E. Escribir mi opinión

The link question on the Higher Level paper requires you to express your opinion on one of two statements linked to a reading comprehension. To be well prepared for this question, you should practise writing your opinion on a variety of different general topics. It is not advisable to learn any essays off by heart, but rather develop a good level of vocabulary and the ability to structure a clear argument. You should structure your answer as follows:
d

• Introduction – State your opinion. Say whether or not you agree with the statement given and briefly outline why. Introduce your three main points.

• Development – Aim to make at least three points. The points must argue your opinion of the statement and not wander off topic. It should be your own personal opinion so there is no need to lift chunks of text from the reading comprehension, but rather base your arguments on your own thoughts and experiences. • Conclusion – Finish your answer by summing up your argument and restating your stance on the statement. The exam paper suggests you write 80–150 words. However, high-achieving students always write 150 words or more, so aim for the higher end of the recommended word count and even try to fill an A4 page.
C
Write in paragraphs, with separate paragraphs for the introduction, the conclusion and each of the points.

The link question is marked out of 50. Twenty-five marks are awarded for content, so you must stick to the title and not stray from the topic. Students who achieve the highest marks in this category are able to clearly and coherently argue their opinion. The other 25 marks are awarded for language, so it is important to always check back over spellings, verb endings and adjective agreement after writing your piece.
