A history based on innovation

Brunel University London has a proud history stretching over 200 years.

Our namesake, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, embodied the self-reliance, hard work and inventiveness which was a core achievement of his time as a nineteenth century engineer. This man, by sheer brilliance of invention and force of will, helped transform modern transport, engineering and architecture. He lived in a society that recognised the vital interaction between the worlds of art, industry and science.

These qualities are still at the core of our University today. Our graduates embody his spirit and stand out to employers.

Our Royal Charter was awarded in 1966 but our foundations trace back much further to 1798 through our predecessor colleges including Maria Grey, Shoreditch and Acton Technical College.

Brunel’s original focus was in engineering, science, technology, education and management; but mergers in the last 25 years added expertise in new subject areas such as performing arts, humanities, health, sport sciences and business as well as, most recently, our Medical School.

The University continues to offer a broad-based technical provision. Brunel’s pioneering use of ‘sandwich courses’ in 1957 – a work placement year that has now been adopted by many other universities – is just as relevant today.

We continue to place high value on immersive workplace experiences and industry input for our students, working with employers in business, industry and the public sector to combine teaching and research excellence with the practical and entrepreneurial approach pioneered by our namesake.

Inspirational teaching

Few universities offer a better learning environment than we do. You’ll learn from leading academics who produce world-leading research which has practical benefits for real life situations, promotes innovative solutions and delivers inspiration daily.

Our expert academics will be with you every step of the way. Supporting, nurturing and inspiring you to make brilliant discoveries and develop your academic confidence.

Past students have developed their ideas and gone on to form companies and disrupt markets. If our learning opportunities don’t blow your mind, they’ll certainly fill it.

9 8

Bringing your learning to life

University teaching and learning will be different at Brunel from anything you’ve experienced before.

You’ll develop skills for independent learning, critical analysis and research. You’ll learn from world-leading academics and, just as importantly, spend time learning with your peers and developing your knowledge and skills through private study. With the support of your personal tutor throughout your degree, you won’t be on your own.

How you’re assessed will depend on your course, and will vary from coursework to presentations, lab tests or exams.

Teaching methods

All of our courses are supported by a range of teaching methods. Lectures will be given to introduce a topic and summarise key themes, and your critical thinking and writing skills will be nurtured and developed through seminars. Smaller seminar or tutorial classes will provide more opportunities to ask questions and discuss ideas with your peers.

Many of our programmes have a practical learning element. For some, this will take place in a laboratory. Others might find themselves learning in a theatre, clinical simulation suite or a studio.

It’s important to realise that on top of classes, you’ll also be required to study in your own time. This

independent study typically involves reading, group projects, online tasks or preparation for a presentation.

You’ll be asked to delve into much greater detail with study topics. This will include thinking in new ways and considering cutting-edge theories.

Work placements

Whether your placement is for six weeks, six months or a full academic year, it will allow you to get hands-on experience. You might undertake clinical experience with placement partners such as King’s College Hospital or an industrial placement in business at IBM. This valuable opportunity will equip you with the skills and experience you need to excel in the job market.

Final year projects

Your final year project will showcase your learning and help you develop new skills. Depending on your course, this could be a dissertation, a work-based project, performance, or a scientific research study.

Online resources

Our virtual learning environment provides all the information you’ll need to succeed on your course. Here you’ll find recordings of all lectures, as well as lecture materials, learning resources and reading lists.

11 10

Supporting your every step

Here are just some of the ways we help you with your learning...

Our Academic Liaison Librarians are on hand to help too. They run our LibSmart programme which is designed to help you get the most out of these resources, providing training on researching, referencing and avoiding plagiarism. brunel.ac.uk/library

Academic Skills Service (ASK)

The ASK team provides a welcoming and inclusive environment, offering guidance in writing and learning, as well as maths and statistics. They’ll help you to develop your academic and research skills, and how to study more effectively and independently, for life-long learning. brunel.ac.uk/ask

HeadStart helps students from under-represented groups to make the transition into studying in higher education. If eligible, we’ll introduce you to the academic skills required to succeed at university,

give you a sense of what is expected of you and familiarise you with the support services available. brunel.ac.uk/headstart

Academic English

If English isn’t your first language, Brunel Language Centre offers additional support through individual academic consultations, group classes and workshops. Areas covered include academic writing (e.g. technical reports, critiques, proposals and dissertations), seminar skills, presentations, reading and listening skills, pronunciation and grammar. brunel.ac.uk/language-centre

Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL)

PAL supports new students to develop the independent study skills required for a successful university life. Sessions are led by second or third year students who have experience of your course. They’re designed to give you greater confidence with your academic studies, through creative and fun activities. They also give you an opportunity to discuss ideas, broaden your knowledge, build friendships and ask questions about university life. brunel.ac.uk/PAL

Your personal tutor

You’ll be assigned a personal tutor to support your academic and personal development. They’ll be in regular contact with you to discuss your academic progress or any other support you may need, in confidence.

You’ll discover how the law can be used to marginalise and criminalise some communities, while ignoring the crimes of the rich and powerful. You’ll learn from academic staff who are actively engaged in criminological research, and their knowledge feeds directly into your degree.

Your course is built on understanding the importance of theory based on evidence. You’ll evaluate concepts of crime and deviance and we’ll encourage you to engage in debates about race, gender, migration, social harms, as well as a wide variety of other topics. You’ll learn skills in quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, which will allow you to challenge debates as they evolve.

Careers and your future

Employment opportunities for criminologists can be found across the public, private and voluntary sectors, including different criminal justice system sectors such as police services, border security, the National Crime Agency, prisons and probation services. You’ll also be well-placed to take up roles within related services such as addiction support services, youth services, and victim support services.

A criminology degree provides an excellent grounding if you’re thinking of continuing your studies with a conversion course, where you can go on to practice law. Your course will also provide you with the critical thinking skills that are sought after by third-sector organisations that challenge issues of human rights violations in areas such as migration, incarceration, and protest both in the UK and internationally.

I come from a Traveller background and would encourage anyone, whether they belong to a marginalised community or not, to study criminology. You’ll gain skills that allow you to work towards change from inside or outside of the criminal justice system.

Geography

Geography provides a unique insight into how social and environmental processes together shape the world we inhabit. Through human geography, we understand the interactions of societies, cultures, economies, and political systems. Physical geography examines the dynamics of landscapes and the environment. Brunel is especially well placed to bring these sides of the subject together in programmes that explore some of the most challenging issues that confront our world, how they affect different groups of people, and ways in which they might be addressed.

A geography degree at Brunel will provide you with opportunities for learning in and beyond the classroom. You’ll examine the environment, people and the world we live in though lectures, fieldwork and practical work experience. Our assessments require you to apply your learning to real world situations, and present your ideas using different techniques. In your final year, you’ll develop advanced teamwork and leadership skills by applying your studies to a community-based project. Through your dissertation, you’ll practise the skills of planning and undertaking research independently. By the end of your studies, you’ll have developed the skills and knowledge you need to make change in the world.

Careers and your future

Once you graduate, you’ll be ready to begin a career in areas such as local and national government, the environmental sector, international development, leisure and tourism, disaster risk management, communications, transport, planning, research and academia.

• Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery MBBS

Brunel also offers the following integrated master’s degrees:

Brunel Pathway College also offers foundation courses in a range of other subjects for students who don’t meet the entry criteria.

For more information see page 50.

First degrees are usually awarded with honours and classified into first class, second class (with upper and lower divisions) or third class. You’re admitted to the University on the expectation that you’ll achieve an honours degree. Some departments offer a less demanding ordinary degree course if your performance proves not to be of honours standard before the final year.

The three-part year

Brunel’s course structure is based on three periods of study per year. There are two teaching terms, running from September to December and from January to Easter and Easter to May. There is then a third, shorter term for revision, examination and assessment.

If you opt to take a four-year placement course, you’ll usually undertake either a single one-year work placement or two six-month placements during your degree. There are some exceptions to this. For example, students on Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing courses may take clinical work experience (see our website for details).

Part-time courses

Some degrees are available on a part-time basis. You’ll find all the available modes of study listed on each course page. Part-time students normally take up to 80 credits per academic year, though this may vary according to your circumstances.

Joint honours degrees

Some subjects can be combined with a selected second subject to form a joint honours programme. You’ll find details of possible combinations on our website. The proportion of credits you’ll be expected to attain in each subject is set out in the programme specification.

Course structure

Students following a three-year, full-time route will study as outlined in the table below.

Courses with a placement year follow a similar pattern but students spend certain periods on work placement, dependent on the course you are studying.

Year. Term 1 Sept–Dec. Term 2 Jan–Easter. Term 3 Easter–May. 1 Academic period 1 Academic period 2 Academic period 3 2 Academic period 1 Academic period 2 Academic period 3 Optional placement 3 Academic period 1 Academic period 2 Academic period 3

Module choice

You select your study and modular blocks before the beginning of each year, and your tutor will advise you on the most appropriate options available, based on your interest. You can find module details for each course on the relevant pages within this prospectus. Up-to-date details can also be found within the programme specifications which are included on our online course pages.

Credits

All Brunel’s courses are made up of study, assessment and modular blocks, each worth between 0–45 credits. The final year usually includes a major project worth up to 40 credits. Overall, you’ll normally take at least 120 credits per year to complete a minimum of 360 credits for the award of an Honours Bachelor degree.

There are some exceptions:

• Placements attract 120 further credits, so you will complete at least 480 credits in total. This structure leads to a separate degree award title such as ‘with Placement’. If this is relevant to the course you would like to study, you’ll find details on the online course pages.

• Students taking an MEng, MMath or MSci qualification will study for a further fourth year, or Level 5. This year will include advanced modules and group projects and you must complete at least 120 further credits.

• If you do not complete your degree programme, you may still be eligible to achieve a recognised qualification, depending on the number of credits you do complete. Since each module has a credit value, Brunel is able to participate in national and international credit accumulation and transfer schemes.

Teaching

Our teaching and learning methods are designed to develop the transferable skills that will increase your employability

Most study and modular blocks include formal lectures, seminars and tutorials. Courses in the applied sciences, health and engineering disciplines include substantial practical or laboratory-based activity, including individual or group project work.

Teaching methods are summarised on each course page. You’ll also be expected to learn on your own in private study or in groups. You may participate in external activities such as research projects with external agencies and companies or visits to and by professionals in your discipline.

Assessment

Each programme specification describes the learning outcomes for your course – what you are expected to know and what you should be able to do when you have completed it. Assessment methods are summarised on each course page. We want to test both your knowledge and skills. Therefore many courses are assessed by a combination of continuous assessment, for example by essays, reports, practical reports and presentations; and end-of-year examinations. To progress from one year of a course to the next, you’ll need to fulfil the requirements for each year.

If you are taking a placement course, the Board of Examiners will also consider your performance on work placements. Professional practice in Education and Clinical Sciences degrees is also assessed. Your final undergraduate degree award classification is usually determined by your results at years 2 and 3. For MEng, MMath and MSci courses, your performance at years 2, 3 and 5 will count towards your degree classification.

Applying to Brunel

Applications for all full-time and placement first degree courses must be made online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

Where can I apply?

You’ll find all available courses listed on the UCAS website. You can apply for 2024 entry online as an individual or as part of your school or college. For more information and to apply for a course, visit ucas.com

When should I apply?

UCAS will start receiving applications from the starts of September 2024 for entry in autumn 2023. The normal closing date for submitting an application is by the January deadline. Some applicants, especially from outside the UK, may find this deadline difficult. So you can still apply through UCAS up to the end of June, if there are still places available. Universities and colleges may still consider your application but the most popular courses may already be full. If you apply after the end of June, you’ll automatically go into Clearing. This means your application will be considered if there are still vacancies on the course. In Clearing you contact the universities directly and then you add the choice on your UCAS account once you have received a provisional offer.

How do I apply?

You may apply for up to five choices of institution or course on your UCAS form. You do not need to use all five choices if you don’t want to. You can select your choices from any of the courses listed on the UCAS website and you may, for example, mix both degree and non-degree courses if appropriate. If you wish to

apply for more than one course at Brunel, you’ll have to make a separate entry for each choice. It is not possible to place your choices in order of preference and all your applications will be treated equally. You’ll need to include the institution codes for your choices. As well as choosing five institutions / courses, you need to complete seven other sections on the application: your personal details; additional information (for UK applicants only); student finance; your education history; your employment history; a personal statement; and a reference from the last educational institution you attended. If you need help or advice on your application, you can call the UCAS Customer Service team on +44 (0)371 468 0 468.

For other contact details, including phone numbers for applicants with hearing difficulties, visit ucas.com/contact-us

What does it cost to apply?

It currently costs £27 to apply through UCAS or £22.50 if you apply for only one course. UCAS costs can vary each year. If you’re applying through school or college, your teacher or lecturer will tell you how you need to pay. If you’re applying online as an individual, you can pay by credit or debit card.

How do I apply for a part-time or non-degree course?

Applications are made online via a link on each course webpage brunel.ac.uk/study

What offer will I be made?

Many applicants will have to gain qualifications before they can take up their place and the university will set the grades needed for a course. This is called a Conditional Offer. You may receive an Unconditional Offer if you have already achieved the qualifications for a particular course. Any conditions set for an offer of a place should be fulfilled by early August , unless they relate to UK qualifications completed in summer 2024 which we will receive through UCAS automatically. If you have any queries regarding this date, please contact the Admissions Office on 01895 265 265 admissions@brunel.ac.uk

Whatever course you choose to study, you should also be prepared to pay some additional study-related costs for materials and equipment. You can check the relevant course web page for details.

The amount you receive will depend on where you live during term-time and where you decide to study.

You may also be eligible for additional money, for example if you’re on a low income, are disabled or have children.

If you are an international student and require a Student visa to enter the UK to study, you must show you can afford your living costs each month. There is more information to help you with this at brunel.ac.uk/international/fees-and-funding

Working while you study.

Taking up a part-time job is a great way to earn some extra money, as well as giving you valuable work experience and learning new skills.

Our Job Shop can help you find part-time opportunities on and off campus. You can find more details at brunel.ac.uk/jobshop

Scholarships

Our scholarships and bursaries are based on a whole range of criteria, and many don’t require an application. In the summer we’ll assess your grades and other eligibility criteria and automatically award a scholarship or bursary if found eligible.

Available scholarships include awards for academic excellence, sports and for various groups of students including different subjects and countries – as well as bursaries for those from low income households. Undergraduate applicants are reminded to consent to the sharing of household data submitted to the Student Loans Company (SLC). Without your consent Brunel cannot access your data (namely your household income) and assess your eligibility for a bursary and you won’t be awarded.

You’ll find information about all available scholarships and bursaries, application details and all terms and conditions at brunel.ac.uk/scholarships

For enquiries about specific scholarships please email scholarships@brunel.ac.uk
