagina un Festival nos permitirá recordar los grandes hitos de la historia del Festival de San Sebastián, un certamen que desde hace siete décadas nos recuerda que, gracias al cine, nunca estamos solos.

We’re not alone

San Sebastian Festival’s 70th anniversary coincides with another happy occurrence, the return to normal life following two years of uncertainty. And, contrary to the forecasts referring to social isolation as a sign of the new times, contact with others is something everybody wants more than ever. Precisely the yearning for human warmth characterises the films making up this year’s programme in the different Festival sections, including the works of both hallowed masters and of new talents, as well as the brood of young hopefuls who will show their short films in the Nest section.

Nor must we forget two big names from the field of recent film history who will accompany us on our 70th anniversary: David Cronenberg and Juliette Binoche will each receive a Donostia Award in tribute to their careers. And the Imagine a Film Festival exhibition will enable us to remember the major landmarks in the history of the San Sebastian Festival, an event which has spent seven decades reminding us that, thanks to the cinema, we’re never alone.

El 4 de octubre de 2007, Arantza, directora de la película, es detenida y llevada a prisión. De aquellos días conserva algunos recuerdos: las interminables vueltas por el patio, los campeonatos de natación, el periplo carcelario de Rasha... Ópera prima seleccionada en Ikusmira Berriak y WIP Europa y ganadora del premio a la mejor película en Doclisboa y Turín.

On October 4th, 2007 Arantza, the director of the film, was detained and taken to prison. She remembers a few things about those days: endlessly walking around the prison exercise yard, swimming competitions, Rasha’s prison journey… The debut film from the winner of the Best Film Award at Doclisboa and Torino was selected for the Ikusmira Berriak programme and for WIP Europa.

Historia honetan bi arnas kontatzen dira; Iratxe Sorzabalena eta Mari Nieves Diazena, bere amarena. Biek ala biek, bakoitzak bere modura, torturak eragiten duen arnas falta sufritu dute, beste hainbat sufrikariorekin batera. Bi arnas torturaren gaineko testigantza bat da, bidegabekeria baten isla eta sekula eskaini ez den elkarrizketa bat.

En esta historia se cuentan dos respiraciones: la de Iratxe Sorzabal y la de Mari Nieves Díaz, madre de Iratxe. Ambas, cada una a su manera, han padecido la falta de aliento que provoca la tortura, junto a otros numerosos sufrimientos. Bi arnas es un testimonio sobre la tortura, reflejo de una injusticia y un diálogo nunca antes ofrecido.

This story is the tale of two breaths: that of Iratxe Sorzabal and that of Mari Nieves Díaz, Iratxe’s mother. Both, each in their own way, have suffered the lack of breath caused by torture, together with many other kinds of suffering. Bi arnas is a testimonial on torture, the reflection of an injustice and a dialogue never offered before.
